I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to
A. discuss graftage and its advantages and disadvantages of this method of asexual propagation
B. enumerate the common types of graftage
C. develop skills in graftage
D. sustain interest throughout the lesson

III. PROCEDURE:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. PRELIMINARIES
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance

B. MOTIVATION

So now, let’s have an activity called PictoWord

game. This game is a combination of pictures and Students participated
words. You’re going to link the pictures and word
clues to find the right words. If you can answer all
the pictowords then you will be able to unlock the
hidden letters from your answers to form a new
word. . I will divide you into five groups. Each group
should have a short yell. If you figured out the
answer just stand up and do your yell then answer.
A group who has the highest points will be added to
your points later on.
1. 1. Guava

2. Rambutan
2.
3. Atis
3.
4. Fruits
4.
5. Tomato
5.
6. Aratiles

7. Guyabano

C. LESSON PROPER
Your answers from the activity have something to
do with our topic this morning which is asexual
propagation using the different types of graftage.

Anyone who has an idea of what is graftage?

Graftage is connecting parts of plants
together.
 Graftage involves the joining of different
segments of two different plants of the same
species.

Why do we need to reproduce plants through this Varied answers

method?
 To produce superior strains and disease-
resistant plants that will be suited under a given
climate and soil conditions.

So now, let’s proceed to the advantages and

disadvantages of using this method of propagating
plants.

D. DISCUSSION
Advantages of Graftage
a. Desirable characteristics of the parent plants are
retained.
b. Crops that do not produce viable seeds can be
raised.

Cite examples of fruit crops that usually planted in

our place that produces seeds but you cannot use Varied answers
the seed to grow another plant and also fruits that
do not contain seeds?

 Seedless pongkan, orange, pomelo

c. Shortens the bearing period and produces

smaller plants (grafting and budding).
What is the importance of having short trees?
Varied answers
 Ease in applying agricultural practices

d. There is a uniform appearance of the trees and

more number of trees can be planted per unit
area.
What is the importance of having a uniform
appearance of trees? Varied answers

Disadvantages of Graftage
a. Required special skills
How do you acquire the skills in doing the grafting
method of propagation? By surfing the internet and reading
agricultural books
b. The life span of vegetatively propagated plants is
short
c. There is a possibility of disease being
transmitted from the parent plant to the new
individual plant.

Do you have questions regarding the advantages

and disadvantages of graftage? The students will going to ask questions if
there is any. If none, the teacher proceeds.

2 TYPES GRAFTAGE
1. grafting and
2. budding

1. GRAFTING- joining of plant parts together so

they will unite and continue their growth as one
plant
- involves a scion (upper portion) and
rootstock( lower portion)

Different methods of grafting that are usually use in

grafting fruit trees are:

A. Splice
B. Cleft grafting

Do you have any idea on how to do these methods of Students responded

grafting?

In order to perform this efficiently, you must have

the proper materials and tools.

Can you name these tools and materials that we’re Pruning shears, grafting/budding knife,
going to use on these methods? plastic strips, ice candy wrapper, alcohol
and cotton
Why do we need to use alcohol in this method?
To kill bacteria or germs that are present in
our hands and so as tools that we are going
to be use.

 We need alcohol to sterilized our hands and the

tools that will be used in order to remove or kill
pathogens that may infect the plant parts that
will be joining together.

The teacher explains the different methods of grafting

while demonstrating the said methods.

A. SPLICE GRAFTING
a. Prepare a rootstock and a scion. Remove the
leaves.
b. Make a slanting cut on both the rootstock and the
scion. (1 cm on smaller stems, 1” on pencil size
stem)
c. Bound together and tied firmly with plastic strips
d. Cover it with ice candy wrapper.

Any questions regarding this method? Students asked questions

B. CLEFT GRAFTING
a. Cut back the rootstock to the point of grafting.
Remove the leaves.
b. Make a vertical incision on the center of the
rootstock.
c. Make a slanting cut on both sides of the scion.
(1 cm on smaller stems, 1” on pencil size stem)
d. Insert the scion into the rootstock.
e. Secure it with plastic strips.
f. Cover it with ice candy wrapper.
Any questions on this method? Students asked questions

We now proceed to the second type of grafting.

2. BUDDING
the scion portion is a single bud rather than a
piece of stem or twig
A. Chip budding
a. On the rootstock, make a cut at an angle of 45
degrees downwards and make another cut
above the first, going downwards to meet the
first cut.
b. On the budstick, cut as for the rootstock then
remove the attached bud.
c. Insert the bud in the rootstock.
d. Cover it with thin plastic strips.
e. After two weeks, remove plastic strip to
expose bud.
f. Cut back the rootstock above union.
Any questions regarding the process that we did?
The students will going to ask questions if
B. Shied or T-budding there is any. If none, the teacher proceeds.
a. Make a T-cut or inverted T-cut on the bark of
rootstock
b. Remove a shield bud from scion
c. Insert bud into the rootsctock
d. Cover with a thin strip of of plastic or any
material that could also prevent drying up
e. After two weeks, remove plastic strip to
expose bud.
f. Cut back rootstock above union.
Did you follow the process in doing this method?

C. APPLICATION

I have cards here and each card contains the task that
you’re about to perform regarding the types of graftage.
You will be divided into 5 groups and then choose any
representative from your to pick a card. Students participated
E. GENERALIZATION

I Know that you’ve learn a lot from today’s

discussion. Let’s summarize our topic.
 What is graftage? Graftage involves the joining of
different segments of two different
plants of the same species.
 When do we need to apply this method?
When no seeds are available to
propagate a certain plant.
 What are the advantages and disadvantages
of using this method? Students elaborated
 What are the different types of graftage
Grafting and Budding
 What do you call the 2 plant parts that will
be used in grafting and budding? Rootstock and Scion

IV. EVALUATION
The teacher gives 2 activities to measure what the
students learned on the entire lesson.
Activity 1 (Group Activity)
You will be divided into 5 groups. Each group has a hang
man on the board. In this activity, I will ask questions
and if your group know the answer, just write it on the
bond paper that I gave you then raise it. Every wrong
answer, your hangman loses part of his body. Your score
depends on the number of the body parts left on your
hangman.
Activity 2 (Individual Activity)

On a ½ sheet of paper, Answer the following questions.

1. What do you call a type of asexual reproduction

in which a new organism develops from an 1. Budding
outgrowth or bud? 2. Top work grafting
2. What is the term used in grafting existing fruit 3. Shield or T-Budding
trees or mature trees to change its cultivar or to 4. Rootstock
add new varieties? 5. Scion
3. What is the method of budding wherein a “T” 6. Budding/Grafting Knife, , , ,
shaped cut is made on the selected portion of the 7. Plastic stips
stock? 8. ice candy wrapper
4. What do you call an established plant onto which 9. pruning shears
the bud or shoot is inserted or united by a 10. alcohol, cotton/scion,rootstock
process called grafting? -5. What are the 3 tools
and materials necessary to perform the graftage
efficiently.
5. What do you call the upper portion of the plant?

6-10. What are the 5 tools and materials used to

perform the methods of propagation efficiently.

11-15. Choose 1 method of grafting or budding and

elaborate the process in doing it.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Give atleast 10 kinds of fruits that are grown
here in our locality and give the respective
methods that will be used to propagate each
fruit trees.
