HOMEWORK 3 - Planning of automation and control projects

INTRODUCTION
On this occasion we will see the diagnosis of needs of our project, the description and
characteristics of the manufacturing processes of the project and its systems, we will take
into account the issues of the power supply and consumption indicators, which is a
fundamental part to know because our churros machine must be working for a long time
and automatically, so there must be a product production control, in addition to that we
will see in more detail where the automation is in our machine.

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE
The student will plan Automated and Control Systems, considering technical, economic
and regulatory aspects, using information technologies and decision making to guarantee
operational availability.

DIAGNOSTIC OF NEEDS
-Manual process of making churros take time

-The operator gets tired for the physical effort

-The process could be more efficient

-It is needed an automated process if the efficiency of the process is wanted.

DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROCESS AND

SYSTEMS
Process of a churro machine:

Based on the current churro machines, the process is the following:

Process for the production of churros, characterized by comprising a hopper where the
dough obtained later is extruded through a set formed by two supports equipped with a
multitude of tracks with the external shape of the churro, leaving a small separation
between both for displacement of a cutting blade. (The current process of the churreria
differs in the cut of the churro since it is currently a manual cut)

The raw, extruded and cut churro is automatically deposited in individual rectangular cells,
placed in a line, without separations between them, occupying the width dimensions of
the conveyor belt where they are located, having as many lines of cells as the length
dimensions of the fryer allow.

The churros already placed in each of the cells are placed below the oil level of the fryer,
depositing once fried, by the action of the conveyor belt, on a packing table, for distribution
for consumption or freezing. (Our process is for local and controlled consumption, so
freezing is not necessary, nor is packaging)

Systems

Box/Structure

Rectangular-shaped structure, and made of stainless steel. (this structure is planned to

be made with 1" square PTR) this structure will store all the components and will have
two tabs perpendicular to the floor plane to hold the dough cup for extrusion

The right hand side will hold the speed controller.

Die holders

The system foresees a previously mentioned support to contain the die that stores the
mass

Speed controller

A controller Baldor BC140 / BC140-FBR DC CONTROL full-wave variable speed DC

motor controls, The BC140 and BC140-FBR are able to handle both 115 and 208/230
Volt AC line inputs. In addition, one model can be used on a wide range of motors by
selecting and inserting the appropriate Plug-in Horsepower Resistor.

The standard model, BC140, controls all motors through 3/4 HP at 115 Volt AC line input
and 1-1/2 HP at 230 Volt AC line input.

The module is housed in a rugged metal enclosure not plastic. Keyhole slots facilitate
mounting and an easily accessible terminal block simplifies connections.
Reverse switch

Terminals 125VAC 20A with Waterproof Cover" A three position switch with 6 terminals
will be used to stop the machine, forward or reverse as required in the process

POWER SUPPLIES AND CONSUMPTION

Our motor consumes 30 amperes and has a voltage of 250 volts, the calculation shows
that: 30x250xraiz3= approximately 1.73 or 12,925 watts. For a three-phase electric motor
that consumes 12,975 watts we can say that it consumes 12,975 kilowatts. In one hour
this equals 12,975 kilowatt hours.

The three-phase motor is an electric machine that transforms electrical energy into
mechanical energy by means of electromagnetic interactions. Some of the electric motors
are reversible, they can transform mechanical energy into electrical energy by functioning
as generators.

They operate through a three-phase power source. They are driven by three alternating
currents of the same frequency, which reach their maximum values alternately. They have
a power of up to 300KW and speeds between 900 and 3600 RPM.

For transmission, 3-wire lines are used, but for final use, 4-wire lines are used, which are
the 3 phases and the neutral.
PRODUCTION INDICATORS
-How long did it take to build the machine?

-Were the costs as foreseen at the beginning?

-Was the owner of the machine able to save money?

-Was there a higher production of churros?

-Did the production of churros become faster?

-Did the machine work correctly and present the least number of failures possible?

-Expected profits according to the customer's expectations?

Total project base cost $33,084.81

CONCLUSIONS
During the continuation of this project I learned several things, for example I had to
investigate how to calculate how much energy a three-phase motor consumes, besides
this document will help us in the final document, so everything has to be written in the
clearest possible way. It was a bit extensive like all the assignments but it is good to do
it so that we are not pressured when it is time to do the final document.
