“Philippines in the 21st Century: The Legacy Rizal Left Behind”

The Philippines, in the lens of the 21st century, is a culturally-diverse country

consisting of 7,107 islands. Thus, the rich and vast cultural heritage renowned
worldwide is deeply rooted in multi-country influences as a result of the Spanish,
American, and Japanese colonization, respectively. The gradual shift from the ancient
civilization to the digital era has been surprisingly downgraded throughout the years.
Although significant changes are seen in terms of technological advances, it is
inextricably linked with the culture that causes social stigma with conflicting views on
different issues. Past historical events still shape norms, values, and morals common in
society. The happenings of today are mere reflections of the past.

Dr. Jose Rizal's Writings depict the kind of legacy he left the country. His death is
a living reminder to do everything for the love of the country and people. Moreover,
these novels will forever remain a symbol of freedom and liberalization. Rizal's works
enlightened people about the oppression experienced under the Spanish regime.
Furthermore, push for revolutionary movements through expressing thoughts in
publications without using violence.

Rizal's "The Philippines: A Century Hence," centered on the lives of Filipinos

before and after the 333-year Spanish colonial rule. He reiterated that Spain's
imposition of military policies, deterioration of Filipino identity, and submissiveness of
Filipinos to Spaniards were the reasons for the miseries experienced during that time.
Moreover, it mirrors the staggering Philippine economy today. The preferences of
Filipinos in terms of products, goods, and services internationally, explain why the
country remains low-ranked in the global market. Quality, variation, material, and
sluggish technological advances, are factors that contribute to the issue. Filipinos
should learn the importance of instilling nationalism and patriotism in the country and
the people by favoring local products and shops.

Meanwhile, "To the Young Women of Malolos” were dedicated to the twenty
passionate women of Malolos that introduced Christianity to Filipinos, and education as
a sign of gender equality, since the Spanish favored men to work and go to school only.
In contrast, women should stay at home and do chores. These are emulated in today's
young women who speak up for themselves, especially if they are oppressed and
silenced in all forms. Women empowerment and feminism, in the appearance of all-
female organizations, and sororities, like "Gabriela," among others, move for equality
between men, women, and the LGBTQIA+ community, and have an awareness of their
acquired human rights for their protection and sanctity.
Lastly, his novel entitled "The Indolence of Filipinos" identified the traits of the
Filipinos during the Spanish regime. According to his memoirs, the Filipinos did not work
hard due to lack of motivation, forced labor, tax, abuse of Spaniards, government
neglect, and indifference in terms of social classes. Nowadays, it reflects the image of
the modern generation youth in society. The digital era, which caused netizens to
engage in social media platforms, awaits a beneficial consequence when misused for
selfish interests and personal agendas. Also, laziness in people, and being too reliable
towards labor work. "Juan Tamad" represents a lazy Filipino who waits until guava from
a tree falls into his mouth. Too much dependence on technology can kill the
interconnectedness of people and the strong ties built over the years.
