FRANCE

France, officially known as   French Republic, is the largest

country in   European Union by area (about 675,000 square kilometres) and the

second largest by population (about 65 million). It has borders with   English

Channel,   Atlantic Ocean,   Mediterranean Sea and eight other

European countries, among them   Spain,   

Germany and   Belgium.

France also administers a number of territories around the world, such as 

 French Guiana (in   South America),   Réunion (an

island in   Indian Ocean) and   Guadeloupe (one of   

Leeward Islands in   Caribbean Sea).

Internally, France has a wide variety of landscapes, including coastal plains in the north

and west and mountain ranges such as   Alps in the south-east and 

 Pyrenees in the south-west. France's highest mountain is 

 Mont Blanc (4,810m) and its longest river is   Loire (1,012km).

France was a monarchy for hundreds of years before becoming a republic during the

French Revolution. The great royal families of French history included   Capets

1987–1328),   Valois (1328–1589) and   Bourbons (1589–1792).

The capital of France is   Paris. This great city is home to some of the world's

most popular tourist attractions, such as   Eiffel Tower. There are many

important museums and art galleries, including   Louvre, where you can see 

 Mona Lisa by   Leonardo da Vinci. The city is also famous for its

wonderful food, café culture and nightlife. One of the best-known night spots, established in

1889 and still open today, is   Moulin Rouge cabaret.

Popular newspapers in France include Le Monde and Le Figaro. There are also several

English-language newspapers such as   Connexion.
