ABSTRACT

Practical training is a mandatory, systematic program that helps

apprentices achieve their professional goals in the future by developing their
skills and expanding their knowledge of the real world. All of the knowledge
and experience gained as a network engineer during this internship are
summarized in this report. At Mesiniaga Berhad, the 20-week industrial
training period began on May 8, 2022, and ended on September 23, 2022. I
had the chance to gain real-world experience working in an office with a
diverse group of people throughout this training.

The corporate profile and the tasks assigned during the industrial
training will be discussed in greater detail in this report. We'll go over the
assigned tasks in greater detail.By the end of this industrial industry, industrial
training had achieved its objectives. I will be able to put the theoretical
knowledge I learned at university to use in the training environment. They will
also get real-world experience in a working environment related to their field
of work, hone their skills in the areas where they excel during this industrial
training, learn new things at work, and gain knowledge they didn't get at
university. This will help them get familiar with the working world for their
future careers. They will also improve and develop soft skills like
communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, work ethic.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of Industrial Training

An industrial training placement is a work experience that contributes to

professional development before graduation. In essence, university students
must participate in training placement in order to meet graduation
requirements. The industrial training placement (INT 40110) at Kolej Universiti
Poly-Tech Mara in Kuala Lumpur is part of the curriculum for the Bachelor of
Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security. It takes 20 weeks to
complete 10 credit hours.Throughout the internship, students are also
obligated to carry out the tasks given to them by the company and the
institution.

Students learn social, teamwork, professionalism, time management,

and leadership skills through industrial training. Additionally, students benefit
from this training because it can be included on their resumes. As recent
graduates with no prior work experience, it may assist students in finding
employment.

The five-month industrial training program will start on May 8, 2022,

and it will end on September 23, 2022 (20 weeks). All students were required
to apply for the internship independently, with the coordinator's assistance.
Due to COVID-19, the internship application was submitted online. The
necessary documents were sent via email to the selected company.

7
2.0 OBJECTIVES

2.1 Objectives of Industrial Training

2.1.1 Collaboration and solid relationships with coworkers

The students will work with a variety of workers in one company. For
instance, there are various religions and races. As a result, in addition to
challenging the job through consultation and assistance from other employees,
the intercommunication that is created by students and employees can uplift
the mood. As a result, employees' relationships are emphasized because they
can foster teamwork and bonding, as well as positive relationships with
coworkers.

2.1.2 Providing Students with Real-World Jobs

Students who are placed in the public or private sectors will have the
opportunity to learn about a real job for 20 weeks, which will be very different
from the classroom environment. In addition, students will be confronted with
numerous unfamiliar difficulties and difficulties. This situation is representative
of the actual working environment. As a result, this training will not only help
students mature, but it will also equip them with the skills and knowledge
necessary to lead and help them find work in the future.

2.1.3 Trust, action, and self-assurance

Additionally, students learn moral values through industry training.

Honesty, responsibility for their actions and confidence in making decisions
are among the properties that can be developed maintaining the company's
confidentiality to teach a student trustworthiness and responsibility. Therefore,
in order to guarantee that the firm's confidentiality continues to be an essential
component of its success, students should be encouraged to be honest with
themselves.

8
2.2 Objectives of report

In accordance with the KUPTM's standards, each student is required to

prepare a report or complete assignments. Each student is required to write a
report on the activities carried out in the training industry. Here, students are
expected to keep track of everything they did or saw during their industrial
training. The report aims, among other things, to teach students how to write
comprehensive reports that meet industry requirements and adhere to
established guidelines. Additionally, this report will serve as evidence of the
students' internship locations. In addition, this report can help students learn
how to prepare a report for a higher level exam and cultivate confidence in
students' communication and interaction with employers in order to obtain
industry-related information.

4.0 DETAIL OF EXPERIENCE

4.1 Introduction

This chapter will go over the tasks that the company gave me during
my internship. I was given a job in the ITSS and Staging Department
throughout my internship. My assignment, though, is to monitor Perkeso's
network and set up routers for TNB. So, I completed a variety of jobs
throughout my internship, and I also picked up and learnt a lot of new
knowledge.

The IT Support & Services Division (ITSS) was formed in March 2020
which was previously known as the Service Delivery Division (SDD) which
was also formed in February 2014 as a result of the restructuring of the entire
company at the end of 2013 to provide services on the implementation of post
support, IT Managed Services and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

The IT Support & Services Division (ITSS) is a unit responsible for

taking care of and placing students in the company or on site who need
support or help in carrying out the projects received. This unit will place
students according to the places that have support requests in IT services.
There are students placed in one place only and there are also students
placed on site who have requests for support or assistance in IT services or in
carrying out work or projects.

