CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study


An author by the name of Vince Lombardi uttered, “Perfection is not attainable, but if

we chase perfection, we can catch excellence”. This holds true in the events industry as

successful events are those that are well planned and organized. The ultimate satisfaction for

any event organizer is when its clients are all praises about how the event went smoothly and

as planned. Known and successful event planners in the country and in the locality, all have

their fair share of ups and downs in their careers and profession but all have been successfully

overcome this through dedicated work and attention to details.

According to www.eventeducation.com, an event can be described as a public and

private assembly for the purpose of celebration, education, marketing or reunion. Events can

be held for various purpose and type, they may be private, corporate and charity events.

Nowadays, clients would need the services of an event organizer. As defined by

jobdescriptionandresume.com, an event organizer is responsible for planning, managing and

organizing sensational events in the most efficient and cost-effective way. Its job description

entails searching target audiences in the market and finding occasions at which events are

organized. They also communicate with clients to know their specific needs and deliver the

best events, including career, educational, technology, and trade fairs, meetings, cultural

events and exhibitions.

Companies or businesses who wish to promote their companies’ brand and products

would sometimes need the services of event organizers to handle their corporate events. They

can be tapped by businesses of all sizes to solicit new business, create a brand image, and

retain and build loyalty with existing suppliers and customers. Another event type are charity
events where the main objective of the event is to raise money for certain causes that would

benefit any charitable institutions or cause oriented groups, gain much goodwill by

contributing to a community and over the long run it will also benefit to the business sectors

due to the public and community getting involved to help raise money for charity such as in

schools, business sectors and deprived sectors of the community.

Market presence of event organizers is inevitable especially in this age of technology

where most business present their products and services to the market through the world wide

web or the internet. In the traditional form of marketing, event organizers market their

business through advertising on radio and television, newspapers, magazines, posters but

have now resorted in using the using social media platform. Before, advertising their business

name, products and services through radio and television is one of the effective ways to reach

a wide audience. It allows you showcase your creativity through video clips or pictures.

Newspaper is wider than any other printed advertisement due to the fact that it can be

sold locally or national scope. By advertising their company by way of having articles about

events handled in the newspapers, you can make use of images and logos of your company

that can be found in the lifestyle sections or even in the classified ads. Magazines provide a

wealth of information, inspiration and creative ideas for readers. It also presents high quality

image that allows you for the best presentation of the events that you have organized. Posters

are easy to see and pictorial images are what makes poster advertising unique. They have the

ability to cause rapid response in clients. Good poster can arouse empathy, connecting your

company to the hearts and mind of the clients.

According to www.wordstream.com, social media marketing or SMM, is a form

of internet marketing that involves creating and sharing content on social media networks in

order to achieve your marketing and branding goals. Social media marketing includes


activities like posting text and image updates, videos, and other content that drives audience

engagement, as well as paid social media advertising.

Social media is quickly becoming one of the most important aspects of digital

marketing which provides incredible benefits that help reach millions of clients worldwide. It

is also an advantage to use any social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and

Instagram because it is cost-effective, accessible, can engage well with customers, and can

show the different successful images and video clips of event which can attract the client.

Creating and developing a website is also important for any business so it can be reliable for

overseas client, usually it assures client on the events company authenticity.

Having much benefits over its disadvantages, social media marketing for business

attract customers, get customer feedback, builds customer loyalty, increase market reach

locally and internationally, creates market research and reduce marketing costs. It also

increases revenue by building customer networks and advertising and growing your brand

awareness. Social media marketing will make it easy to spread the word about your products

and mission. Increasing your traffic, using social media and linking it to your website will

increase your traffic tremendously. Promoting your products and services.

