SECTION 075323 EPDM WATERPROOFING

MEMBRANE (FOR RC ROOF BUILD -UP
INC. INSULATION )

SECTION 075323 EPDM WATERPROOFING (FOR RC ROOF INC. INSULATION)

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

This section is for the specification of EPDM waterproofing membrane including all
other roof build-up system materials such as insulation boards, to all the concrete flat
roof and gutters, and is to be read in conjunction with, but not limited to, other
relevant specifications; as shown in Drawings; Bills of Quantities; and Contract
Documents in general to establish the total requirements for the installation of the
roofing system.

1.2 STANDARDS

EPDM waterproofing membrane is to be in full compliance with ASTM C981-05, or

equivalent proposed by the Contractor subject to approval..

1.3 SUBMITTALS

1. Samples

The Contractor is to submit sample of all material comprising the roof build-up
including the waterproofing membrane and insulation boards; and the base
decking. Sample submittal is to be accompanied with relevant product
technical data, for review and approval. Material subsequently delivered to
site to be strictly equal to approved sample

2. Shop Drawing

The Contractor is to submit full shop drawings that show complete installation
and interfacing details of the roof system materials application including all
lapping; upturns; jointing; penetrations; dressing works; and corners etc. as
well as the roof rainfall catchment area and gutter-sizing calculation with PE
Endorsement to be included, for approval before any on-site construction.

3. Work Program

The Contractor is to submit a detail Work Program with referenced to Master

Work Program indicating a schedule for roofover of this area of the building.

4. As Built Drawings

The Specialist is to submit As-Built drawings as accurate record of actual

construction upon completing installation and handing over for maintenance.

1.4 PERFORMANCE

1. The EPDM membrane is to be of minimum 1.52mm thickness.

2. The minimum tensile strength of the membrane is to be 6003Kpa according to

ASTM D412. Reinforced membrane is to elongate by minimum 25% and still
be able to pass a water pressure test for 24 hours without showing pinhole
leaks. There is to be no loss of elongation capability of the membrane due to
weathering, to be tested for a 28 day period and elongate by minimum 20%.

3. A reinforced membrane is to offer good dimensional stability by not changing

more than 0.5% in the machine direction, nor 0.25% in the non-machine
direction.

4. There is to be good ozone resistance when tested for 28 days at 20%

extension in accordance with ASTM D1149, or equivalent proposed by the
Contractor subject to approval...

5. Tear resistance to reinforced membranes is to be tested according to ASTM

D751 (for tongue tear), or equivalent proposed by the Contractor subject to
approval...

6. Factory seams to reinforced membranes should develop a minimum ultimate

load with the result to elongate 10%.

7. Membranes are not to absorb mass of water greater than 3% when immersed
in water in accordance with ASTM D570, or equivalent proposed by the
Contractor subject to approval...

8. For impact and abrasion, membranes are to be capable of withstanding foot

traffic and materials being placed on it during installation.

9. To remain watertight, the membrane is to withstand both static and dynamic

puncture forces which are possible under final in-use roof conditions.

10. Membranes are to be flashed at all roof edges; parapet walls and
penetrations, strictly in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.

11. The Contractor is to ensure that the RC surface to receive the waterproofing
membrane is laid to the fall as indicated; is flat; free from protrusion; dust;
hollowness; or any form of dampness, and is properly prepared to the
satisfaction of the manufacturer or their agent, prior to the commencement of
any on-site waterproofing membrane installation works.

12. The membrane system is to be anchored and protected to prevent any uplift.

2.0 PRODUCTS

1. The membrane is to be an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) type

of elastomeric material that is thermoset (cured or vulcanised). It is to be
recognisable by being able to be elongated by a small load test, and upon
removal of this, being able to return to its original shape.

2. The Contractor is to provide all accessories such as corner pieces; pipe

penetration sleeves; flashing pieces; dressing around supports with metal
rings; and termination piece etc. in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

3.0 EXECUTION

1. The installation of the roof build-up system works including EPDM

waterproofing membrane, is to be carried out in strict compliance with all of
the manufacturers’ recommendations and all approved submittals including
shop drawings; samples; and material technical data.
