What is deck machinery?
The various items of
machinery and equipment found
outside of the machinery space
of modern ship.
These include deck machinery
such as mooring equipment,
anchor handling equipment, cargo
handling equipment and hatch
covers.
Other items include
lifeboats and life rafts,
emergency equipment, watertight
doors, stabilizers and bow
thrusters.

1. Winch
Mooring winches
secure the shipboard
end of mooring lines,
provide for adjustment
of the mooring line
length and compensate
for changes in draft and
tide.

2. Windlass
A machine designed to
hoist or lower an anchor.
It consist of a horizontal
barrel that is fitted with
gear-like projections
(cable lifter) that engage
the links of the anchor
chain.

3. Crane
Hoisting devices used
for cargo handling and
other operations. Cranes
are required to hoist, luff
and slew.

4. Davit
Lifting devices for
handling lifeboats,
rescue boats, life rafts,
hoses.

5. Hatch Cover
A large steel structure
fitted over a hatch
opening to prevent the
ingress of water into the
cargo hold.
The hatch cover has to
be weatherproof and has
to remain so when
conditions change as a
result of waves,
temperature and cargo.

6. Watertight Door
Watertight doors that
are used while at sea are
to be sliding doors
capable of being
remotely closed from the
bridge and are also to be
operable locally from
each side of bulkhead.

7. Bow Thruster
A lateral thruster fitted
in an athwartships
tunnel near the bow to
improve
maneuverability.

8. Stabilizer
The function of a fin
stabilizer, found at the
bottom part of the ship’s
hull, is to provide
resistance to the excess
rolling of ship in either
direction.
