Junior Form Algebra Revision I

A. Linear Equations in One Unknown

Solve the following equations.

! " $ !%$ "$ $
1. 8𝑥 + 2(𝑥 + 1) − 4(3𝑥 − 2) + 1 = 10 -𝑥 + ". 2. / −6-
# " "
+ #
.1 = & − 5

3. The value of a number can be expressed as 3𝑥, where 𝑥 is a prime number. If the sum of all the
factors of the number is 32, find that number.

B. Manipulation of Simple Polynomials

1. If the value of the polynomial 𝑥 "'!( + 𝑘𝑥 + 2 is −4 when 𝑥 = −1, where 𝑘 is a constant, find the
value of the polynomial when 𝑥 = 1.

2. It is given that the coefficient of 𝑥 " in (2𝑝𝑥 " − 5)(7 + 6𝑥 + 4𝑥 " ) is 8, where 𝑝 is an integer.
(a) Find the value of 𝑝.
(b) Hence, expand (2𝑝𝑥 " − 5)(7 + 6𝑥 + 4𝑥 " ) and arrange the terms in descending powers of 𝑥.

3. It is given that 𝑥 ) 𝑦 ) = 200 and 𝑥 ") 𝑦 ) = 1000, where 𝑥 ≠ 0, 𝑦 ≠ 0 and 𝑛 is a positive integer.
Find the values of
(a) 𝑥),
(b) 𝑦),

(c) $ #"
.

C. Identities and Factorization

1.
(a) Factorize 𝑥 " − 4𝑥𝑦 + 4𝑦 " .
(b) Hence, factorize 𝑥 " + 4𝑦 " − 4𝑥𝑦 − 6𝑥 + 12𝑦 + 9.

2. Factorize (𝑎" + 𝑏 " )" − 4𝑎" 𝑏 " .

3.
(a) Expand (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏).
(b) Using the result of (a), expand (𝑝" + 3𝑝 − 1)(𝑝" − 3𝑝 + 1).
(c) Hence, find the value of 459 × 341.
