SECTION A: CASE STUDY DETAILS

The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) is committed to providing quality technological

education and training to its students and to contribute towards the advancement of society
through research and innovation as well as effective community engagement. The University
undertakes to produce wholesome graduates prepared for the world of work, good citizenship
and leadership.

TUK is strategically located at the heart of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and
attracts students from all over the country and beyond. The number of students applying for
places at the University far exceeds the available enrolment spaces and the already strained
facilities.

Student accommodation is critical in supporting student wellbeing and performance; which in

turn contributes to performance of the University and indeed the economy as a whole. Both
local/national and international students are in dire need for quality accommodation. It is within
this context that TUK is looking to provide accommodation for its students as part of supporting
their physical presence in the university as well as supporting effective learning and research.

The University does not have student accommodation facilities at its Nairobi Campus and is
now looking to purchase the plot adjacent to the main campus along Pate Bay (see Figure 1
below), which will be used to develop an ultra-modern purpose build student accommodation
facility:

ensuring that you highlight all the risks and opportunities that the site presents in relation to
this project. The University does not yet have access to the site, you are therefore not expcted
to enter the site but can view it from the outside boundaries.

Your report should also give an indication of the proposed building(s) layout and massing
designs.

QUESTION 2 (10 marks)

The University would also like you to prepare a site logistics layout for the proposed project,
including a construction method statement for one of the key site management activities. The
Site Logistics report should include:
• how materials will arrive and be unloaded on site; where to store materials; how to
move materials around the site, measures to minimise issues with neighbours, etc.
• Sketches illustrating significant stages of the construction operational method.
• Sketches illustrating access and storage of materials and utilisation of main plant
items during the construction operations.
• sketches of how logistics will be managed beyond the site

For both Q1 & Q2 above, ensure that you clearly state any assumptions you have made in
regards to the proposed project and where you are not able to find adequate information, you
can make assumptions and clearly state them.
