Facilities Report

Board of Library Trustees Meeting July 27, 2011 Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial Library The window contractor replaced the 1st floor lobby window and the 3rd floor window in the Washingtoniana Room. The new digital controls system for air handler number 1 is completed and engineering staff is able to monitor and control the unit by computer. All preventive maintenance was completed for the month of June 2011 and all A/C equipment is working during this very hot summer season. Facilities has replaced the light tubes in the second floor reading rooms until DCPL is able to do the lighting retrofit project for the 2nd floor. The parking garage has been completely re-lamped to provide better lighting for the entire area. Carpet cleaning is now being done by facilities staff with new equipment purchased for the carpet cleaning program. DCPL has received a new portable lift that can be used for all special needs programming in the Great Hall and A5. The facilities staff at MLKML has worked on numerous special programs over the last two months including the 75th birthday for Famous Amos and the Afro Brazilian Arts and Cultural Heritage Festival. Neighborhood Libraries New replacement windows have been ordered for Benning and Anacostia libraries because of windows being broken by unknown people. All new energy management systems have been installed and are completely operational at Takoma Park, Cleveland Park, Chevy Chase, Palisades, Lamond-Riggs, Capitol View, and Northeast. Laptop computers are being programmed so that the systems can be monitored remotely. All preventive maintenance on equipment was completed for the month of May and June at all neighborhood libraries. The Fire Alarm contractor has completed fire extinguisher inspections at all neighborhood libraries. Automatic sprinkler system at Chevy Chase has been repaired and is now tied into the automatic notification system with SimplexGrinnell. New doors have been installed at Southwest and Capitol View as part of the door replacement project using energy stimulus funding. Four remaining neighborhood libraries should be completed by September 30. Miscellaneous Items Facilities is in the process of doing special cleaning throughout the neighborhood libraries. It began with cleaning and striping the parking lot at Capitol View and Southwest; next will be West End and Palisades. Boiler rooms at seven neighborhood libraries will receive special cleaning and painting. Document #9C Board of Library Trustees Meeting July 27, 2011