Students are given the task of preparing new technology, have been
given the responsibility to help carry out the project in terms of preparation
and help in providing IT services or any work to the project department.
Students who are given this task are supervised by a project team worker who
will supervise the students and give guidance to the students. Students who
carry out industrial training will be assisted and work with Mesiniaga Berhad
staff who are based in the company.

22
4.2 Duties and Tasks

4.2.1 Monitoring Perkeso MyCSC Ticketing System

Figure 4.1 MyCSC Ticketing System

The support must manage Perkeso's enquiries by email, telephone or

live chat while comprehending the demands of the customers and promptly
responding to them with appropriate information. In order to provide help,
good interpersonal skills were used together with critical thinking and
problem-solving abilities.
Support must make sure that all Perkeso’s reported tickets, particularly
those pertaining to HR2U and Network issues, are updated on a daily basis
before determining how to address the issue. Any method agreed upon
between the customer and support team, including face-to-face or remote
communication, can be used for the response. If a problem is difficult to
resolve, it will be escalated to an industrial supervisor who will provide
guidance on what modifications to implement or what should be eliminated in
order to maintain a positive working relationship with the client.

23
4.2.2 Support Resident Engineer – RE

Figure 4.2 Perkeso’s Office

Engineers who live there operate the Perkeso network throughout

Malaysia's peninsula and east. Support must regularly assist and support RE,
whether in person or remotely by addressing end user difficulties. Support can
also allow the RE to remotely access the support’s PC or laptop to assist with
their jobs. Support employees must visit to Perkeso Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya,
Wisma Klang, or Wisma Kuala Lumpur to help RE with network setup,
network configuration, and server maintenance. Aside from visiting other
Perkeso, at Menara Perkeso, support employees also have to assist with
network Preventive Maintenance (PM), network troubleshooting and change
hardware such switch or Access Point (AP). Support must also visit Mesiniaga
Berhad Headquarters to assist with setting any related devices for training at
Mesiniaga.

24
4.2.3 PERKESO Video Conference – VC Project

Figure 4.3 Perkeso’s Meeting Hall

System analyst infrastructure sends out a weekly email reminder about

the scheduled meetings. They would inform regarding the venue, date, time
and the method of joining the meetings or events. Support is required to set
up the hardware for meetings, such as Perkeso board meetings or online
gatherings, and to assist the meeting secretary or event coordinator in setting
up the meeting room or hall site. Support played a limited role in attending
the conference to ensure a successful one, but they were only called upon
when necessary. Besides setting up the meetings and events, there is also
Preventive Maintenance that needed to be done once every 3 months. The
Preventive Maintenance is to check the condition of the hardware and
network of the devices used for the video conference.

25
4.2.4 Learning for TNB MPLS Project

Figure 4.4 Example of Sub-rack Diagram

Here I learned the sketch map for TNB MPLS project given by my co
worker, Tuah. I needed to identify the distance from the project site to another
project site to determine the type of cable used.I also learn about the sub-rack
diagram issued by the project manager. By viewing the diagram, it shows how
to install based on the diagram set according to the project location. It also
prevent us from making mistakes by viewing the diagram. Ensure that the
SFP used is in accordance with the specifications and conditions required
based on the distance found in the map sketch. Make slides to make it easier
for the cabling team to install the cable in the correct port hole as specified in
the configuration. We also have to send email slides, pictures, proof of
delivery to the engineer at the project site. Also, receive calls and answers
questions if there is a problem or confusion with the cabling team.

26
4.2.5 Configuring Routers

Figure 4.5 Configuring Routers

The first thing was I learned how to configure the router. It’s a long
process since before configuring you have to upgrade the router first because
the CISCO gave all of it in old version. So, we need to upgrade its Rommon
and IOS. The process of upgrading will took like 2 hours each router. We
need to ensure that the wires are installed correctly so that no short circuit
occurs. Using the Eggshell and putty application to set the code into the router
for upgrading and configuring. All the command are given by my co worker as
it was a very long command. Receive MOP Steps to avoid making mistakes in
configuration. We also carry out packaging and deliver it to the location where
the router will be used. This is a project with TNB so it will be delivered to all
TNB sites.

27
4.3 Problems and Difficulties

Several challenges have arisen during my internship program, making

it difficult for me to complete my tasks. The lack of confidence and
interpersonal communication skills is the first issue that arises during the
internship. Even though I am a very bubbly, outspoken, and extrovert type of
person, I still have this issue where I find it difficult to be open to new people.
It would take more than one month for me to break down my barrier, reveal
my true self, and demonstrate my true potential and confidence. People have
always thought of me as a passive worker, even though I am simply battling
with my inner self to adapt to my new surroundings.

