Module 5

Disease Prevention and Control

Lesson No 1 : Common Disease and their Prevention

At the end of the module, the students should be able to:

a. To know the proper medication and basic tools and equipment's

needed and to acquire those basic first aid tips.

INTRODUCTION

The module aims to give the students the understanding on herd

health management. Every production unit should have a comprehensive
herd health program. Each herd will have a unique program based on the
health challenges, facilities, location and finances of that production
facility. Consultation with the herd veterinarian is essential for establishing
appropriate guidelines for maintaining the health of the swine herd. Input
from all farm employees is needed to optimize the successful
development and implementation of a cost-effective program.

In this module, the students will learn about:

1. Characteristics of healthy hogs

2. Common diseases and their prevention and control
3. Animal health program
Pre-Assessment

TRUE/FALSE Directions:Read each statement below carefully. Place

a T on the line if you think the statement is TRUE. Place an F on the
line if you think the statement is FALSE. (Individual Activity)

_____1 Checked the pig carefully at time of arrival for sign of disease
or poorly doing pigs.
_____2. Removed any diseased or poorly doing pigs and give special
medication and feed.
_____3. Keep newly purchased pigs isolated from other pigs on the
farm.
_____4. You should not provide medication in water.
_____5. Mix newly pigs and old pigs.
_____6. Keep pigs group by source and sub-group them if necessary
by size.
_____7. Deworm pigs upon arrival using broad spectrum dewormers.
_____8. Workers need to enter the nursery after being in contact with
other pigs.
_____9. Workers are require to take a shower before re-entering the
nursery if necessary.
_____10. Disease is also a factor in swine nutrients.
Learning Tasks

Pigs have a long history of providing food and fat for mankind. Before the advent
of grained-based cooking oils, rendered pig fat (lard) was commonly used to add
flavour and calories to food. Meat from pigs was often a secondary reason to raise
pigs. During the early 1900’s pigs were referred to as “mortgage lifters” because
farmers could almost always turn a good profit by raising pigs. The commercial
industry has evolved quite a bit from those days, but with the current “local food”
movement, small scale swine production can still be profitably practiced

Abstraction

A swine disease prevention strategy should be a common practice for all hog
farmers. To have a successful farm, keeping animals healthy is a must. A health
plan for your herd will help to minimize disease incidence. Pig specific diseases can
have major repercussions for the herd, the farm and people themselves.

Herd health management and observation can be taken to maintain the

health of pigs in a swine operation. Healthy stocks is the best way to prevent having
to deal with swine disease. Observation is the key not only to new stocks, but the
entire herd walk the pens daily to observe any sign of ill health, unusual behaviour,
or potentially sick pigs.

Never introduce new stock into a herd directly. Farms should have barns
available to keep separated from the rest of the herd a minimum of 30 days. Make
sure the herd is tested for specific disease prior to their addition or return to the
farm, and also for parasite control. There are a variety of compounds for the latter
and vaccinations constitute a major part in the control of the disease. The best times
to administer compounds and vaccinations are prior to breeding and before
farrowing.
Application
Task 5. Direction: Supply the graphic organizer, If you are the husbandman of the
swine production what would you do about African Swine Fever Arises, what
would be your mitigating measures to stop the spread of the disease .
