Happy Henderson Homecoming!

This year’s homecoming centered around the

theme of video games. The freshmen’s theme
fixated on Pokémon, which many people know
from trading Pokémon cards during elementary
school. The sophomores unearthed a confusing
theme, starting out as the classic Angry Birds,
then switching to Subway Surfers the day the
t-shirt designs were due. This left many soph-
omores reeling in bewilderment, but they ral-
lied to create an awesome hallway! The juniors
devoured the Pac-Man theme, and lived it up,
creating this author’s favorite hallway design.
Finally, last but certainly not least, the seniors
bounded forward with Mario, and they em-
braced this well beloved character.
The homecoming carnival started out with an
update on Hendy sports, then the cheerleaders,
and dance team came out and performed to ex-
cited cheers.
Then, a crowd favorite, the senior dance team
members and senior football players went out
onto the field to perform a conjoined routine,
which was incredibly successful, after a few

The past few months Broadway
has been buzzing with news. From
shows closing to celebrities making
their debut, there has been a whole
lot going on.
Since making its comeback in the
fall of 2021 after Covid, Broadway
has bounced back to popularity.
Broadway has been vital to the
culture of New York for years, and
an important source of income for
the many talented actors telling the
stories we have come to know and
love.
To start off the news, unfortunate-
ly Dear Evan Hansen’s almost six
year run came to an end September
18th. This heartwarming story of a
teen trying to make connections in
a world where he feels alone was an
extraordinary musical, winning a
total of six Tony Awards.
Beetlejuice has also joined the list
of shows closing, announcing they
will perform their last show on Jan-
uary 8th, 2022. Beetlejuice is filled
with comedy and great music as
you come to know Lydia Deetz, the
teenager this show follows as she
navigates the afterlife. This show has

This Fall, the Henderson Drama
Club will be performing Our Rot-
ten Town and The Interview on No-
vember 9th and 11th. To encourage
people to come, I interviewed sev-
eral members of the cast and crew
about their opinions on the show!
When I asked, “If you could de-
scribe the show in one word, what
would it be?” The words “roller-
coaster,” “energetic,” “lively,” “ghast-
ly,” “hilarious,” and “unique” were a

almost five years. Come From Away
left the stage October 2nd, and will
be missed dearly on Broadway.

As the leaves fall and the morn-
ings become colder, it’s the perfect
time to wrap yourself in a blanket
and read a book.
For the perfect fall vibe and dark
academia read, The Secret History
by Donna Tartt is the book to read.
Although Tartt is known for her
most recent novel turned film ad-
aptation, The Goldfinch, The Secret
History is what put her on the map
in 1992.
The Secret History tells the story
of a young man named Richard Pa-
pen, his group of friends, and what
led to the murder of their friend,
Edmund “Bunny” Corcoran.
The book is set in 1980s New
England, but Richard tells it many
years later as a reflection of what
happened to Bunny and his friends
now that he is older and wiser.
Many critics have called the book
a “reverse murder mystery” since
the reader knows the ending from
the beginning but does not discover
the “why” until later in the book.
The book contains phrases in Lat-

and is a different, yet sophisticated
and engaging read for many high
school students. It focuses on how
grief can affect someone’s every-
day life (academically, socially, and
mentally) while highlighting the

of the month feature is Lizzo’s latest
album, Special.
This album is all about body posi-
tivity and self acceptance. It preach-

sic Jane Austen novel, Persuasion, is
nothing short of magnificent. Star-
ring Dakota Johnson and Cosmo
Jarvis, this retelling is positively hi-

Anne, played by Dakota Johnson,
is a heart-broken, clever woman in
the early 19th century who has her
heart set on her ex-lover, although
she was persuaded to give him up
eight years prior to the setting of the

selves. Lizzo talks about wanting to

hurt you before. Lizzo sums up the

on or choose someone who knows
you better than anyone ever could.

SASA Feature

The South Asian Student Asso-
ciation is one of many clubs at Hen-
derson that focuses on embracing a
specific culture or race. The South
Asian Student Association focus-
es on the culture of the ethnicities
from southern parts of Asia.
The SASA helps give a voice to
South Asian students in a predom-
inantly white high school and helps
form a sense of belonging and unity.
The SASA holds an event called
“Chai and Chill” where students can
get together and talk about their ex-
periences while drinking tea. This
is a great outlet for students to talk
about their culture and share the ex-
periences that shaped them to this
day.
Aviana Poy, a senior in the SASA,
says “I feel like it’s hard for a lot of
people in school to embrace their
culture and feel good about it when
they’re surrounded by people that
are white. [SASA] is a good way for
all of us to band together. I think
there’s power in numbers, and we
feel so much more cultured when
we’re together and we can embrace
it with a bunch of other people that
also embrace it. It really helps a
lot of people that are maybe not as
comfortable with their culture yet.”

