Command word definitions and guidance

Hello All,

We get a lot of queries about command words and so we have drawn up the
list below to help you. For each command word we have given the official
NEBOSH definition and then a simplified definition. We hope you find them
useful!

Describe:
To give a detailed written account of the distinctive features of a subject. The
account should be factual, without any attempt to explain. When describing
a subject (or object) a test of sufficient detail would be that another person
would be able to visualize what you are describing.

In simple terms: More detail that an “outline” with details to be given so that

someone with no prior knowledge can understand the answer and be able to
picture it clearly. For example: painting a picture with words to give much
more detail than a summary.

Explain:
To provide an understanding. To make an idea or relationship clear. NB: this
command word is testing the candidate’s ability to know or understand why
or how something happens. Is often associated with the words ‘how’ or
‘why’.

In simple terms: A description of each point and then putting it into context,
or justifying, in relation to the scenario or topic of the question.

Outline:
To indicate the principal features or different parts of.
Note: An exhaustive description is not required. What is sought is a brief
summary of the major aspects of whatever is stated in the question.

In simple terms: The main aspects of a given point that will put it into
context and should include the main aspects, essential features of, or
summary. For example: how, why, what, where, type of, etc.
Define:
To give the meaning of a word, phrase or concept, determine or fix the
boundaries or extent of. A relatively short answer, usually one or two
sentences, where there is a generally recognized or accepted expression.

word or phrase. For this course, these are often from official sources such as
legislation, ACoPs, reports or other well-known sources.

Identify:
To give reference to an item, which could be its name or title. NB: normally a
word or phrase will be sufficient, provided the reference is clear.

In simple terms: A list of words or phrases that names the information

requested by the question. There is no requirement to write full
sentences providing the information is clear.
