Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Cursillo is a lay Catholic movement providing a simple method for women and men to live and share a conscious and growing life of faith, hope and love in union with the Church. Through the power of the Holy Spirit the Cursillo Movement strives to bring about the Incarnation of Christ into all sectors of society. The weekend (Thursday evening thru Sunday late afternoon) is a blend of seriousness, light-heartedness, spiritual exercises, talks and discussions. The teachings of Christ are discussed within the atmosphere of joy and song. There are meditations and talks by clergy and laity and everyone making the weekend is urged to participate by taking notes and discussing. The weekend ends at the close of the three days. However, the whole point of the movement is that ordinary people can steadily grow in the love and the service of God and humanity for the rest of their lives. Christian growth is not easy, but the weekend provides a framework for it, both during the three days and afterwards. In the Cursillo emphasis is on maintaining a vibrant and growing Christian community from which springs the apostolic action required to make ours a better world in which to live. Upcoming weekends: June 9-12, 2011 for men; July 28-31, 2011for women. Further weekends are scheduled for the Fall. Contact Father Peter or Deacon Frank for further information and application.

Illinois State University Newman Center Students are going on Pilgrimage this Summer!
This August, around twenty students from the John Paul II Catholic Newman Center at Illinois State University in Normal, IL will be going on a three week pilgrimage. The group will begin by visiting Lourdes, France; a place of great healing where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to St. Bernadette in 1858. They will then travel to Madrid, Spain for World Youth Day, an event where millions of young Catholics gather together with the Pope. Finally, the students will head back to France to see the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal before returning to the U.S. The Newman Center continues to be a blessing for students of the ISU, Illinois Wesleyan, and Heartland College. During a time of life when it is easy to get caught up in the stereotypical "college lifestyle", the Church offers students an opportunity to grow in virtue, learn about their Catholic Faith, and fall in love with the Lord. Many beautiful testimonies, including some from young adults who have grown up in Christ the King Parish, are continually coming out of the Center which students adopt as their "home away from home". Students from the Newman Center will be at Christ the King selling Rosaries and prayer journals in order to raise money for their trip after Masses on June 4 and 5, as well as taking prayer requests to bring to Lourdes!

Novena to the Holy Spirit

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen. (To be recited daily during the Novena) PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me: The Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, The Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, The Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, The Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, The Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, The Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, The Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen. (To be recited daily during the Novena) Bend the stubborn heart and will, melt the frozen warm the chill. Guide the steps that go astray! The Gift of Wisdom- Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is the most perfect of the gifts. Of wisdom it is written "all good things came to me with her, and innumerable riches through her hands." It is the gift of Wisdom that strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity, and promotes the practice of virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savor, whilst the Cross of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Saviour: "Take up thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light. Prayer- Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess them for ever. Amen.
Our Father and Hail Mary ONCE. Glory be to the Father SEVEN TIMES.

The Gift of Life

Generous donations to the church, by the Knights of Columbus, the Saint Vincent DePaul food pantry, the Council of Catholic Women, and from the proceeds from the sale of the commemorative bricks, have provided for the purchase of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) for the church building. It will be installed in the Narthex, for easy access, as soon as possible. In partnership with the vendor, training for ushers and greeters in CPR and AED use will be scheduled. In addition, the training will be offered in CPR and AED use to all of the parishioners of Christ the King- free of charge! This training, by a parishioner, Roberta Beckman, will be in compliance with American Heart Association standards. If you wish an AHA certificate of course completion, there will be a $10 charge. The classes should take about 2 hours. Lombard fire department has asked us to purchase this, which will be a safety net for our parishioners who may need it.