“It allows other people who might
not be a part of that group to learn
about all the different cultures of
South Asia, which I think is super
valuable.”

Boys Cross Country
The boy’s cross country team has had a great
season with varsity and junior varsity districts
just around the corner. They have placed second
at the Battle of West Chester, and runners have
achieved personal bests all season.
The team has been led by senior Simeon Shap-
pell Smith and sophomore Ben Pentz. The team
hopes to finish the season strong with more per-
sonal best times for the entire time.
Girls Cross Country
The girl’s cross country team has had a fan-
tastic season with team spirit at an all-time
high. The team has been led by junior Riley
Bender and freshman Brinlea Rieger, who have
achieved many personal bests along with the
rest of their team.
The girls hope to finish the season out strong
and are excited for the end of the season.
Girls Soccer
Girls’ soccer has had a fantastic season with
a record of 11-5-1. Coached by Mr. Norris, the
team is known not only for their fantastic BeRe-
als but also for their top scorers, Morgan Chiaz-
za, Becca Miller, and Olivia Bradley.
The girls made it to the playoffs but lost 1-0
this past Tuesday against Upper Dublin, still
finishing the season out strong led by captains
Becca Miller, Carly Gordon, Kennedy Stark, and
Olivia Bradley. Congratulations on a great sea-
son girls!

Cocoa staggered out, the door
falling away from behind her. The light
was so strong, it became blinding.
Cocoa held her hand up to shield her
eyes, overcome. Her eyes adjusted to
the glaring yellow light, then widened.
“What is this?” Winnie asked, cow-
ering from the blinding heat and
light.
Cocoa sank to her knees and
felt a soft cool carpet underneath
her. Her hands touched the ground
and felt the… strands? Fronds? She
opened her eyes a slit and saw green
under her. It wasn’t like any kind of
carpet she’d ever seen before.
Hesitatingly, still shielding her face
from the glare, she looked up and
around her. Her surroundings were as
confusing as the carpet. There were
pillars scattered at random intervals
about her, brown, rough columns that
looked coarse to the touch. Confus-
ingly, they expanded towards the top,
branching out. These columns were
topped with green too, like the car-
pet, only broader and flatter.
Cocoa’s gaze followed up the pillar
and saw that it wasn’t holding any-
thing up. What use of a pillar was
that? Weren’t pillars used for struc-
tural support?
She looked beyond the meaning-
less pillars to the ceiling— only there
wasn’t one. There was just a great
expanse of blue, stretching from hori-
zon to horizon. And in this blue dome
was the source of the light. It was so
bright that Cocoa could’t look at it
directly. She figured a huge source of
electricity must be powering it for it
Hendy Fall Sports Breakdown

Boys Soccer
The Henderson boy’s soccer wrapped up their
regular season with a 6-0 win over Coatesville.
Their win crowned the boy’s team as the Ches-
Mont champions for the second consecutive
year.
Led by captains Max Teneza and Ryan
Kuegler, the boys finished with a 13-5 record.
This was largely due to a great defense anchored
by Keeper Diego Teran and an absurd 16 goals
by Joe Deangelis.
Carrying the momentum from the regular
season, Henderson took care of Methacton on
Tuesday night, winning 2-0. Kuegler and Potter
scored goals off a Griffin assist, and Kuegler as-
sisted in Potter’s goal. Make sure to come out to
the next playoff game to show support! (Theme
yet to be announced)
Football
The football team wraps up its season this
Friday away at West Chester East. Coming off
their first win and Coach Brice’s first win as a
head coach here at Henderson, the boys will try
to finish out strong against a cross-town rival.
Although this season may not be what they
expected, there were some bright spots on the
squad.
Logan Goodwin and Evan Kearney seemed
to be making every play on defense this season,
and Brady Collins stood out as a sophomore on
the other side of the ball. Congratulations are
also for our graduating captains. Seniors Cole
Foster, Tavis Willis, and Mike Boden are wrap-

