INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Attempt all questions in section A and any five in section B.
2. Silent Scientific non-programmable calculators may be used.
3. Number your answers to the questions attempted clearly.
4. Where necessary, take g = 9.8ms-2
5. Mathematical tables and/or graph papers are provided.

1. X and Y are two independent events such that P(X) = 3 and P(X or Y) = 15 .Find;
(i) P(Y)
(ii) P ( X ∪ Y ).
2. Three forces act along the sides of a square of side 4cm as shown below.

Find the resultant force and the equation of line action of the resultant.
3. The table below gives the values of test score in Geometry and Algebra.
Geometry 1 6 9 12 16 29 28 11 16 10
Algebra 20 12 14 20 4 3 14 25 39 8
Calculate a rank correlation coefficient for the data and comment on your results.
5. The probability that a student passes a question is 0.2. If a student attempts a100
questions at random, find:
(i) the expected number of right answers.
(ii) the probability that the student scores at least 30%. 1
6. The times by which students are late for a given lessons is normally distributed with a
mean of 15 minutes and a variance of 5 minutes. Find the probability that times by
which students are late for lessons lies between 8 and 12 minutes.
7. A stone is thrown vertically upwards at 20ms -1 and after 1 second another is thrown
vertically upwards with the same velocity and from the same point. Given that collide
find,
i) The time that elapses before they collide from the instant the first stone was
projected.
(5)
8. A stone is thrown at angle tan-1 12 to the horizontal with a speed of 25m-1. Find how
long the particle is above 5m from the ground.
9. The table shows the average marks out of 100 scored by candidates in statistics,
a) Draw a cumulative frequency curve and, hence, find 6 th – 8th decile range.
10. (a) Show that the Newton - Raphson formula for finding a better approximation
of the cube root of a number N is given by

3 n 2 x2n for n = 0, 1, 2, 3, …
11. (a) A particle is projected from a point 0 with a velocity of 4i + 3j ms-1 and
moves under gravity, find its velocity and position 3 seconds later.
(b) A stone is projected with a speed of60ms -1 at angle 30o to the horizontal.
At the same time-another is projected from a point 80m away in the opposite
direction at an angle of sin sin
−1
( 35 ) to the horizontal. Calculate.
(i) the velocity of projection of the second stone.
(ii) the time that elapses before the stones collide.

(c) Hence, calculate the percentage error when the integral is evaluated using the
trapezium rule.

14. A particle of mass 4kg is acted upon by a force 24t 2i + (36t - 16)j - 12tk. Initially the
particle is at a position 3i - j + 4k and moving with velocity 16i + 15j - 8k
Determine:
(i) the speed of the particle,
(ii) distance the particle covers,
(iii) rate of work done by the particle, when t = 2
15. The study time of students is normally distributed with mean 500 minutes and
standard deviation 50 minutes. A student passes if he studies for at least 360
minutes.
(a) Find; (i) the percentage of students who are likely to pass.
(ii) the minimum study time required for at most 21% of the students to
Pass.
(b) Obtain a 98% confidence interval for ~ if a sample of36 is taken from the
group.
16. The marks obtained by students in a test were found to be normally distributed.
It was observed that only 50% got above 75 marks and over 40% scored below 40
marks
Calculate:
a) The mean and standard deviation mark
b) The proportion of students who scored between 50 and 65 marks
c.) The probability that in a sample of 10 at least 3 have got above 80.
