ShipGuard v3-v4 Change-out Guide Technical/Install Guide

1. Executive Summary
The ShipGuard v3-v4 change-out kit is designed to upgrade the version 3 Ship Security Alert System to version
4 without replacing any existing cables. This greatly reduces the installation time required to install and
commission the new SSAS system.
The only components that require replacement are above deck, where the antenna and antenna concealment
unit is located.
Once the hardware has been installed the system will operate exactly as before and the same test procedure
can be adopted.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This kit is compatible with Wartsila v3 ShipGuard only.

System Overview System Description

2. System Overview
2.1. System Description
The system offered consists of components to convert the existing system to the new ShipGuard v4, using the
new IsatData Pro network.
This will provide the same SSAS functionality as before, with the added benefit of faster message
transmissions.
The kit will allow all existing control components (alert switches & control box) to remain installed in their current
locations.

2.2. Compatible Hardware

NOTE: This kit only provides an upgrade for Wartsila v3 ShipGuard

Wartsila v3 hardware can be identified by the satellite transceiver Inmarsat Serial Number(ISN)
Format:
DCC012xxxxxx (Model DMR800L)

NOTE: If you have an Inmarsat serial number with format DST001xxxxxx, then you are using the version 2
SSAS. This change out kit is not compatible with version 2

There is a v2 – v4 change out kit available to purchase, please contact your local Wartsila representative for
further information.

3. System Installation
Wartsila ShipGuard is a simple modular system that can either be installed by a Wartsila trained engineer or by
suitably qualified member of the ships’ crew. Full guidance on physical installation is included in this chapter.
Wartsila engineers or ships’ crew can also conduct system commissioning; full details of this are included in
system commissioning section of the ShipGuard v4 Technical/User Guide.

3.1. General
Before starting any installation work check contents against detailed order/packing list – any discrepancies must
be reported immediately.
For convenience installation instructions are broken down into module sections.
Your kit will consist:
■ 1 x Terminal unit comprising:
■ 1 x Skywave ST6100 series terminal
■ 1 x DMR>IDP stub cable
■ 1 x Polycarbonate mounting box
■ 1 x Entry/Exit gland;
■ 1 x Terminal unit mounting bracket (rail mount style)
■ 1 x Technical / Installation manual
■ 1 x v3>v4 Change-out guide.

3.2. Power Isolation

Before any work is carried out, ensure that you isolate the main 24Vdc power supply from the SSAS system.
Once the system has been powered down, you can begin removal of existing v3 components.

NOTE: Please switch system key to “OFF” mode before continuing

3.3. Removal of V3 Components

Please follow the below steps to remove the existing v3 components.
1. Remove the antenna concealment unit top cover to reveal the DMR transceiver.
2. Loosen the cable gland to allow the cable to move freely during removal of components.
3. Lift the DMR transceiver up then twist the cable connector to remove the 8 way cable.
4. Remove the corner screws from the metal base plate and remove it.
5. Unscrew the gland internal nut and then remove the gland and cable from the concealment unit.
Be sure to secure the nut, ready for the re-installation
6. Unbolt the antenna mounting bracket u-bolts and remove mounting bracket from the installation location.

3.4. Installation of V4 Components

1. Mount the antenna box to the mounting bracket and affix with the screw kit
2. Mount the antenna bracket to the fitting location with the u-bolts or appropriate mounting screws.

NOTE: If the cable gland on the existing v3 cable is in good condition then you should re-use the gland,
following the below procedure.

System Installation Installation of V4 Components

If the cable gland cannot be re-used then please see Appendix III – Installation with New Cable Gland,
on page 12-14.
3. Push the v3 cable and gland into the v4 antenna concealment unit and re-fit internal nut.
4. Connect the v3 cable to the v4 stub cable, taking care to minimise the amount of pressure on the joining
connectors.
5. Tighten the external gland connection and apply silicone sealant. Ensure cable does not move freely
anymore.
6. Cable tie any loose cabling and recheck all fixings are tight.
7. Keep antenna concealment unit top cover removed to allow LED to be observed during initial power up.

3.4.2. Initial Power-Up

Installation is now complete and when satisfied with all connections and fastenings the system can be powered
up.
After powering up the system for the first time (this is known as a cold start), and may take up to 5-10 minutes to
ensure GPS and Inmarsat satellite acquisition. Subsequent starts will be much quicker.
The single LED located on the ST6100 series terminal will begin flashing every 2 seconds.
Once a GPS position is acquired the system will transmit a “Start Up” message to FleetView Online, which can
be confirmed by your office.
Once the start-up message is confirmed then you can fit the top cover to the concealment unit.

4. System commissioning
4.1. General
The ST6100 series terminal in the ShipGuard kit is supplied as a pre-programmed unit and requires no user
intervention to be fully operational. Any variance from this must be specified at time of ordering.
A service engineer may be required to attend the vessel if alteration to programming is required.

4.2. Terminal registration

Before the terminal can be tested/commissioned it must be registered with Wartsila, this is the responsibility of
the ship operator. A registered terminal upon being powered up is capable of being tracked by the shore user
interface FleetViewOnline.

Regulatory and Type Approval Information Limitations on intended operating environment

7. Regulatory and Type Approval Information

7.1. Limitations on intended operating environment
The ST6100 series terminal can be used in a wide range of control and monitoring applications. When third
party equipment is attached, such third-party equipment and all cabling must be of suitable design and
installation.
Transas exercise due diligence to ensure that the equipment is suitable for use in stated applications, but
ultimate responsibility for the compliance of a complete system must rest with the prime contractor at a site
where local conditions may require additional EMC precautions be taken.

WARNING: Changes or modifications to this unit not expressly approved by the party responsible for
compliance could void the user's authority to operate this equipment and any written or implied warranties.

7.2. Compliance
The ST6100 Terminal series obtained the following certifications:
Inmarsat Type Approval
Industry Canada
FCC Part 25
R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC (CE Mark)

Appendices Appendix III – Installation with New Cable Gland

9.3. Appendix III – Installation with New Cable Gland

This section describes how to install the upgrade kit if the existing v3 cable gland cannot be re-used.
A larger (M25) cable gland is supplied to allow the v3 cable to pass through the gland without cutting the cable
itself.
1. The existing cable gland hole in the antenna concealment box should be increased to 25mm to allow the
new gland to be installed.

2. Remove the rubber seal from the gland and cut using a sharp knife to ensure a clean cut.

3. Insert the v3 cable through the cable gland nut then pass through the cable gland and connect to the v4
stub cable.
4. Insert the rubber seal into the gland and ensure it is fitted correctly, then tighten the cable gland nut to seal
the cable.
5. Silicone sealant should be used also to further secure the concealment unit from the outside environment.
