Definition and objectives of

occupational safety

Work safety; These are scientific and

systematic studies carried out in order to be
protected from the dangers that may occur
during the execution of the works in the
workplace, from conditions that may harm
health, and to provide a more comfortable
working environment.

1
Definition and objectives of
occupational safety

These dangers can be physical, psychological

and sociological.
Occupational safety as a concept; It describes
the whole of the technical rules regarding the
obligations imposed on the employer regarding
the elimination or reduction of the hazards faced
by the employees during the performance of the
work.

Definition and objectives of
occupational safety
Personal characteristics
Personal characteristics depend, on the one
hand, on human heredity, on the other hand,
on factors such as nutrition, education,
lifestyle.
The characteristics of people such as food
storage, cooking, cleaning habits, age, breed
and race are among the factors affecting
health.

6
An unacceptable situation
A recent ILO report estimated that 2 million
occupational fatalities occur across the world every
year (ILO, 2003b), the highest proportions of these
deaths being caused by work-related cancers,
circulatory and cerebrovascular diseases, and some
communicable diseases. The overall annual rate of
occupational accidents, fatal and non-fatal, is
estimated at 270 million.

7
160 million workers suffer from work-related
diseases and about two-thirds of those are away
from work for four working days or longer as a
result. After work-related cancers, circulatory
diseases and certain communicable diseases,
accidental occupational injuries are the fourth main
cause of work related fatalities.

9
Recent data from the ILO and from the
World Health Organization (WHO) indicate
that overall occupational accident and
disease rates are slowly declining in most
industrialized countries.

11
According to the European Statistics on
Accidents at Work (ESAW), every year in the
European Union (EU) before the enlargements
of 2004 and 2007 about 5,000 workers were
killed in accidents at work and about 5 million
workers were victims of accidents at work
leading to more than three days’ absence from
work.

12
FACTORS AFFECTING HUMAN
HEALTH
Worldwide, every 15 seconds, 153
workers have a work-related accident, and
every 15 seconds a worker dies as a result
of a work-related accident or illness.
Therefore, every day 6,300 people die as
a result of work accidents or occupational
diseases, which means that more than 2.3
million people die every year.

13
In India and China, the rates of
occupational fatalities and accidents are
similar at, respectively, 10.4 and 10.5 per
100,000 for fatalities, 8,700 and 8,028 for
accidents.

14
In sub-Saharan Africa, the fatality rate per 100,000 workers is
21 and the accident rate 16,000. This means that each year
54,000 workers die and 42 million work-related accidents
take place that cause at least three days’ absence from work.

15
• In Latin America and the Caribbean, about
30,000 fatalities occur each year and 22.6
million occupational accidents cause at
least three days’ absence from work.

16
• In The economic costs of these injuries and deaths are
colossal, at the enterprise, national and global levels.
Taking into account compensation, lost working time,
interruption of production, training and retraining,
medical expenses, and so on, estimates of these losses
are routinely put at roughly 4 per cent of global GNP
(Gross National Prodcut)every year, and possibly much
more.

17
America and the Caribbean, about 30,000 fatalities
occur each year and 22.6 million occupational accidents
cause at least three days’ absence from work.

Workplace Accidents

Causes of Occupational Accidents:

Nature and Social Structure: It is the first factor that causes the
accident. Weaknesses of man against nature, lack of education,
negativities arising from his social environment constitute the first link of
the chain of accidents.

Personal Flaws: These are the excuses of a person such as

carelessness, indifference, selfishness, irresponsibility, and
nervousness. Personal defect is caused by factors of nature and social
structure.

20
Unsafe Behavior and Conditions: These consist of various unsafe acts and various characteristics
of an unsafe work environment.
Accident: It is a damaging event caused by unsafe acts and conditions.
Injury: It is the last link in the chain of accidents. The injury occurs as a result of an accident that

Prevention of Work Accidents

The most effective way to be protected from occupational accidents is to establish

a working order in accordance with the principles of occupational safety in the
workplace.

Accordingly, the necessary work areas to be implemented are as follows;

Engineering services education

The most important part of occupational safety services is the
detection of hazards.
The aim is to detect an accident before it happens.
The purpose of education is to help people gain positive
behaviors and help them develop.