Disadvantages of social media marketing are quite a few as well. There will always be

negative feedbacks and sometimes tarnish brand names. To damage or to ruin the good

quality of something such as reputation, image and etc. Being on social media means

exposing yourself publicly to all kinds of people who may or may not have the intention of

coming across or seeing your brand. We all know there is always a dark side to everything.
Statement of the Problem

1.) What are the lived experiences of event organizers in terms of the use of Social Media

Marketing Platform;

2.) Is Social Media an effective marketing platform;

3.) What are the advantages and disadvantages of Social Media Marketing Platform;

Objective of the Study

This research aims to understand and determine the Lived Experiences of Event

Organizers on the use of social media platforms in attracting potential clients. To get insights

on what are their experiences through use of social media marketing platforms and its impact

to their business and to their employees. Also, this could be an additional information for

aspiring event organizers as to what social media platform would be the best and most

accessible to event organizers and clients.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The research will focus on the Lived Experiences of events organizers on the use of

social media marketing platforms such as Facebook page, Twitter or Twitter accounts. The

respondents will all be based in Tacloban City. To verify the responses of the event

companies/organizers, the employees of these companies and some of the clients they’ve had

in the past will be sought.

The limitation of the study will be the acceptance of the main respondents on the

objectives of the study, their apprehension towards telling their experiences by using social
media as a marketing platform. The data gathering procedure that will be used for this

research study will be through face-to-face. If face-to-face interview would not be possible,

the researchers will be proceeding to a virtual interview.

Significance of the Study

The significance of the study is that the result of the research will benefit the

respondents through the different inputs on the usage of social media marketing platform

from other event companies in Tacloban City. The research will also identify the best and

most effective social media marketing platform used by the respondents.

The research will help other event companies in Tacloban City who are not engaging

on the use of social media marketing platforms as they will know what advantages it could

give. Also, this could help the researchers, who will be future eventologists in Tacloban City

to gain inputs from experiences of these event companies on how to best market their

products and services.

Research Hypothesis

The research postulates that there are advantages on the use of social media marketing

platforms for event companies in Tacloban City. Furthermore, it provides inputs from these

event companies that will be useful for present event companies who are considering the use

of social media marketing platforms for their business and for those future eventologists as it

could guide them as they start their own events business.

media to promote, to have business transaction and also, in attracting potential clients. On the
other hand, clients who are looking for event handlers that fits on his/her event can easily

organizers and clients benefit the used of social media.

Eventologist – anyone who conducts efficient and satisfying events for clients

Event Company – a business entity that offers events management services to clients

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This paper offers a series of literature review for the relatedness and implication to the

present study. In this review the researchers collected different studies from different sources

such as online journals and websites that are related to the study. Also, it aims to determine

the lived experiences of the event organizers in using social media as marketing platforms.

In recent days with the increase in the use of advanced technology in the field of

digital media there is a drastic changes and improvements that has taken place in the arena of

communication, the traditional methods of advertising and communicating and researching to

the expected customers are not that convincing when compared with the new type of

communication methods, which have come into existence in recent days, the latest type of

electronic communication is much faster, simpler and easily accessible and also highly

economical in its operation, most of the times the cost involved may be negligible and can

reach to higher number of relevant customers. With growing immense popularity of internet,

the advancement in the electronic media is gaining popularity. Traditional medium of

communication has been replaced by this interactive form of digital medium of

communication. Since, differentiation is the winning mantra of any form of advertising; event

marketing has definitely taken a hot seat. Social media have provided new opportunities to

consumers to engage in social interaction on the internet. Consumers use social media, such

as online communities, to generate content and to network with other users. The study of

social media can also identify the advantages to be gained by business


Social media management is about leveraging social platforms like Facebook,

Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter to maximize the reach of your business through online

presence and interaction.

Using social media, you can engage audiences through targeted content. While also

monitoring and measuring their responses to better understand what part of your strategy

works and what doesn’t. Previously, social media was sidelined. But it is now at the forefront

of strategy development for numerous businesses. That is because it allows brands to not only

keep up with their audiences but also engage with them in a way that increases sales and ROI.

