DEMAGNETIZATION PROCEDURE
Procedure No: IXAR/OXY/TOCO/DM-43 Rev. 0 Page No.: 4 of 8

1.0 Purpose:

All ferromagnetic material will retain some residual magnetism, the strength of which is
dependent on the retentively of the part. Residual magnetism does not affect the
mechanical properties of the part.

A strong residual magnetic field in a part to be welded or electroplated could interfere with
welding or plating process.

The purpose of this procedure is to define the requirement of the demagnetization using AC
electromagnetic yoke for 10” Fuel Gas Line Replacement and CPF Mix Fuel Drum Risk
Reduction#230-231

2.0 Scope:

This procedure describes the demagnetization using AC electromagnetic yoke applied to

reduce strength of residual magnetism for 10” Fuel Gas Line Replacement and CPF Mix Fuel
Drum Risk Reduction#230-231

6.0 Personnel Qualification:

All personnel shall be qualified and certified to Level II in the Magnetic particle examination
method in accordance with IXAR written practice in compliance with ASNT-SNT-TC-1A
(2016).

The Level III personnel who are qualifying NDT personnel shall pass the ASNT Level III
examination in Basic and MT method which meets the requirements specified in ASNT-SNT-

DEMAGNETIZATION PROCEDURE
Procedure No: IXAR/OXY/TOCO/DM-43 Rev. 0 Page No.: 6 of 8

Personnel performing Magnetic particle examination shall have natural or corrected near
distance acuity in at least one eye such that they are capable of reading a minimum of
Jaeger No.1 or equivalent type and size letter at a distance greater than 12”.

And also be capable of distinguishing between colours used during the examination
demonstrated by correctly reading 20 of the 24 plates of Ishihara colour vision test charts.

Vision test should be carried out annually.

The Level III shall continuously monitor the performance of MT personnel certified to Level II
and shall take corrective actions whenever the performance of MT Level II technician is not
satisfactory.

All qualification certification shall be valid.

7.0 Magnetic Particle Examination Procedure:

Demagnetization shall be performed in accordance with a written procedure.

The procedure shall be reviewed and endorsed by ASNT Level III in MT, prior to approval.

Demagnetization shall be carried out only after the written procedure is approved by client.

8.0 Surface Preparation:

Surface to be tested and adjacent areas within at least 25mm shall be clean, dry, and free of
paint, grease, oil, lint, scale, rust, weld spatter, flux and other extraneous materials which may
interfere with examination process.

Surface preparation by grinding, machining, or other methods may be necessary where

surface irregularities could mask indications.

9.0 Equipment and Consumables:

AC Electromagnetic yoke
AC Electromagnetic yoke manufactured by Magnaflux or equivalent shall be used.
Yokes are usually C-shaped which induce a magnetic field between the poles and are used
for local demagnetization.

Many portable yokes have articulated legs that allow the legs to be adjusted to contact
irregular surfaces or two surfaces that join at an angle.

DEMAGNETIZATION PROCEDURE
Procedure No: IXAR/OXY/TOCO/DM-43 Rev. 0 Page No.: 7 of 8

Gauss Meter
A device that measures magnetic flux density or magnetic induction (a quantity directly related
to magnetic field strength or magnetic force).

The effectiveness of the demagnetizing operation can be indicated by the use of gauss meter.

10.0 Reason for Demagnetization:

Residual magnetic field can interfere with electronic equipment such as compass. It can
create a condition known as “arc blow” in the welding process. Arc blow may cause the weld
arc to wonder or filler metal to be repelled from the weld. It can cause abrasive particles to
cling to bearing or faying surfaces and increase wear.

During cleaning operations, chips may adhere to the surface and interfere with subsequent
operations such as painting.

11.0 Residual Magnetism:

All ferromagnetic materials, after having been magnetized, will retain a residual magnetic field
to some degree. This residual magnetism on the line pipe shall not exceed 20 gauss, as
measured at the pipe ends with Hall Effect gauss meter. Contractor shall ensure that residual
magnetism does not impede welding.

12.0 Technique/Examination:

There are a number of ways of demagnetizing a part, all based on the principle of subjecting
the part to a field continually reversing its direction and at the same time gradually decreasing
in strength to zero (Fig. 1).

Areas requiring demagnetization shall be processed by placing and moving energized.

Alternating Current yokes across the affected area and withdrawing the yoke whilst it is “ON”.

The measurement of residual magnetism and demagnetization is done at edge of the pipe or
plate.

To demagnetize the affected area we have to follow the following steps:-

 Measure and record the residual flux density on the surface to be demagnetized
 Place the poles of the AC Yoke on the surface to be demagnetized
 Activate it
 Moved the pole in a circular pattern
 Slowly withdrawn up to 18” from the work piece while the yoke is energized
 Repeat the process 3-4 times to demagnetize the part in acceptable limit
