said this during his campaign trail at Kampung Sawah in
Tamparuli here.
“I am aware that some (candidates) have put up a man-
ifesto advocating for MA63, but it’s important to keep in
mind that negotiations between the State and Federal
Governments are necessary for this kind of demand to
materialise.
“We have a stable State Government that works in tan-
dem with the Federal Government. The strong link that
exists between governments is significant, and it should
be leveraged to its full potential in the fight to push for
state rights,” he said.
Joniston remarked that the Federal Government’s cre-
ation of the Sabah and Sarawak Affairs portfolio, headed
by Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) President and incumbent MP
for Kota Marudu Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, demon-
strated a stronger understanding between State and Fed-
eral on protecting the rights as enshrined in the MA63.
He stressed that the GRS-BN state administration under
the capable leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji
Noor would continue to fight for Sabah’s rights and sup-
port leadership that listens to Sabah’s concerns.
He then called on Tuaran constituents to throw their
support to GRS in the forthcoming election.
Joniston is set to wrest the Tuaran parliamentary seat
from incumbent Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau
(Pakatan Harapan).
He will also face Jo-Anna Sue Henley Rampas
(Warisan), Muminin Kalingkong @ Norbinsha (Parti
Pejuang Tanah Air), Bobby Lewat (Independent) and
Datuk Noortaip Suhaili (Independent).
Penampang folks
want MP who
will Turun Padang
PENAMPANG: Residents in this district feel uneasy each time
it rains. They don’t mind the brief, even heavy, downpours
but not when the rainfall appears light and never ends or
comes on and off. That to them is a sign of trouble.
The flash floods are a problem but what had been more
worrying in areas like Sugud that never witnessed devasta-
tion before until a year ago are mudflows entering homes.
Jeofrrin Likius of Kg Sugud said the village was twice sub-
merged this year alone and the worst was in September last
year. “I hope the flood mitigation project at Sungai Sugud
that has just started will be able to solve this problem at our
village,” he said.
Most of the assistance received by flood victims from his
village came from non-governmental organisations and
three bridges that had either been severely damaged or
washed away by floodwaters last year were not repaired or
replaced.
“That is why we want an elected representative who is sen-
sitive and alert to villagers’ issues.
“We want a leader who not only can speak up in Parlia-
ment but who always goes down to meet the people and lis-
ten to their problems,” he said.
Many flood victims turned emotional when Pakatan Hara-
pan candidate Datuk Ewon Benedick canvassed for votes in
the Kadazandusun-majority constituency recently.
Benedick, who is also the incoming Upko president, spent
time visiting several homes in Kampung Sugud, one of the
flood-prone villages in Penampang, which was hit again due
to heavy rain the night before.
They told Benedick, who was accompanied by Sabah
DAP’s Kapayan assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang and sev-
eral Penampang Pakatan leaders that flood aid did not reach
many of those affected last year.
“I sympathise with their predicament. Hence, among my
aspirations for the Penampang people in the 15th General
Election is to ensure the service to them and post-flood assis-
tance could be implemented fairly and transparently,” he
said.
Benedick hopes to establish a special action and high-
impact project implementation monitoring committee for
Penampang if they decide to give him their votes this time
around. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan
had said last month that the State Government was doing its
best to complete the ongoing Penampang and Putatan flood
mitigation projects in order to address the situation in the
two neighbouring districts.
However, the projects could only be completed in six
years’ time, urging families residing in flood-prone areas to
relocate to other places during heavy rain.
Benedick is in a four-way fight for the Penampang seat
against incumbent Datuk Darell Leiking, who is Parti
Warisan deputy president, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah candi-
date Kenny Chua and independent Richard Jimmy.
