1. Purpose
This method statement of construction of Stone Columns is proposed for Central Reservoir, Dammam, KSA. It
is prepared on the basis of data collected from the site as per soil condition of current site and gives an indication
of our general approach to the construction and management of the project.
In this method statement, we state our intentions for managing and supporting the project and the specific
approach that will be taken for certain key aspects. The main content includes the requirements, materials,
equipment and HSE regulations for works.
2. Scope
This document outlines the methods, required materials, equipment and quality control standards to be
performed in all operations during Stone Column construction works for Central Reservoir, specifically for two
water storage Tanks, KSA.
Stone Column extends the range of soils which can be improved by vibratory techniques, including cohesive soils.
Reinforcement of the soil with compacted granular columns or “stone columns” is accomplished by the top-feed
method. Stone columns are cylindrical columns made below ground level which is comprised of granular material
of large sizes varying from 20 to 100 mm and the small size (<20mm) content less than 10%. A hole is made in
the soft deposit by different techniques and then filled with stones in layers and compacted to form the complete
column. When a structure is placed over the area treated by stone columns, majority of the load could be borne
by stone columns. In this case, the diameter of stone column is 900 mm.
As a way forward, the testing method as indicated and is expected to demonstrate the following:
Settlement: over 25 years

Post-hydrotest
Maximum allowable settlement for Tank at center is 110mm
Maximum settlement for Tank edge is 50mm
Maximum differential settlement along ring beam is 13mm over 10m distance
Load is 260 kPa

3. Project Overview
The project is located in Al Khobar, Eastern Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and consists of two steel tank each
50m diameter, height 23.7m in addition to other facilities.

3.1. Subsurface formation

The subsurface soil information as provided by Al Khorayef consists of the following:
1) Fill layer consists of rubbish, silts, sands and gravel (this shall be cleaned by
MC)
2) Loose to medium Poorly graded SAND
3) Fractured limestone
4) Medium dense to dense poorly graded SAND
5) Hard Elastic Silt

In addition to the boreholes, Pre-CPT testing will be performed to confirm soil conditions at each Tank. This pre-
CPT will be done using crawler CPT machine model 2021 as shown below.

According to the soil condition and acceptance criteria, Stone Column would be the optimal improvement
technique in this area to enhance the soil stiffness thus to increase bearing capacity, reduce the post construction
settlement and reduce the potential of liquefaction (if any)
3.2. Ground Water Condition

As per the soil investigation report, the ground water condition is at around 5m below existing ground level.

5. Work Procedure
The sequence for stone column works shall be found below.
5.1. Site Survey and Temporary Bench Marks

The main contractor shall establish the benchmarks at convenient locations well clear of the working area and
protected to allow for aggregate stockpile and movement of loader to and from the stockpile. Surveying will be
done by GPS.
5.2. Setting out of Column Locations

Locations for Stone columns shall be set out in accordance with shop drawings prepared by GH and approved by
consultant. Stone columns are arranged so as to accommodate varying combinations of load and foundation
configuration.
Steel pegs approx. 80 cm long shall be used to mark a Probe location and shall carry a tag identifying the Probe
number at enough intervals. Tolerance for coordinates will be not more than 200 mm.
5.3. Water Supply System

As water is required throughout the process of vibro replacement wet top feed method, a water source within
close distance to the working area is utilized. The establishment and operation of a temporary water supply to
service the vibro works shall be nearby water source or well point system or deep well system. The water is
pumped into a storage tank first then goes back to the ground through water jetting (tubes attached to the
vibrator). No foreign matter is added to the water thus ensuring “no contamination” of the water.
5.4. Vibro-Replacement Techniques-Wet Method

For this project, GH will apply wet method
The essential equipment for this process is a vibrator – a long heavy tube enclosing eccentric weights driven by
an electric motor. The vibrator is connected to a source of electric power and a high-pressure pump with
following capacity Q=120 M3/hour. Extension tubes are added as necessary and the whole assembly is
suspended from a crane.
With the electric power and water supply switched on, the vibrator is lowered into the ground. The combination
of vibration and high-pressure water jetting causes liquefaction of the soils surrounding the vibrator that assists
in penetration.
Following penetration of the vibrator and its withdrawal after reaching the required depth the resulting cavity is
filled with coarse-grained materials (stone). This supply of material is itself in turn compacted. A stone column is
thus formed in which the stone is laterally pressed into the soil. The stone column and the in-situ soil form an
integrated system having low compressibility and high shear strength. The excess pore water can readily dissipate
through the stone columns that act simultaneously as drains. For this reason, settlement occurs faster than
normal in cohesive soils.
An indication of the effectiveness of the treatment is the quantity of backfill material used. Other control
procedures are available, such as load or penetration tests.
5.5. Working Platform Layer (WPL)

