SECTION 051213 ARCHITECTURALLY EXPOSED STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

This section applies to the finishing system specification to apply to all visible metal
surfaces and members (except stainless steel), as shown in the drawings, and
reference to the Bills of Quantities and contract documents in general.

1.2 STANDARDS

All galvanising is to be done by hot-dipped process in accordance with BS 729


Specification for Hot Dip Galvanised Coatings on Iron and Steel Articles. Surface
hardness of the paint system to internal visible members is to be to JIS K5400 6.14,
and adhesion for outdoor exposure to JIS A690, with for visible external members the
recommendations of BS 5493 Code of Practice for protective coating of iron and
steel structures against corrosion, in general to apply, or equivalent proposed by the
Contractor subject to approval..

1.3 SUBMITTALS

1. The Contractor is required to make all appropriate submissions with regard to


technical literature; test reports (approved from relevant authority); and colour
samples, with a view towards demonstrating for complete satisfaction, and to
both all technical and aesthetic standard, what the system will achieve in actual
application.

1.4 PERFORMANCE

1. Visible Internal Members

Performance requirements to be recommended by Manufacturer subject to


Employer’s approval.

4. Visible External Members

Performance requirements to be recommended by Manufacturer subject to


Employer’s approval.

2.0 PRODUCTS

1. Paint system finishing coat is to ensure a surface finish that is smooth and
homogenous with only any required and approved texture of the application
such as fine sandpaper or orange- peel, to be visible. The finish is to be such as
an epoxy coat, and final polyurethane coating. The protective coating system
applied prior to this finishing paint system is to comply with Section 051223.

2. Paint system colour and gloss content is to be strictly to approval, with the
system to allow for touch-up after installation, such that the appearance of the
adjacent area blends in with the touched-up areas, and with there being no
difference in tone or colour.

3. Prior to the application of at least one initial coat of primer in compliance with the
requirements listed under the performance article, the steel surfaces are to be
prepared strictly according to only the manufacturer’s specifications.

4. Particularly in the case of visible external members, the Contractor is to engage


a specialist sub-contractor accredited to undertake corrosion protection works
first to comply with Section 051223.

3.0 EXECUTION

1. Application of the paint systems to both visible internal and external metal
members is to be executed in strict compliance only with the manufacturer's
recommendations.
