Hi there!

I'll share with you what is the difference between the EDFA amplifier and Raman amplifier.

An optical fiber amplifier (OFA) is a component for improving optical signal strength,
which can be classified into the rare-earth-dope OFA and the non-linear OFA.
What is EDFA amplifier?
EDFA: Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier

In a rare-earth-dope OFA, doped ions in fibers transit to a sub-stable high-excitation state

after being excited by pump light. In this way, stimulated radiation is generated and
coherent amplification is performed on the signal light. An EDFA is a typical rare-earth-
dope OFA.

An optical device that amplifies optical signals. This device uses a short optical fiber
doped with the rare-earth element, Erbium. The signal to be amplified and a pump laser
are multiplexed into the doped fiber, and the signal is amplified by interacting with
doping ions. When the amplifier passes an external light source pump, it amplifies the
optical signals in a specific wavelength range.

The classification of EDFAs

1. Common power amplifiers and high power amplifiers (HPAs) based on the power

2. Single-level amplifiers and multi-level amplifiers by the number of cascaded EDFAs

What is Raman amplifier?

RFA: Raman Fiber Amplifier

A non-linear OFA is a laser amplifier that amplifies signal light by using the non-linear
effect of optical fibers. When the optical power density in the fiber reaches a certain
threshold, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) or stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is
generated to achieve coherent amplification of signal light. A Raman amplifier is a typical
non-linear OFA.

RFA allows signal amplification at any wavelength. The working principle is based on
stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Undoped optical fiber is used. The photon that is
inserted excites the electron and it goes into a vibrating state. Then, the stimulated
emission occurs when the electron de-excites to the vibrational state of the glass
molecules in the optical fiber.

The classification of Raman Amplifiers

1. Based on the position of the Raman amplifier on the fiber line, Raman amplifiers are
classified into forward Raman amplifiers and backward Raman amplifiers.
2. According to the composition of Raman amplifiers, Raman amplifiers can be classified
into independent Raman amplifiers and hybrid Raman amplifiers.

As technology develops, independent Raman amplifiers have been gradually replaced by

the integrated hybrid Raman amplifiers.

For example, Huawei's TN11RAU1 board contains Raman optical modules and EDFA
optical modules.

Functional modules and signal flow of the TN11RAU1:

What is the difference between EDFA amplifier and Raman amplifier?

Both the EDFA and Raman amplifiers feature high gain, low noise figure, and high output
power. The following table lists the differences between the two types.
