Chestie's auction house has announced that its first Cubism sculpture, Tête de
Femme, is up for auction for $30 million.
Pablo
Picasso's
sculpture
"Tête de
Femme
(Fernande)",
described as
his first
cubist figure,
will be the
protagonist
of the
outstanding
20th Century Art auction that Christie's will hold next May in New York, where
it is expected to reach 30 million dollars. The piece, owned by the Metropolitan
Museum of New York (Met), will go on sale so that the prestigious institution
can buy other works of art for its collection with these funds, as explained this
Thursday in a statement by the director of Christie's in America, Marc Porter.
"Created in 1909, this three-dimensional bronze bust, inspired by the artist's
first muse, Fernande Olivier, is an extraordinary example, and represents an
absolutely pivotal moment in the development of Picasso's artistic practice,
Cubism," Porter explained in the text. Initially executed in clay, the sculpture is
the culmination of a series of studies in painting by Fernande Olivier, Picasso's
first great love, and represents a pivotal moment in Cubism, a movement that
revolutionized the artistic traditions of recent centuries. "Tête de Femme
(Fernande)" reimagines the distinctive features of his muse with a combination
of fragmented geometric forms, and was produced by the Spanish artist in a
period of intense creation during the summer of 1909, a period that Picasso
spent together with Fernande in a town in Catalonia, Horta de Ebro, now
known as Horta de Sant Joan. About twenty copies of the sculpture are known
to exist, most of which are owned by public institutions, including the Musée
National Picasso (Paris), the National Gallery (Prague), the Museum of Modern
Art in New York (MoMA ) and the National Gallery of Art (Washington DC).
Before being auctioned in May, the piece will go on public display at Christie's
Hong Kong and London, before returning to New York shortly before the sale.

Alexia Putellas: The fight for the future of women's football must continue

The 2021 Ballon d'Or winner, who last season led FC Barcelona Femení to the
first treble in its history, recalls that there is still a lot of work to be done to
continue the success of women's football.

Ever since she was little, Alexia Putellas, superstar of FC Barcelona, always
dreamed of playing for the Barça team.
She grew up in Mollet del Vallès, a small town on the outskirts of Barcelona,
where she played soccer in the square – the only girl among a bunch of boys.
And when he wasn't playing, Alexia Putellas watched games.
Whenever they could, the family went to the Camp Nou to watch the men's
team play. And when not, they saw him in a local bar. Putellas remembers that
one year, desperate to see the Clásico against Real Madrid, she ended up on a
pool table so she could see the screen above the heads of the adults.
Now, at 28, the Spaniard is at the top of women's football.
After winning the treble with FC Barcelona, Putellas grabbed all the accolades:
UEFA's Footballer of the Year award, FIFA's The Best, and the prestigious
Ballon d'Or.
The rise of the Barça midfielder to the top has not been meteoric but it has
been constant. And of course, it required her to fight against the obstacles that
many young women who try to be professional encounter.
Speaking to the Associated Press (AP) on the occasion of International
Women's Day (March 8), Putellas took the opportunity to talk about the current
state of women's football and compare it with its beginnings:
“Today is the day to vindicate. We have achieved many things, but we still have
a lot to do”, warned Putellas. "And from our position, we will try to make the
day come when it is not necessary to claim."

“I trained in the worst possible conditions, at the worst possible time and with
coaches who were the parents of my teammates. So when you're young you
didn't learn much."
"That's why I say that the 12-14-year-old girls who are now training to be
soccer players, when they reach the first team, they will be much better than
we were. Because they have conditions that we didn't have when we were
young”.
"And if we have reached this level, can you imagine where they can go?"
Work with the best in the world
Alexia Putellas' question is more than existential.
Because wondering how far it was possible to go and how it was possible to
get there is what has propelled his career.
Lluís Cortés, Barça coach in the treble season, assured BBC Sport that Putellas
did not have a guaranteed place at the top.
"You looked at her and thought, 'OK, she's a good player, but she's not the
best.' It was good, but it needed to improve in a lot of things", explained.
“But the best thing about Alexia is that she knew and worked very hard. She
worked every day to be the best in the world.”
“When we finished games, he never asked, 'What have I done right?' He always
asked, 'What have I done wrong and what can I do to improve?'"
The fruits of all that work are now obvious, and not only in terms of prizes. Few
can deny the magic with which Putellas connects with Jennifer Hermoso,
Spain's all-time leading goalscorer, Norwegian winger Caroline Graham
Hansen and Dutch star Lieke Mertens

The feminist movement as political spoils

As every year, this March 8th, the will of some
of the Mexican women took to the streets. There were many people (75,000) who
protested against femicide, gender violence, the wage gap, glass ceilings and the many
ways in which being a woman in Mexico puts us at an unfair disadvantage.
Women marched as we have done for many years, mostly peacefully, but increasingly with
more and more attendees and diversity. We filled the streets of several cities in historic,
moving and necessary marches.
Through several marches and many years of struggle, the feminist movement has become
the most important organized contingent in Mexico. A group that has managed to change
policies, overturn appointments and design new laws. A sector perceived as legitimate and
with ample capacity for mobilization. In other words, feminism is an organization that has
everything the opposition and the ruling group desire.
Without planning it, the feminist movement has become a precious booty for political
parties, opposition currents and big business. A prize that everyone is fighting to
represent.
Thus, women's groups linked to the ruling party have tried to sell the idea that, thanks to
Obradorism and the concerted actions of peaceful protest that they carried out, the march
was a success. They claim to have given hundreds of flowers to the policewomen
guarding the march and thus created a climate of camaraderie that permeated the entire
movement.

On the other hand, groups

antagonistic to the ruling party have wanted to position a completely opposite reading. They argue
that the ruling party tried to intimidate the demonstrators, deploying thousands of police in the
streets, barricading historical monuments with metal barricades and spreading the idea that the
march would be violent.

Businessmen also have their own narrative. Thousands of companies modified the protest by
sending gifts to influential women and organizing "women's empowerment" events. The more
politicized parts of the business community - such as the organizer of the opposition alliance "Yes
for Mexico", Claudio X. Gonzalez - took advantage of the protests to declare López Obrador's
government a threat to women, democracy, health, the environment, the poor and anything else
that fit in a tweet

Will Morena and its allies support women?

Now that the race to lead the ruling party Morena has intensified, we
wonder who will the party nominate for the upcoming elections. When
López Obrador was trying to secure his victory, he promised the PT
that Morena and its allies would nominate the same number of women
and men during the 2021 elections. Sources said PT members
remembered this promise now that Alberto Anaya, the head of the PT,
visited the President to voice his support. Now, the question is: how
many female candidates will represent Morena? Which famous
politicians will be left out?
