There are no rules for academic style that apply to all situations. The
following are guidelines that should help you develop a style of your own:
❏ (a) Do not use idiomatic or colloquial vocabulary: humans/people, kids,
boss, stuff, thing. Instead use standard English: individuals, children,
manager, items, concept/idea
❏ (b) Use vocabulary accurately. There is a difference between kindness and
generosity.
❏ (c) Statements should use tentative language. Avoid absolute statements
such as unemployment causes crime. Instead use cautious phrases:
unemployment may cause crime or tends to cause crime. For example:
❏ Love may be a reason for…
❏ Love likely is a reason for…
❏ Love potentially is a reason for..
❏ Love tends to be a reason for…
❏ lasting forever or for a long time: abiding, enduring, everlasting, steadfast, undying, unfailing
❏ They had declared their undying love for each other.
❏ tell someone you love him or her: confess, declare, proclaim, profess
❏ In a moving scene, Brad declares his love for Lucy.
❏ look for someone who will give you love: look for, pursue, seek
❏ Many people join dating websites seeking love.
