SECTION 035416 CEMENT BASE AND UNDERLAYMENT (INC. SCREED)

1.1 GENERAL

This section covers specification of all plant, labor, equipment, appliances and
materials and in performing all works in connection with the installation of cement
screed floor finish including bases, skirting and wainscots, in strict accordance with
applicable drawings, reference to the Bills of Quantities and the contract documents
in general. Materials and methods not specifically described but required, for proper
fabrication and installation of floor screeding, is to be provided by the Contractor
subject to approval, at no claim for additional cost or time.

1.2 STANDARDS

a. Ordinary Portland cement conforming to ASTM, C-150 Type-1.

b. Sand to conform to ASTM C-33.

c. Water to be clear, clean and potable and as described in "Plain and


Reinforced Concrete."

or equivalent proposed by the Contractor subject to approval.

1.3 PERFORMANCE

a. The Contractor is to deliver material to the job site in original packing with
labels intact and legible at time of use. If any material is delivered loose, it is
to be stored as directed.

b. All materials to be stored under cover to prevent damage and contamination,


with only the specified materials to be stored at the job site.

c. Environmental Conditions:

i. The Contractor is not to apply cement screeding, when temperature


is below 5oC. They are to maintain temperature of concrete topping
at or above 13oC for at-least first 72 hours.

ii. The Contractor is not to undertake work if area of application is


exposed to dry hot winds.

d. Proportioning and Mixing

i. Measurement of materials by volume is to be of known capacity to


maintain consistent proportions. No lumpy or cracked material is to
be used. Mixing equipment, boxes and tools are to be clean. Material
is to be proportioned as specified or as directed. Mixing is to be
continuous until ingredients are evenly distributed.

ii. Only limited water is to be used for proper workability. Water cement
ratio is not to exceed 0.45. Mix is to be consumed within thirty

minutes of mixing. Re-tempering is not to be permitted. Mix which
has begun to stiffen is to be discarded.

iii. Mix ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed by mechanical mixer.

iv. Mix for 50mm or thicker cement screed finish is to be 1 part cement
and 4 parts sand.

e. The Contractor is to apply the mix over required areas in alternate strips or
bays not exceeding 25 Sq. M, to be laid to level or fall as shown or directed.
UPVC crack inducer to screed depth is to be inserted at panel control joints.

f.. Leveling is to be carried out immediately after placing, spreading and


vibration is complete.

g. The Contractor is to protect materials of this section before, during, and after
installation and protect installed work and materials of other trades.
Screeded floor is to be kept free of traffic for 7 days.

h. In the event of damage, the Contractor is to immediately make repairs and


replacements to approval, at no claim for additional cost or time.

2.0 MATERIALS

1. Cement Screed

a. 1 part Ordinary Portland cement.

b. 4 parts sand which is to be clean, sharp, angular, free from alkali, silt or
organic matter.

c. Water is to be clear, clean and potable as described in "Plain and


Reinforced Concrete."

2. Skirting

To backrooms (of CS/HC finish), skirting of ingredients to consist of one part


cement and four parts of sand (1:4), all well mixed and laid over a base of rough
moist plaster of specified thickness. The thickness of skirting is to be 12.5 mm, laid
to a total height of 75 mm, and finished smooth to complete satisfaction and
approval.

3.0 EXECUTION

1. Surface conditions

a. Prior to work of this section, the Contractor is to carefully inspect the


installed work of other trades and verify that such work is complete to the
point where this installation may properly commence. They are to verify that
material may be installed in accordance with the original design, pertinent
codes and regulations, and referenced standards.

b. In case of discrepancy, to be immediately notified with the Contractor not to


proceed with the laying until these have been fully resolved.

d. The concrete floor is to be brushed with a stiff broom before it has


hardened, to remove laitance and give a roughened surface.

Where possible, the screed is to be laid whilst the concrete is green i.e.
within 24 hours of casting. It is to be steel trowelled or using wooden float.

e. Wherever also possible, the surface is to be wet for the 7 days, and to wet
cut for any cracks; blisters or any other making good with same screed mix.

2. Cleaning and Protection

Prevent accumulation of scraps and debris arising from the work of this section.
Maintain premises in a neat and orderly condition at all times. In the event of spilling
or splashing material on to other surfaces immediately remove the same, and traces
of residue, to approval.