In the past, the industry heavily relied on live events as its main source for building

connections and doing business. But due to advancements, the social and technological

landscape has changed. Currently, 86% of event marketers are optimistic that technology can

greatly impact the success of their events. Social media offers huge earning potential to

businesses. Meaning that with the right tools and tactics, your brand can tap into markets it

could not access before

Social signals are among the most important factors in online marketing. Especially

for complex decision-making processes, such as ticket purchasing or registration.

Every action, update, post, presentation, picture or video that you upload to social media will

have an impact on your online marketing efforts. When a prospective attendee is evaluating

whether to purchase a ticket to your event, they will inevitably stumble on what you

presented on social media.

This process has a terrific impact on how event websites rank for specific keywords

on Google. If in fact, content is social media’s currency, using it wisely will have substantial

search engine optimization implications. The more you concentrate on creating value via

relevant and focused content, the better your event website will perform on Google.
Likewise, signals from social media, including lots of impressions, sharing and click-

throughs can have a direct impact on your search engine rankings.

Social Media is the answer to the prayers of [event] planners that are looking for

unique and creative ways to enhance engagement. It gives a new voice to participants and

allows for new dimensions of communication.

Social media sites are internet pages where people interact freely, sharing and

discussing information about each other and their lives, using a multimedia mix of personal

words, pictures, videos and audio. They appear in many forms including blogs and

microblogs, forums and message boards, social networks, Wikis, virtual worlds, social

bookmarking, writing communities and scrapbooking.

When planning your event, it is becoming increasingly important to have a Social

Media Strategy because for the Event Manager, social media provides exciting tools that can

be used before, during and after the event

Social media is one of the most important areas of communication, with its improved

infrastructure facilities and its ever-increasing variety (Aktan & Çakmak, 2015). In today's

internet age, social media has become a platform that allows people to turn themselves into

“media” to collaborate and share information (Thevenot, 2007; Li & Wang, 2011). When

evaluated from this point of view, it is possible to express social media as a communication

tool that makes information sharing and communication very fast and easy (Koçyigit, 2015).

However, the main strength of social media is its ability to enable two-way communication

rather than information sharing (Chu & Kim, 2015). Furthermore, being mobile-based

without time and space limitations, social media establishes a form of communication in

which sharing, discussion and exchange of ideas is the main factor. Therefore, content
sharing can take place instantly, quickly and easily, without the need for an intermediary,

through social media (Vural & Bat, 2010) which consists of the dialogues and sharing that

individual have with each other on the internet (Kaynak & Koç, 2015). Hence, from this point

of view, social media is seen as an important marketing tool to be used in event marketing.

As a result, in today’s generation businesses and arising companies such as event

companies comprises more on online transaction towards their client participants and

consumers. Social media gives opportunities and big advantages to the event organizers

towards their works. It gives a quick idea on how to deal with their clients peacefully and

hustle free through the use of social media. It helps also people who’d thinking to start their

event business to use also in today’s trending ways of marketing with the use of developing

social media platforms.


CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

Hermeneutic phenomenology will be used to generate, analyze and interpret the

narratives of event organizers who used social media marketing platforms in running their

business transactions. Van Manen’s (2014) hermeneutic phenomenological approach is used

to explore and interpret the essence of the experience from the first-person point of view.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The study will be conducted in Tacloban City, Leyte among event organizers who

have using social media marketing platform in running their business transactions.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

The respondents involved in this research study are those Event Organizers who are

residing in the city with lived experiences on using social media marketing platform for their

business. And, respondents must have experiences in the industry for at least one (1) year.

RESEARCH SAMPLING

The researchers used a purposive sampling method for data gathering of this study

wherein specific respondents will be interview and to gather data based on their experiences,

a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of ten (10) respondents to ensure a representative

sample of respondents for the study


RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The research instrument is consisted of two parts. First part of the research instrument

consists of the respondent’s profile such as their name, sex, age, educational attainment,

company, position in the company and number of years in company. And, the second part of

the research instrument consists with a free-flowing question. The researchers will conduct a

virtual interview at least ten to fifteen chosen respondents that are residing in Tacloban City

using Google Meet, Zoom Video-conference, Fb Messenger chat or face-to-face Interview.

