1 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

This standard establishes the method for the determination of the dimensional stability of covering materials.

2 GENERAL

Not applicable.

3 DEFINITIONS

3.1 Dimensional stability

Dimensional stability is defined as the degree of resistance to increased temperatures expressed as a
change of the linear dimensions of the material.

4 PREPARATION OF TEST SAMPLES

Cut a square test sample of 300 mm side from the material in such a way that two sides are parallel to the
longitudinal direction of the material and each of these sides is at least 200 mm from any edge of the
material to be tested.

5 APPARATUS

− An oven with forced air circulation, without intake of outside air and settable to a temperature of
80 ± 1 °C.
− Length measuring instrument accurate to within 0.1 mm.
− Thickness measuring instrument accurate to within 0.01 m.

6 TEST METHOD

1) Draw a square of 250 mm side on the test sample such that the sides of this square are parallel to the
sides of the test piece and the points of intersection of their respective diagonals coincide.
2) Measure the length of the sides of the squares accurately to within 0.1 mm.
3) Measure the thickness of the material accurately to within 0.01 mm at the four corners of the drawn
square and the point of intersection of the diagonals. The thickness, length and width of the test
sample are the averages of the respective measured values (T1, L1 and W1).
4) Lay the test sample on a perforated plate in the oven, which has meanwhile been raised to the desired
temperature (80 ± 1 °C).
5) Keep test samples from materials with a thickness < 1 mm in the oven for 10 minutes.
Foamed materials having a thickness up to 25 mm are kept in the oven for 30 minutes.
6) Remove the perforated plate with the test sample from the oven after the prescribed time has been
ended.
7) Slide the test sample from the perforated plate on to a glass plate,
8) After 2 hours' conditioning the thickness, length and width shall be determined following the same
method as previously used (T2, L2 and W2).

7 RESULTS

7.1 Calculation
Dimensional change:

Length = L2 – L1 x 100%
L1

Width = W2 – W1 x 100%
W1

Thickness = T2 – T1 x 100%
T1

7.2 Report
If a report is required it shall contain at least the dimensional change of each required direction accurately to
within 0.1%.