Working Platform layer will be provided by main contractor, safe and stable for work. WPL shall be above ground
water level: min. 1 m for the wet method. However, if ground water table is far from working platform level
and the ground is stable, then no need WPL.
5.6. Load Transfer Platform (LTP)

After installing the stone columns, cleaning for the top of columns and roller compaction shall be done for the
column’s heads, then, a minimum of 50 cm layer shall be provided on top of stone columns, filled with
engineering fill and compacted into two layers compacted up to 95% MDD (maximum dry density) before placing
the ring beam foundation. A Cross section for the LTP with the stone columns will be provided in design report.
6. Operation Condition

6.2. Machinery, Equipment and tools

6.3. Material
The material shall be suitable for the ground conditions for the ground conditions in which the stone columns
are formed and have no adverse effect on other work on the site. Grading shall be a nominal single-size material
within the range of 20mm-100mm and small size (<20mm) content less than 10%.

7.2. Project/Site Engineer

 Provide the necessary information (Method Statement & Risk Assessment briefing), material, equipment,
and machinery to his team to carry out the job.
 Ensure all related approvals and NOCs are provided to the site supervisor.
 Preparation of cross section as per the existing site condition and providing a copy to site supervisor.
 Ensuring Work execution is being carried out as per project specifications and approved method of
statement.
7.3. The Site Surveyor

 Execute daily survey field tasks according to the procedures of the Survey Department.
 Perform setting-out tasks and as-built survey tasks as assigned by the Chief Surveyor.
 Prepare survey data and sketches in the proper format for transfer/ handover of information.
 Ensure that the workers under his command fully understand the procedures and hazards involved in the
job.
7.4. The Supervisor

 Ensure that the workers under his command fully understand the procedures and hazards involved in the
job.
 Making regular checkups ensuring all machinery and equipment related to the activity are working
properly.
 Regularly checking of the operation and ensure the work conditions are safe.
 Ensure adequate cool drinking water, toilets, rest areas are available for workers at site.
7.5. The QA/QC Engineer

 Conduct inspections and monitor the required tests as per the relevant Method Statement and ITP.
 Ensure that personnel are fully aware of the quality requirements relevant to their discipline and work.
 Regularly pay site visits to ensure that all the procedures in the Method Statement and ITP are
implemented.

 Ensure that all necessary r190rds such as Inspection Requests and calibration records for survey
instruments are in-place prior to commencement of work.
 Ensure that properly documented quality records are maintained as per established Method Statement,
ITP.
 Determine and report any non-conformance to the QC Manager and the process owner.
7.6. The Safety Officer

 Ensure that all construction team members are aware of the requirements of PSSP & Risk Assessment for
the task.
 Provide the required HSE induction& Risk Assessment briefing.
 Regularly pay site visits to ensure that safety is being exercised at site as per requirement.
 Report to the Construction Manager or his designers any infraction of safety procedures.
 Promptly report accidents, incidents and near misses to HSE Manager.
 Ensure suitable provision of drinking water, toilets, rest areas and first aid.
 Stop all unsafe work activities
8. Quality Control by Testing

8.1. Post-Treatment Testing by Zone Load Test (ZLT)
Two (2) Zone Load Tests will be performed, one in each tank to reflect the overall effect of ground replacement
solutions. Zone Load Test may be performed on a group of stone columns to verify the bearing capacity of
composite of stone columns and its surrounding area. Zone load test requires a big set up and is performed on a
selected area of ground treated by stone columns. A reinforced concrete bearing plate of 3.0×3.0m shall be used
and loaded up to one time of the required bearing capacity.
8.2. Post-Treatment Testing by Plate Load Test (PLT)

Plate Load Tests shall be performed for quality control purposes on stone columns selected by the Client or his
representative. In this test a steel plate with 0.76m Dia. shall be loaded up to 3 times design bearing pressure.
For this ground improvement scope, total 12 PLT tests are proposed.
8.3. Post-Treatment Testing by Cone penetration test (CPT)

CPT shall be performed for quality control purposes on stone columns selected by the Client or his representative.
Five (5) post-CPT in each tank will be performed for liquefaction check.
