RICE HUSK AND
THEIR USES

Rice husks are the hard protecting coverings of

grains of rice. In addition to protecting rice during
the growing season, rice husks can be put to use as
building material, fertilizer, insulation material, or
fuel.
Agricultural waste, such as rice husk as (RHA),
can be used instead of cement in concrete making,
producing eficiente concrete with improved
concrete properties like impermebility, worability,
strength and corrosion of steel reinforcement.
Uses of Rice Husk Ash
The main uses of rice husk ash are as follows:
Rice hull ash is used to make high-performance
concrete.
Rice hull ash is used as an insulator.
Rice hull ash is also used in:
In a ceramic glaze
In roofing shingles
In waterproofing chemicals
In oil spill absorbents
In speciality paints
Flame retardants
In insecticides and biofertilizers etc.
Advantages of Rice Husk Ash
Rice husk ash provides good compressive strength to the
concrete.
It is a by-product; hence, it helps in cutting down the
environmental pollution.
The high silica content makes it a good supplementary
cementitious material or pozzolanic admixture.
The density of concrete containing rice husk ash is similar
to the normal weight concrete; hence, it can also be used
for the general-purpose application too.
The impervious microstructure of rice husk ash concrete
provides better resistance to the sulphate attack, chloride
ingress, carbonation etc.
Rice hull concrete has good shrinkage property and
increases the durability of concrete.
Disadvantages of Rice Husk Ash
By the use of rise husk ash, concrete progressively
becomes unworkable. Hence water-reducing
admixtures should be used to obtain workable concrete
for the ease of placement and compaction of concrete.
BAGASSE AND
THEIR USES

Bagasse is the essential

ingrediente for the production of
pressed building board, acoustical
tile, and other construction
materials and can be made into a
number of biodegradable plastics.
Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is obtained through
burning agricultural waste bagasse, which can be used
as a cement replacement to produce structural
concrete. A comprehensive and up-to-date overview on
the properties of concrete containing SCBA as partial
replacement of cement is presented in this paper.

The sthrength of hardened concrete also increased when

added with sugarcane bagasse. Therefore, as the
conclusion, sugarcane bagasse can be used as a natural
concrete retarder based on the results obtained. Content
may be subject to copyright. Concrete is the most
common material used in building construction
nowadays.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of bagasse?
Bagasse is a sustainable product because it is sourced with
very little impact on the environment. It can be easily
replenished because the residue can be obtained after every
harvest. The main drawback of Styrofoam is that it never
degrades. Plastic is durable but can take up to 400 years to
degrade.
COIR FIBERS AND
THEIR USES
Coir (from malayalam Kayar Cord) is a
coarse fiber extracted from the fibrous outer
shell of a coconut. The individual fiber cells
are narrow and hollow, with thick walls made
of celulose. They are pale when immature but
later becoome hardened and yellowed as a
layer of lignin is deposited on their walls.
Coir fibers have been extensively studied for application in
civil and construction materials. Primarily, the fibers are
used as reinforcement in cement or as replacement for
aggregates to improve tensile properties, reduce moisture
absorption, and improve other performance properties.

Some advantages of coir fibers include insect proof,
resistant to fungi and decay, provide good insulation
against temperature and sound. They remain unaffected
by external factors like humidity. They act as reinforcement
substance by giving strength to the composite.