RESEARCH GATHERING

The researchers will interview those event organizers or companies who has been in

the industry for at least one (1) year. Data generation will start after the consent for interview

is agreed, the interviews may be conducted whichever is applicable, such as using Google

Meet, Zoom Video-conference, FB Messenger or face-to-face discussion.

The researchers will conduct in-depth online or face-to-face interviews with a free-

flowing question-and-answer discussion. Notes and audio-video recordings will be generated

to ensure richer data. The duration of the interviews will be from 20-30 minutes.

Transcriptions will be done by the researchers as a means of gathering the different themes

based on the response gathered from the respondents through the research questions.

Moreover, respondents will be contacted to elucidate their stories to provide clarity and better

analyses and interpretations of the data if necessary.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter’s main purpose is to extract useful information from data and taking the
most relevant information from the data gathered. The data gathered were transcribed for full
liquidation of all the information gathered by the researchers during the virtual interview
conducted. Significant Points from the interview were analyzed, translated, and interpreted by
the researchers.

Sir Ryan Sarmiento:

*sigh ok I am ryan Sarmiento 30 yrs old so male I finish my bachelor course in ahmmm no I

started my first year level in abuyog community college taking of bachelor of science in
hotel and restaurant management. I worked in sophia’s way event center for almost 11 years

this coming June 2022 my current position at this time I am an event manager at the same

time in house coordinator for government and private events ive been working for sophias

way It started in barko in leyte park way back 2010 I think and 2011 after my only job

training I was assign in house keeping department and F&B department so I was absorbed by

management of leyte park and then I was assign at barko restaurant and grill then another

reassignment for secret garden since the management is the same and then after that as I go

along with the training in different areas I was also assign in the element bar in clouds

65hundred that club is the most famous club in eastern Visayas I could say club 65hundred is

composed of different night life activities so yun dun parang medyo nahasa pa yung

personality when it comes to event we are not only organizing or inviting local performer we

are inviting some performers from manila cebu and even from the international then suddenly

Yolanda came way back 2013 it was very saddest part of my career because wala talaga as in

nothing kahit yung mga credentials kahit yung Id wala talaga so after like 2months or

3months my boss decided to open up again but the barko and the secret garden has no longer

in the event industry so we decided to open sophias way named after the eldest daughter of

my boss Sophia and way comes from my second name my boss jadway so yun and then

parang nilagyan lang siya ng food center sa BIR business name namin. Sophias way is more

on specializing events and catering services so sophias way was named way back 2014 up to

2022 and more years to come so we provide hundreds of employees we provide employment

to the people not only in Tacloban but also in the near by provinces and municipalities so that

the aim of sophias way


1. Does your social media marketing platform help you more now than before?

Answer: to be honest yes, its because that people nowadays using social media like facebook

Instagram so we all know the fact that all our needs and wants can be found in social media.

2. What social media marketing platform you are using for your event business?

Answer: So again we are not only focusing in event we are focusing on events and catering

services pag talaga pag mag organize ka ng event it should be hassle free for the client when

you go in sophias way when sit down pag mag create ka ng appointment I didiscussed talaga

sa inyo yung kailangan niyong sa events isa na yung catering at the same time the venue

ofcourse kailangayan yun social meda platfrom na ginagamit naming ngayon is facebook

accounts and we have also our page named sophias way and sophias way event center so we

are using the both account.

3. From the clients you have handled, how many percent is coming from your social

media marketing platform?

Answer: we cannot say it na actually the total number but we are pretty sure that most of our

guest nag sstart muna talaga yan sa reviews, social media’s and checking the feedbacks.

