ACookbook For Special Days, Special People is the latest in a series of publications by baker and digital content creator Shivesh Bhatia, 26. Incidentally, this is his first book for children. It features 42 recipes for 21 special days. There are special preparations like the chocolate and vanilla cake trifle for Father’s Day or peanut butter puppy biscuits for Pet Day. The idea is to create new memories with people (and pets) who matter. The exquisite illustrations by Maitreyee Namjoshi add to the understanding of the process. Children can turn this into a project of sorts, testing a recipe each weekend or a holiday, writes Avantika Bhuyan. In Food >> Cook A cookbook for young readers Struggling to carve out 30-45 minutes a day for a proper workout? Worry not, you can still stay fit and healthy with exercise snacking: shorter, more condensed workouts sprinkled through the day. It’s time to focus on the small things you can do consistently rather than significant, inconsistent actions to feed your success, writes Jen Thomas. She points out that one can break a 30-minute workout into six 5-minute bouts of exercise that can be done on the fly—think squats on a washroom break, a quick walk when you take a phone call and wall or desk pushups— making it unnecessary to spend endless time at the gym. In Health >> Fitness Stay in shape with snack-sized workouts What connects Charles Baudelaire, Emily Brontë, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso, apart from greatness and a propensity for mental health disorders? A deep and abiding love for cats. Preeti Zachariah, an unabashed cat lover, agrees with a new study which shows that people with strong and highly reactive emotions seek and benefit from contact with cats. There is nothing like spending time with cats to help you manage your emotions, writes Zachariah, pointing out that cats teach you a great deal about maintaining clear boundaries. In Relationships >> Pets Why cats are your best friends Miss Marple returns in a new anthology Agatha Christie wrote in her autobiography that Miss Marple, her famous detective, was “the sort of old lady who would have been rather like some of my step-grandmother’s Ealing cronies—old ladies whom I have met in so many villages where I have gone to stay as a girl”. The description is fitting because in the eyes of a child, senior citizens equal Christmas coming early. They are full of worldly wisdom and have stories to explain everything; what more could a child want? This same childlike affection is the most attractive quality of Marple: Twelve New Stories, a new collection of short stories featuring Miss Marple, writes Aditya Mani Jha. But fresh evidence has resulted in further investigations. Ajay Devgn stars as the unflappable Vijay, Akshaye Khanna plays the detective on the case, and Tabu reprises her role as IG Meera Deshmukh. Abhishek Pathak directs the film, which is based on Jeethu Joseph’s 2021 Malayalam film of the same name. (In theatres) ROUTE 10 After their flight gets cancelled, Maryam and Nasser hit Route 10— Highway 10 in Saudi Arabia is said to be the world’s longest stretch of straight road—to travel from Riyadh to Abu Dhabi for their father’s wedding. On this isolated stretch of road, which cuts through a desert, they are chased by a stranger in a souped-up white jeep who seems intent on killing them. The film sets up this suspense but does not deliver on it. It’s not clear who this stranger is or what his motive is. After a point, the cat and mouse game—like the straight road—becomes monotonous. (Netflix) PEARL OF THE DESERT When director Pushpendra Singh visited Barna village in Rajasthan, he became fascinated by the Manganiyar oral tradition of teaching. There, Singh came across Moti, a talented young singer. Moti’s journey—his musical education, lessons from his uncle and others, and his first steps towards a performing career—became the story of the film. It took five years to make Pearl Of The Desert, with Singh returning periodically to Barna to shoot. There are stunning scenes with Moti in the desert, his voice echoing through the deserted landscape, and of bhanat work songs. (MUBI) A GOAN fIEStA It has been five years since O Pedro opened in Mumbai, turning the tables on what it means to serve regional Goan food in a contemporary format. Think poee waffles, chorizo Benedict, pork sausage puff and more. To celebrate a milestone anniversary, they have a month-long celebration, the theme being The Great Goan Getaway. There’s a new menu featuring dishes reimagined with ingredients from Goa, such as the Burrata Salad served over a kokum-beetroot purée, roasted pumpkin, melon seeds, and more. There are weekend brunches with vindaloo Benedict, chorizo chilli fry baked eggs and Alle Belle pancakes. 25 November will see a bar takeover, followed by a rum-tasting workshop on 26 November. A hIp hOp fEStIVAL It’s going to be a musical weekend in the Capital, with artists like Gully Gang, King, Azadi Records and King performing as part of Simba Uproar 2022. Spread across two days, the festival, conceived as a platform for hip hop artists and street culture in India, will combine a showcase of food, beverages and music. “With artists hailing from the underground and the mainstream, this genre has evolved to be the most sought after. We want to highlight the extent of the ‘bond’ Indians have with them today,” says Ishwaraj Bhatia, co-founder and chief operating officer, Simba Beer. Simba Uproar, at The Hub, DLF Promenade, Delhi, 19-20 November. Tickets available on insider.in —Compiled by Jahnabee Borah and Avantika Bhuyan. THE WONDER Elizabeth, an English nurse, is sent to a village in Ireland to observe a girl who has not eaten for four months. This 1862-set film, which seems to draw on a tradition of eerie rural British cinema, is directed by Sebastián Lelio (Gloria). Florence Pugh leads a formidable cast that includes Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Toby Jones and Ciarán Hinds. (Netflix) TILL DEATH Sahar, Reem, Omar and Hadi are back in this second season of the Lebanese series—there are also a bunch of new characters. Unlike season 1, Sahar and Reem are not out to trap rich men; this time, they are plotting to take revenge on Hadi. At 30 episodes per season, it is long-winded. But it is also a commentary on Lebanon’s financial crisis and its insane inflation, of how more and more people are being pushed into poverty.