There are a few challenges I faced during my internship. One of the

difficulties that I have encountered is that there is lack of availability of
colleagues to share their knowledge and also to guide me as a newbie. The
first day I entered to the company, my manager was on leave and there was
no one in my department to explain to me about my job scope as well as
briefing of the company and department. They only assigned another intern
who were going to end his internship next few weeks to assist and briefly
explain her jobs that will be handled to me. I have to pick up everything
quickly and to figure out things by myself as the staff members are usually not
available. It is different from the university where the lecturers give you the
guidelines so you would know what you need to do, and how you should do I

A common intern problem is asking questions. My biggest hesitation

lies in asking questions. What if asking questions will create an impression
that I don’t know anything? So many thoughts roaming through my mind. I’m
not even sure which of my colleagues will help me or will they feel disturbed. I
feel hesitant in interrupting them. I might land a really good internship but
upon starting I realize that the work environment is excessively grave and
professional. In such an environment, I find it difficult to ask questions for the
fear of being judged.

28
5.0 RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION

5.1 Introduction

This chapter will focus on the benefits obtained of the industrial training
for 6 months for the students that take the Engineering course and the
conclusion of the overall experience during the internship under Mesiniaga
Berhad and Perkeso

Industrial training is an approach that has been taken by the University

to increase technical knowledge and provide experience in the working
environment. From the experience and observation of students throughout
this period of industrial training, students can conclude that industrial training
is not only a place to train oneself for the real world of work but can educate
students to comply with all the rules set. In addition, this industrial training is
also one of the good learning methods to add to existing knowledge.

The benefits of the industrial training are numerous. One of them is the
capacity to put the knowledge acquired through study into practise. Most of
the time, students were only taught theories in school, but the assignments
they were given at work offered them a real understanding of interpersonal
skills and how network solutions operate in businesses. Working with
individuals in person rather than remotely is undoubtedly more advantageous
because it makes it easier to connect with them, comprehend their problems,
and offer solutions.

29
5.2 Recommendation

As a recommendation, I'd suggest that the new student who wishes to

begin the internship apply at Mesiniaga Berhad because they can learn a lot
and experience a lot there. Information technology, finance, and many other
disciplines have a lot of current courses that we take in university that they
can be applicable to.

Additionally, Mesiniaga Berhad frequently provides interns the

opportunity to continue working there after their internship has ended. Only
the students who will conclude their semester following an internship will
receive an offer from Mesiniaga, nevertheless. As a result, students are no
longer required to worry or look for work. The student's future will be made
easier by this.

Students undergoing industrial training must always accept

assignments that will be given by their supervisors or employees in the
organization better. Students need to be punctual by complying with existing
rules and work ethics when undergoing industrial training in the organization.
Industrial training is effective learning for university students by giving
students exposure to situations in the world of work as well as experience
during industrial training before students enter the real world of work.

30
5.3 Conclusion

In conclusion, industrial training is a significant step for higher

education institutions in exposing students to the work of real-world experts.
Without a doubt, students may learn new ideas, techniques, and shortcuts in
the classroom that are not included in the textbook. Soft skills like
interpersonal skills are valuable to learn when getting practical training. One
cannot operate alone in a professional setting and rely on others to function
as a team. The good news is that Mesiniaga Berhad and Perkeso both offer
all the benefits. I am confident that these traits will support me in my work
while enhancing KUPTM's professionalism and reputation.

In addition, as a student studying in computer engineering with a major

on networks, I discovered that it was challenging to concentrate solely in our
areas of interest while avoiding topics unrelated to networks. People in society
have a stigma that those who study computer related courses are capable of
handling any computer-related issues. Although it is prejudiced, it is
nevertheless useful when seeking knowledge. A degree gives us a foundation
that does not completely hide the wider picture of the world, but it does assist
us as we work to pursue the expertise, we would hope to follow in the future
by overcoming challenges that serve as a stepping stone to a brighter
tomorrow

Moreover, I think the student benefited greatly from the assignment

that was given to them. It provides a multitasking value with critical thinking
accuracy to not only focus on what we already know, but also strive for more
knowledge that may be useful to other people as well.

At the conclusion of this industrial industry, the objectives of industrial

training were achieved. I will be able to apply the theoretical knowledge I
learned in school to the training environment, get practical experience in a
workplace related to my field of work, hone my skills in those areas where I
excel during this industrial training, learn new things at work, and pick up
knowledge that I couldn't have learned in school, all of which will help me
better prepare for and advance in my future careers.