Sometimes yung ibang guest na nag book sa Sophia’s way or nag conduct nang activities and

shini-share nila yung ibang experience nila sa ibang tao. May positive outcome din naman

yung mga Marites in town. Ofcourse lahat yan sila nagkakaroon nang reviews.

4. What are the problems you encounter towards your possible clients from your social

media marketing platform?


Answer: Okay, sometimes it problems na eencounter naton using social media platform.

Andiyan nayan example Internet Connections yan ang mostly natin na encounter, second

yung page kasi open nayan anytime so may mga messages yan na pumapasok may inquiry

anytime kahit gabi kasi may mga clients tayo na outside of the Philippines magkaiba tayo

nang oras niyan nagkakaroon tayo nang problema diyan kasi minsan di agad natin minsan na

rereplayan akala nila di active yung page and sometimes its because super busy super

maraming ginagawa let’s say for example yung page naming anka sign in dun sa computer

medjo busy talga yung area nakakaligtaan siya monitor in time to time nag nonotify naman

siya sa phone but since nga may mga time talaga na busy so minsan pag kinabukasan or

every kasunod na oras parang hindi na memeet yung time parating concer naming and at the

same time the internet provider kasi naka link yung page niyo sa computer hindi kasi

nagagamit yung data like our phone kaso pag phone kasi time consuming instead you are

doing something or may hinahanap ka na ibang client using your phone na parang time

consuming siya but we encourage nagrereply naman kami sa page nang hihingi nang sorry to

and then we ano try to get their number para mabilis ma actionan.

5. Do you consider the use of social media as effective marketing tool for your business?

If yes, why? If no, why?

Answer: Yes, kasi yung nga as I said earlier lahat naman tayo may mga social media kahit na

mga grade school students they have their social media especially now a days lahat nang

kahit sa school ginagamitan tayo nang assignments using social media so same with us in the

event industry we really need that the social media kasi that’s our way to show people

pagpakita sa ibang tao na nag eexist kami. Sinasabi ko kanina may mga magandang

nadudulot yung mga Marites at this time syempre iba parin talaga yung nakakarating kung
mga marites marites lang yun. Iisipin natin within the community lang yan so what we are

talking about social media so involve na yan outside or inside of our country.

6. Do you intend to spend more on increasing coverage or reach for your SMMP? If yes,

why? If no, why?

Answer: Parang hindi naman masyado I mean sa ngayon in this time pandemic hindi muna

kung ano ang mga existing na mga pages and accounts natin sa facebook yung lang muna by

now. Kasi nag try kami mag open nang websites or sites before its too expensive for the

company yung marketing niya doon masyadong mababa yung study naming, yung tao more

on facebook not on websites so yun ang nagets ko kung ano ako ang tinatanong niyo saken

mag dadagdag kami nang sites I think we have to stay lang on pages or our facebook

acoounts.

7. Do you intend to use more SMMP for your company? Why?

ANSWER:

I think again it’s the same parang hindi rin we have to stick parin talaga on what we have

now, kasi its really confusing for us to introduce it again sometimes some people yung ibang

taclobanon hindi mo masyadong magaling magaling sa websites hindi masyadong mabusisi

unlike sa facebook.

8. What do you think is more effective marketing tool applicable to your company?

ANSWER: Ofcourse kung hindi lang dahil sa pandemic number 1 na marketing tool namen
before is we join this kind of expo so this is every twice I think. This wedding expo has group

of companies and group of businesses inline with event industries so may mga event industry

nagkakamayda ng invitations nagkakaroon ng shows or exhibit sa mga malls and then that’s

our one way to introduce our company at the same time yung mga mall goers binibigyan ng

flyers and special discounts for the said events is of course we have this marketing tools such

as flyers and posts on social media before we did meron tayong flyrings sa mga malls this

pandemic delikado binoboost nalang naming yung post sa social media

9. In the number of years you have handled different events, what were the different

benefits it has given you & your company?

