1. Describe the characteristics of critical care nursing in the Philippines.


 There are characteristic of critical care nursing in the Philippines which is based on a
scientific body of knowledge and incorporates the professional competencies specific to
critical care nursing practice and is focused on restorative, curative, rehabilitative,
maintainable, or palliative care, based on identified patient’s need. It is also complex,
challenging area of nursing practice. And it is also continuously transform due to changes in
the needs of patients/demands of the time

2. What are functions the organization of CCN in the Philippines, USA and the World Federation of
Critical Care Nurses?
 The functions of CNN in the Philippines, USA, and the World Federation of Critical Care
Nurses are to connect critical care nursing associations and nurses around the world in order
to strengthen the influence and contribution of critical care nurses to health care globally, as
well as to be a collective voice and advocate for critical care nurses and patients on a global
scale.

3. What is the philosophy of critical care? Then select 1 and explain.


A. Critical care nursing reflects a holistic approach in caring of patients. It places great emphasis on
caring the bio-psycho-social-spiritual nature of human beings and their responses to illnesses
rather than the disease process.

B. The caring focus includes preventive care, risk factor modification and education to decrease
future patient admission to acute care facilities.
 Caring does not only focus on giving assistance, but rather modifies the risk factors and also
educates the patient so that in the near future, the admissions will not be repeated and will
reduced, especially in acute facilities.
C. In collaboration with other health care team members, critical care nurses provide high level of
patient care which includes 3 patient and family education, health promotion and rehabilitation.
D. . At the forefront of critical care science and technology, critical care nurses maintain
professional competence based on a broad base of knowledge and experience through
continuous education and evidence-based research.

4. Compare the three levels of care provision in the critical care.


 There are three levels of care provision in the critical care which are the Level 1, Level 2, and
Level 3. In comparison of these three. First, level 1 should be capable of providing immediate
resuscitation for the critically ill and short term cardio-respiratory support because the
patients are of deterioration and must be capable of providing mechanical ventilation and
simple invasive cardiovascular monitoring. While in level 2 Should be capable of providing a
high standard of general critical care for patients who are stepping down from higher levels
of care or requiring single organ support/support post-operative. And Has a designated
medical director with appropriate intensive care qualification and a duty specialist available
exclusively to the unit at all times. Lastly, level 3 Is a tertiary referral unit, capable of
managing all aspects of critical care medicine (This does not only include the management of
patients requiring advanced respiratory support but also patients with multi-organ failure).

5. What are the 11 standards of Practice in CCN? Select 3 standards and explain briefly.
1) The critical care nurse functions in accordance with legislation, common laws, organizational
regulations and by-laws, which affect nursing practice.
2) The critical care nurse provides care to meet individual patient needs on a 24-hour basis.
3) The critical care nurse practices current critical care nursing competently.
4) The critical care nurse delivers nursing care in a way that can be ethically justified.
5) The critical care nurse demonstrates accountability for his/her professional judgment and
actions.

6) The critical care nurse creates and maintains an environment which promotes safety and
security of patients, visitors and staff.
 Patients, visitors, and staff all feel secure and at ease in a safe environment.
Additionally, it can help the patient’s health improve and avoid other complications.

7) The critical care nurse masters the use of all essential equipment, available services and supplies
for immediate care of patients.

8) The critical care nurse protects the patients from developing environmental induced
infection.
 It is because infection can worsen their condition and can cause sudden death.

9) The critical care nurse utilizes the nursing process in an explicit systematic manner to achieve
the goals of care.

10) The critical care nurse carries out health education for promotion and maintenance of health.
 A patient's health is improved by health education by altering their perspective on the
illness or ailment they are experiencing. The nurse should also mention motivating
factors that might help the patient recovery.

11) The critical care nurse acts to enhance the professional development of self and others.

 The critical care nurse must be knowledgeable about the various life-supporting devices
available in the hospital. Critical care nurses should also attend seminars and training to
refresh and update their ideas, knowledge, and skills in caring for critically ill patients in
the hospital.
