WEEK 7- CONTINUATION OF RIZAL’S FIRST TRAVEL

JOURNEY WITH DR. MAXIMO VIOLA

 When Rizal receive the allowance that Paciano gave him Rizal immediately paid Maximo
viola for his first novel publication which is Noli me Tangere.
 Jose Rizal told Maximo to visit more some places with his remaining money to observe
socio political observation
 On May 11, 1887, they left berlin and arrive Dresden which is their first destination to
visit Adolph Meyer, the Museum of Arts, witnessed the Floral exposition where they
met Dr. Feodor Jagor who advise him to write Ferdinand Blumenso that the latter may
not be surprised of his visit.
 Afterwards, they proceeded in Leitmeritz, Czechoslovakia via train where they met
Blumentritt. Blumentritt accompanied them at Hotel Kerbs where they rested
momentaril
 After Czechoslovakia, they visited Prague where they saw the tomb of Copernicus. And
then they proceed to the city of Vienna where they saw the grandeur churches,
museums, art galleries, theaters, and the public parks.
 On May 24, they left Vienna by a boat to see the beautiful sights of the Danube River.
The river voyage and travelled Solizburg to Munich, going to Munich, then to
Nuremberg, then proceeded to Ulm going straight to Stuttgart, Baden, and then to
Rheinhall continued their journey in Basel, Bern, and Lausanne, then heading towards
leman to Geneva.
 In Geneva they both celebrated the 26 th birthday of Maximo Viola and the place where
they decided to part ways and Maximo will going back to Barcelona while Rizal continue
to travel in Italy.
 Jose Rizal visited the famous places in Italy such as Turin, Milan, Venice, Florence and
Rome. After a long week of sightseeing in Rome, he prepared for his trip back home.

ARRIVAL IN MANILA (FIRST HOMECOMING)

 While Rizal travelling back to Manila, Paciano told him to take care since his first novel cause
forceful reaction from the friars believing which is the source of the problem of the Catholic
Church.
 August 05, 1887 when Rizal arrived in Manila and stayed there in a short time, Rizal’s family kept
secretly his arrival for they knew the friars will seize after him.
 August 08, 1887, he returned to Calamba and established medical clinic. His first patient was his
mother and the news of the arrival of the great doctor from Germany spread far and wide.
 He was determined to return in the Philippines for many reasons such us, operates on his
mother’s eyes, to serve the Filipino people that being oppressed by the Spanish tyrants and
observe haw his novel affect the Filipino’s and the Spanish people.
 February 1888, Rizal earned P5000 which help him to open gymnasium for young folks and
introduced European sports. during his six-month stay in Calamba, Jose Rizal failed to see

MEETING WITH GOVERNOR GENERAL Emilio TERRERO

 Few weeks of arrival, Rizal receive a letter coming from governor general Emilio Terrero to come
visit in Malacanang palace and talk about the novel that Rizal write. Rizal explain to Emilio
Terrero about the content and the intention of the novel Noli Me Tangere which make him
pleased and encouraged to read the book. Jose Rizal is the one who gave him copy of the novel.
 The Arcbishop of Manila, Msgr. Pedro Payo send a copy of the novel to Father Rector Gregorio
Echavarria in Santo Thomas for the examination of the novel by the committee of faculty. The
faculty gave negative feedbacks about the novel that Jose Rizal make.
 Governor General Emilio Terrero is dissatisfied by the feedbacks and report of the Dominicans
which is the reason that general Emilio send the novel to the permanent commission
censorship, full of priest, led by Fr. Salvador Font who is the head to investigate and verification
of the novel.
 it shows the same and recommended that importation, reproduction and circulation is
prohibited in the Philippines.
