QUESTION 1 - CHAPTER 3

Figure 1
A thin-walled tube with diameter of 25 mm and length of 20 m is used to carry exhaust gas from
a smoke stack to the laboratory in a nearby building for analysis. The gas enters the tube at 200°C
and with a velocity of 8.5 m/s. Assume the tube wall is maintained at a temperature of 30 °C and
the thermophysical properties of the exhaust gas are similar with air.

a) Calculate the convective heat transfer coefficient, hL (in W/m2.K) and heat-transfer rate, q
(in W) for the exhaust gas flowing inside the tube. (Assume the outlet temperature of the
exhaust gas is 90°C)
(12 Marks)

b) Determine the heat transfer rate, q (in W) for the air flowing outside the tube if cool winds
at a temperature of 16 °C blows directly across the tube at a velocity of 5 m/s.
(10 Marks)

c) Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient U (in W/m2.K).

QUESTION 2 - CHAPTER 3 & 4

Company X has produced a 15 cm width and 20 cm high of printed circuit board that has electronic
components on one side as shown in Figure 2, where δ = 150 mm. Assuming the surface
temperature of the board is 50 °C and the board is placed in a room at 25 °C. The back side of the
board is heavily insulated, while front surface is coated with black chrome, which has an
emissivity of 0.8.

Figure 2

d) Determine the combined natural convection and radiation heat transfer rate, q (in SI unit) if
the board is placed vertically. Given g = 9.806 m/s2.
[18 Marks]

e) Similar type of circuit board as above is used except that the board is placed horizontally
with hot surface facing upwards. Calculate the required area, A (m2) of the circuit board if
the heat transfer-rate, q for radiation and natural convection is increased by 70 % from q
obtained in (a). Note: Use the same L as above to calculate hc.

QUESTION 3 - CHAPTER 5

A counterflow double-pipe heat exchanger is used to heat up water from 30 oC to 80 oC flowing

at 100 kg/min, with the specific heat for water is 4.18 kJ/kg.oC . The hot fluid used for the system
is hot oil with the specific heat of 1.9 kJ/kg.oC. It is known that the oil enters the heat exchanger
at 130 oC and leaves at 75 oC. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 320 W/m2.oC.

a) Determine the total heat transfer involve in this system and estimate the area required for
the heat exchanger.
(10 Marks)

b) If the type of heat exchanger are changed to shell and tube, 1-2 exchanger, determine which
heat exchanger will consume bigger spacing area for installation. Justify your answer in a
form of calculation for estimating the size of heat exchanger.
(15 Marks)

QUESTION 4 - CHAPTER 5

As an engineer, you have been assigned by your boss to design a counter current shell and tube
heat exchanger to heat up the water that flow at 36000 kg/s for reaction process. The inlet and
outlet temperature of water are 22 °C and 49 °C, respectively.

(a) Draw the temperature profile of the system.

[5 Marks]

(b) Your boss suggested two types of shell and tube heat exchanger that can be installed, either
1-2 heat exchanger or 2-4 heat exchanger. Suggest which type of shell and tube heat
exchanger that is more effective based on the calculation of the area required. Given the
overall heat transfer coefficient, Uo is 35 kW and the hot fluid flowing through the heat
exchanger is under pressure in which water enter at 120 °C and leave at 52 °C.