“Where are we?” Winnie whis-
pered.
“I- I don’t know,” Cocoa said. She
turned over her shoulder and saw
the door that they had just fallen
out of behind her. It was in the wall,
like all other doors she’d seen. But it
hadn’t led into a room. It had led…
“Outside?”
Cocoa had lived her whole life in-
side. She hadn’t known it until the
moment she fell out that door. It was
so natural for her to be enclosed on
all sides by walls that it didn’t strike
her as odd in any way until the walls
fell away.
Now, she felt something she’d never
felt before. Miniscule. The great open
sky stretched forever over her head,
and the rolling grass rolled right on
over the horizon and forever into the
distance it seemed.
She felt tiny, small, insignificant,
infinitesimal to the vastness reach-
ing without end. It was so open, so
airy, so empty, and yet so full. Full
of sounds, like the wind stirring the
leaves on the trees, of the creak of
boughs, of the silent sound of sun-
shine, of the air humming with life as
it only does in the summer. Full of
possibility.
Cocoa felt an inexplicable joy
flow through her entire being, from
nose to toes and heart to soul. She
looked up at the sun, closing her eyes
against its brightness, and soaked
in the warmth. She laughed. A joy-
ful, radiant, effervescent laugh that
bubbled up from deep inside her. Her
eyes began to water from the light,
and she had to look away.
She looked back at Winnie, who
was staring at Cocoa as if she was
ping up some great careers at Henderson High
School. Looking forward to seeing the boys beat
East in front of their crowd. Show out and be
loud!
Golf
The Henderson Golf Team wrapped up a great
season recently finishing 9-2. The team had a
good blend of seniors, juniors, and even some
lower-classmen who contributed throughout
the season.
There was Sean “Captain” Surowiec, a gradu-
ating senior with a smooth lefty swing. Andrew
Delucia, another senior, had a knack for sink-
ing clutch putts all season. Next year, the team
should be just as good if not better with a prom-
ising trio of juniors that played very well.
Josh Baker consistently shot in the 30s this
year, with Patrick Lynn and Cole Snyder each
catching fire for long stretches throughout the
season.
Another bright spot in Henderson’s future
is Sam Houchen. He has the potential to score
very low and did so during Ches-Monts by
shooting just +1 through 18 holes. Congrats on
a great season guys!
Field Hockey
The Henderson Field Hockey team had an
amazing season. Led by captains Molly DiCam-
pli, Kristina Cobb, and Rylee Bauer, the girls fin-
ished with 11 wins, seven losses, and a tie during
the regular season.
In round one of the playoffs, Henderson
crazy. “Isn’t it wonderful?” Cocoa
gasped. Winnie kept her eyes on Co-
coa and slowly moved her head back
and forth.
“We’re not supposed to be here,”
she said, a low urgency coloring her
tone.
Cocoa frowned, then realized
she’d been smiling so widely with joy
that her cheek muscles hurt.
“We’re not supposed to be here?”
she echoed. “Why not?”
Winnie gestured to the door, then
glanced at Cocoa. “We are not meant
to be here,” she said slowly and de-
liberately, as if that would help the
message sink in.
Cocoa cocked her head quizzically,
her eyebrows furrowing. Winnie was
acting as if something bad had hap-
pened to them, and now they needed
to repair it. Or something bad was
going to happen.
Cocoa shivered. “What’s going
on?” she asked, agitation evident in
her rising tone.
Winnie leapt forward and clamped
her hand over Cocoa’s mouth. “Shhh,”
she hissed. “Come on,” she whis-
per-shouted, and began to drag Co-
coa back to the door.
“No!” Cocoa cried, and wrenched
free. She faced Winnie. “I want to
stay here. Just for a bit longer.”
Winnie pursed her lips, looking like
she was ready to drag Cocoa back
inside. Then she went absolutely mo-
tionless, her face deathly pale. And
then Cocoa heard what Winnie had
heard.
The click of shoes. A door open-
ing in the distance. And the scariest
thing, that made Cocoa turn into a
statue of terror.
Approaching voices.
defeated Abington Highschool 5-0 with a pair
of goals from Kendall Brandon. And Cobb,
DiCampli, and Lucy Donnelly each contribut-
ed their own. The defense shut out the Ghosts
behind a great defensive game plan and great
goalie play by Peyton Grim.
Sadly, the girls ended their season this past
Wednesday. In a tough fought game, they lost to
Downingtown West 9-1, but kept their head up
high. Congratulations on a great season ladies!
Volleyball
Volleyball has had an amazing season led by
captains Olivia McClain and Lilly Person. They
ended the regular season with a record of 14-8
and are headed to the playoffs.
The team’s two other seniors, Emilee Mur-
taugh and Breanna Craig, along with senior
managers Maggie Linahan and Abby Herbert,
have had a strong impact on the team, which
has led to a great team mentality.
Sadly, the girl’s team lost their playoff game
this past Tuesday against Downingtown East by
5 points in the fifth set. Still, they came out of
the game with their heads held high and great
sportsmanship. Great season ladies!