Anniversary of Priesthood
Our friend and brother Fr. Guiney will celebrate his anniversary of priesthood in June. While he has requested that no public function be held to commemorate the occasion, if you wish you may donate to one of the places where Fr. Guiney served as a missionary in Africa. Father has served us here since my beginnings as Pastor 9 years ago this June. The donations that are given will be sent by his community directly to the Leper Colony, Liberia, West Africa. In your card, you may want to send spiritual bouquets of prayer for the children and adults. For example: I will pray 7 rosaries, 2 hours of Adoration. Also your spiritual bouquets may be directed to Fr. Guiney for his health, happiness and continued strength to serve as Priest. Your donation check should be written to Fr. John Guiney, SMA (not Christ the King Parish). The memo space should have written: The Bonike Leper Colony, Liberia, West Africa. This effort of gratitude will be done for the month of June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On Saturday June 4th, at 5:00 pm, Fr. Guiney will celebrate the Liturgy. I will have an image of the Sacred Heart in the narthex, with a container for your cards to Fr. Guiney. Questions: call Fr. Peter. Sacred Heart of Jesus we trust in you. Fr. Peter

If you are interested in the CPR / AED training session, please complete the information below, and drop it in the collection basket. OR, see a member of the Administration Commission in the Narthex after Mass this weekend. Once we determine the number of responses, scheduling and more information will be available. Christ the King Early Learning Academy Update

Before we know it, God will bless us with a beautiful summer and the Academy will return in August! We were very fortunate to have had Miss Marlene visit our students from Helen Plum Library for a story time to share books about springtime. We thank Pat Luedtke, our volunteer librarian, for being such an advocate for literacy at our school. She has done a marvelous job planning curriculum, preparing activities, Smart Board lessons, managing the Book Fair, and making sure that the all students have access to our wonderful library! We appreciate all her hard work! As the month of May comes to an end we are reminded of several things:

Please make sure your child is registered for the next school year-we are anticipating waiting lists. There are registration forms in the narthex of the church or stop by the school MonFri 7:30am-2:30pm now until May 27th or check online.

The school office will have summer hours beginning Tues., May 31-Thurs., June 30th from
7:30am-11:00am. The office is then closed for awhile and will reopen on Monday, August 8th at 7:30am. Phone messages will be monitored throughout the summer so dont hesitate to call us at 630-627-0640 if you have any questions or would like a tour.

If you havent done your spring cleaning yetconsider doing in time for Memorial Day weekend. Items may be dropped off Memorial Day weekend in front of the school for the White Elephant Rummage Sale. Please do not drop off items before that weekend as it interferes with our school day. We cannot accept: TVs, computers, computer monitors, baby cribs, or car seats. appreciated! Your children look to you to be good role models and help them develop their faith continuously. It is our responsibility to nurture and help their faith grow! See you at church! We hope everyone has a safe and blessed summer, The Academy Staff.

To all Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:

Last week you received a letter regarding Protecting God's Children. I want to take a moment to clarify some of the questions that have arisen regarding this. Protecting God's Children is a workshop that informs and educates volunteers about safe environment for adults and youth. The Protecting God's Children program has been ongoing for eight years in our parish, our Diocese, and at Dioceses around the country. Over one hundred of our parish volunteers have already completed this program. However, as explained in last week's letter, a recent audit of our parish files by the Dean of the Diocese brought to our attention that, in addition to those who work constantly with the children, all Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Sacristans and Ushers must also attend this program. We are offering the session here at Christ the King on Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the PLC - OR Numerous offerings at parishes around our Diocese Please visit www.virtusonline.org to register for our sessions, or to see what other sessions are available. If you are unable to attend our session, there are many other parishes in our area that are offering this program also. If you have trouble registering online, please contact Eileen Maggiore at Eileen@ctklombard.org or 630.396.6076. We understand that it can be difficult to take time out to attend one of these sessions; but please realize that this now a requirement of the Diocese of Joliet, and we must comply. Attending this workshop one time will fulfill your mandated responsibility. All volunteers must complete a Protecting Gods Children workshop by June 30, 2011. Bill Runge Director of Music and Liturgy
