Educational Background:
The University of Santo Tomas has since awarded Mr. Espinosa a Bachelor of Science in
General Studies degree. Additionally, he earned a Master of Laws from the University of
Michigan Law School and a Bachelor of Laws from Ateneo de Manila University.
Power Play
With electricity demand growing at a dizzying rate and supply often falling short of demand,
the Philippines faces what some are calling an energy crisis. But Manila Electric Company
(Meralco) President and CEO Ray Espinosa is instead looking at the challenge at hand as
an opportunity – a chance to steer the country toward a more sustainable future.
“Our focus is now on renewables,” Ray tells The CEO Magazine. “It has been our strategic
thrust to build and invest in renewable projects of at least 1,500 megawatts in the next five to
seven years, and we are well on our way to achieving that goal.”
Pandemic Adaptation
With so many projects in progress, the COVID-19 pandemic's arrival in 2020 offered an
unanticipated setback. No one was ready for the pandemic, Ray claims, and I believe it
became a problem for everyone. "The way we tackled this challenge was to move as quickly
as possible, putting the precautions and countermeasures in place for us to be able to
address the virus as medical research was trying to find out and address its many
components.
“So, our ability to respond to a crisis was tested, and I’d say that Meralco has been fortunate
to have been able to address the crisis in a way that actually contributed to the wellbeing of
the organization, as well as continue providing the most service to our customers.”
