force gases coming from the burning gun powder.
4. DIRECT MOTION – Forward movement of the projectiles inside the gun barrel.
5. ROTARY MOTION – Gyrating action either left or right of the projectiles while passing
through the gun barrel.
6. INTERNAL BALLISTICS – Refers to the motion, attribution, and characteristics of bullet
while inside the firearms and extends from breech to muzzle point.
7. TRANSITIION BALLISTICS – Study of the projectile’s behavior when it leaves the
barrel and the pressure behind projectiles is equalized.
8. MUZZLE BLAST – Noise created by the muzzle end of firearms after explosion
9. MUZZLE ENERGY – Energy generated of the muzzle point.
10. TRAJECTORY – Refers to a parabola – like flight of the projectiles from the time it
leaves the muzzle until it hits the target.
11. RANGE – Refers to imaginary distance between the muzzle and the target.
12. ACCURATE RANGE – Distance within which shooter has control of his shots.
13. EFFECTIVE RANGE – Distance within the bullet is expected to be lethal.
14. PENETRATION – The depth of the entry on the target
15. AIR RESISTANCE – Force of the air encountered by bullet in its flight.
16. PULL OF GRAVITY – Downward reaction of bullet towards the surface due to its
weight.
17. TERMINAL ACCURACY – Size of the bullet grouping on the target.
18. TERMINAL ENERGY – Energy of the projectiles when it strikes the target.
19. TERMINAL VELOCITY – Speed of the bullet upon penetrating the target.
20. TERMINAL PENETRATION – Depth of the bullet in the target.
21. TERMINAL BALLISTICS – The effects of the impacts of the projectile on the target.
22. SHOTS BALLISTICS – Study of shot from smoothbore firearms like shotgun and
musket.
23. BUCKSHOT – Refers to a large size of pellets.
24. BIRDSHOT – Refers to a small size of pellets.
25. SHOTGUN – A smoothbore, fires multiple pellets, also can fire a single shot.
26. SHOTGUN SHELL – A single unit of ammunition for shotgun, Either pellets or slugs as
projectiles.
27. CHILLED SHOT – Shotgun pellets made from lead are specially hardened by the
addition of slight amount of antimony.
28. DRAM EQUIVALENT – Measurement of gunpowder in a shotshell.
29. PELLETS – Terms in a shotgun projectile.
30. TUBULAR CASE – Case usually made up of paper, plastic, or metal.
31. METAL BASE – Containing primer, powder, or propellant.
32. SLUG – Single projectile and is used for hunting.
33. WOUND BALLISTICS – Study of the effects of projectiles on the human body.
34. SHOTGUN WOUND – Open wound produced by the penetration of a bullet slug within
the tissues of the body.
35. PINK COLORATION – Caused by adsorbed carbon monoxide in the skin and flesh.
36. FORENSIC BALLISTICS – Firearm identification and investigation by means of
ammunition fired through the firearm.
37. FIELD INVESTIGATION – Conducted by the officer in the case in the field.
38. PERCUSSION IGNITION – Detonation of priming mixture when it is struck by the firing
pin.
39. RIFLINGS – It imparts rotary to a bullet to sustain stability in flight and for deeper
impacts on a target.
40. REVOLVER PISTOL – Hand operated firearm with a revolving cylinder containing
chambers for individual cartridges.
41. MUZZLE PATTERN – Indicates contact of wounds to the muzzle often observed in
suicide cases.
42. SCORCHING – Caused by flame or hot gasses not by hot projectiles.
43. HARRISON GILROY TEST – A test that checks the presence of antimony, barium, and
lead.
44. PARRAFIN TEST – Used of paraffin cast which will turn blue if there is a presence of
nitrates.
45. TATTOING – Caused by embedding of unburnt and semi – burnt powder particles into
the surface of the target.
46. DIRT RING – Deposited by some projectiles which carry greases around the wound.
47. BLACKENING – Caused by deposition of smoke particles by all types of powders at
close range.
48. PROJECTILES - an object that is propelled by the application of an external force and
then moves freely under the influence of gravity and air resistance.
49. GUN BARREL – A metal tube of a gun, through which the shot is discharged.
50. BULLET - bullet is the metal object that is fired out of a gun when its trigger is pulled
