Answer the following questions:

1. What apparatus can be used to measure volumes of liquid?

√ Graduated cylinders, beakers, volumetric pipets, burets and volumetric flasks are five kinds of glassware often
used to measure out specific volumes.

2. Which apparatus is best to use in measuring volume of liquid, beaker, graduated cylinder or pipette? Why?
√ Volumetric pipets are the most accurate; the glassware makers calibrate these to a high level of accuracy. The
accuracy is usually measured in terms of the tolerance, which is the uncertainty in a measurement made with the
glassware. Class A volumetric glassware has a lower tolerance than Class B; for class A, the tolerance can be as
low as 0.08 ml for a 100 ml flask or pipet. Generally, measurements with class A volumetric glassware can be
considered reliable to two places after the decimal point.

3. Is washing of apparatus before and after use a good practice in laboratory activity? Why?
√ Yes it is. Cleaning laboratory glassware before and after used is important because contaminated or dirty
glassware can lead to inaccurate results in the lab. A good way to confirm that your glassware is clean is to make
sure that distilled water uniformly wets the surface, this tells you that the surface is free of grease and other
contaminants that could alter the volume being measured or introduce impurities into the liquid.
