1950s The Soviet, launched a satellite called Sputnik, which

panicked the Americans.

1958 The Advanced Research Projects Agency was set up.

1962 The ARPA Network or ARPAnet was created.
1972 Developments resulted in data being passed between
computers rather than over telephone wires.

1983 ARPAnet allowed the National Science Foundation

Network (NSFNET) to use part of its network.

1985 Engineers connected computers across IT departments

in US universities.

1989 Tim Berners –Lee created Hypertext Transfer Protocol

(http) and the internet was born.

1995 The net was available to the public in their homes.
