MINI-TASK #1: PHET SIMULATION TAB #1: COLOR VISION

DIRECTIONS:
1. On your internet browser, type “PhET Simulation: Color Vision” or click on this link: .
2. Select the “Single Bulb” option. You will be able to see a person, the bulb color, and the
color filter.
3. Select the white bulb. It is found beside of the yellow bulb.
4. Click the red button on the flashlight. It should produce a white light already.
5. Adjust the filter color to red. Make sure to turn on the filter color. The color observed by
the person is now color red.
6. Now, try to change the solid beam to individual photons. This option is found under the
flashlight.
7. Answer the questions:
• Why are the photons released by the flashlight different?
• How does the color filter affect our observation of the light?
8. After answering the questions, select the yellow bulb beside the white bulb.
9. Adjust the color of the light bulb to yellow and the color filter to red. Make sure that these
two options are turned on. Observe what happens.
10. Answer the question:
• What is the reason why we cannot observe colors if the colors of the light bulb and
color filter different from one another?
11. Now, adjust the color filter to yellow. Observe what happens.
12. Answer the questions:
• What is the reason why we can observe colors if the colors of the light bulb and color
filter are the same?
• As human beings, how can we observe colors?
13. After answering the questions, click on the home option. Now, click on the “RGB Bulbs.”
14. You are now going to mix colors based on the available colors of the light bulbs.
15. Complete the table that will be provided below. On Table #1, you are going to use only
half the amount of the light bulbs. To attain the half the amount of the light bulbs, adjust
the arrow of the light bulb to the middle.
16. On table #2, you will be using the maximum amount of the light bulbs. To attain the
maximum amount of the light bulbs, adjust the arrow of the light bulb to the other end.
17. Answer the guide questions in three to five sentences only.
18. Save and send the file in PDF. Follow the file name format MT#1(Group #).

ANSWER SHEET:
I. GUIDE QUESTIONS – SINGLE BULB
1. Why are the photons released by the flashlight different?
2. How does the color filter affect our observation of the light?
3. What is the reason why we cannot observe colors if the colors of the light bulb and color
filter different from one another?
4. What is the reason why we can observe colors if the colors of the light bulb and color filter
are the same?
5. As human beings, how can we observe colors?
YOUR ANSWERS:
1. The flashlight emits white light which is a combination of different lights and emits different
colored photons.
2. The filter blocks all other color of photons but red and so only the red photons reach our
eyes.
3. Because the filter blocks out all color of photons but red and the color of the light is not red
but yellow.
4. Because the filter does not block the color of photons that it has so if the filter was yellow
yellow light would pass through.
5. When photons reach our eyes we see it as light.