I am proud to say this we have a lot of benefits aside from my salary the basic needs benefits

of businesses of government benefits. Way back before Yolanda, before pandemic I have this

kind of percentage sa events 3% of course tanggal muna lahat. May percentage tayo na

binibigay si company like its percentage or incentives and then travel every year merong to

travel kung saan mo talaga mag travel and then your uniform allowance, meals from

breakfast to dinner kung ano ang gusto mong kaninin go okay lang so yun yung mga benefits

when you work with Sophia’s Way. Transportations as long as it is related to your work wala

kang problema as long as there is available vehicle for you pwede mong magamit advantage

kung marunong kang mag drive. So pagdating naman sa mga car incentives they try to

propose to me but I refused because responsibility lang yan eh kung baga hindi siya asset

being liabilities. Instead, you are earning you are spending ng sasakyan.

10. Do you feel competition in very high among event organizers in the city like you?

Why?
I do not consider as competition, friendly competitions lang lahat naman kami

magkakaibigan as in super lahat magkakaibigan kase maliit lang ang Tacloban, if mag

attitude ka so alam mo na so dapat chill kalang. Any ways hindi mo kailangan makipag

siksikan ang sarili mo yun lang. Kung may papasok sayo sayo yun pag hind isa iba yun.

Kumakain din sila may binubuhay din silang pamilya. Parang ano eh yung ang parati nasa

side naming eh kung mag bobook talaga yan so far dito sa event center we started 2014.

Before pandemic nag close ang Leyte Park kase pinagmamayari na nag government na siya.

Since pumunta kami dito sa event center parang di naman na zezero yung isang lingo kase

pag dating sa gabi meron naman kaming restaurant operations pag dating naman sa weekend

meron naman tayong government training. So walang pressure sa side naming.

Significant Points from the interview:

Facebook and Instagram because we can find our needs and wants can be found in social

media.

Interpretation: Social Media is the easier way to access someone’s needs and wants. It

serves as an effective platform to promote anything since everyone is usually on social

media.

2. we are pretty sure that most of our guest nag sstart muna talaga yan sa reviews, social

media’s and checking the feedbacks. Sometimes yung ibang guest na nag book sa

Sophia’s way or nag conduct nang activities and shini-share nila yung ibang

experience nila sa ibang tao.


Translation: We are pretty sure that most of our guests came from the social media reviews

and feedbacks. Sometimes, our former guests share their experience to other people too.

Interpretation: It is proven that social media marketing platform is effective because of the

reviews and comments that the former clients or guests have given. Because of this, it attracts

more number of potential clients.

3. Andiyan nayan example Internet Connections yan ang mostly natin na encounter,

second yung page kasi open nayan anytime so may mga messages yan na pumapasok

may inquiry anytime kahit gabi.

many more. We even have organizing festivals, pageants thats all.

1. Does your social media marketing platform help you more now than before?
Come again, there are a lot of benefits it has given me and in my company. Number one of

course it helps me have more income that’s the ultimately the advantage or the benefits that

ive got. Aside from that I get to be known from small events to bigger events. I started on the

wedding of my classmates in high school from then on my friends get me from their family

events then after that referrals have been made. So if I have been referred to someone that my

friends know are familiar of that one of the benefits because I been marketed by my friends

and not only that because social media was not that known or not yet in use years before so

uhm the benefits that gave me of course it give me additional income sometimes bigger than

become more stiffer because they tend to be more competitive they tend to be more

I am using facebook as a SMMP, it has been up since 2015. Im not using Instagram but I will

Yes uhm, I consider it effective because I get to have in a past 4 years I get to have clients

from SMMPs. SMMP for me is my personal account uhm my business page helps me

events are from word of mouth from referral personal referrals somewhat 40% of my events

come from my social media marketing platform or my facebook page. So I get inquiries from

Yes, actually it would help me a lot because when we started our business we only depend on

some other social media platforms but some of my friends suggested that why not
