Hair and flowers: Getting the right colors for the rainbow hair is priority, so mix and match
your cotton yarns, 50g / 1,7 oz pr color.
Purple / Baby pink / Hot pink / Orange / Yellow / Green / Baby blue / Blue

Stuffing: You will need a lot of stuffing for the Unicorn, so consider buying a large
fiber filled pillow as a cheaper and more firm alternative to teddy stuffing.

Repeat and make two legs in total - set a side until assembly.

PATTERN - BODY
Yarn: 2 strains of white cotton yarn
Hook: 3,5mm / D3

Stuffing: Stuff the body intermittently - be generous with the stuffing this will help to get
the right shape of the body, as well as having the strength to support head and
hair. - The more stuffing, the better and stronger the unicorn will sit at the end.

Insert front legs in round, see directions below:

Markers on Find center front (CF) on the body, and mark both stitches with stitch markers
BODY: CF = stitch nr. 55 + 56 from beginning of round.
Count 14 stitches in both directions, and mark the 14th stitch.
You should now have 13 sts between the markers (see photo on the next page)

Markers on Mark the first stitch on the beginning of the round,

FRONT LEGS: count 15 sts backwards on the round, and mark the 15th st.
You should now have 14 sts between markers (see photo on the next page)

Place a front leg on either sider of CF - use the yarn tail from the legs to sew
the 14 sts on the leggs into the 13 sts on the body.

Do not sew in the marked stitches, as these should count in the new round.

The round is now 102 stitches - incl the marked stitches.

ASSEMBLY
In this guide you will find the order and directions for assembling Rainbow the
Unicorn. Read the entire chapter carefully before starting the assembly.

HEAD: As soon as the head is finished you can start to assemble the smaller parts.

EARS: Let the ears curve inward on the front side, and stuff the very lightly to keep the
shape of the ear.
Place the ears approx. 7 cm / 2.75 in apart, covering rd 19 - 23 counted from
the center back of the head. Fasten the ears with pins to evaluate the symmetry
of the placement before final assembly.

HORN: Place the horn between the ears, and let the back edge of the horn start 1
round in front of the front edge of the ears.

Chose a rose-colored piece of yarn to make the twist of the horn.

Feed the yarn through the horn, approx. 1 cm / 0.4 in from the tip.
Tie the two ends tightly together around the tip of the horn, with a double knot.
Twist the yarn around the horn in a descending spiral (3-4 cm / 1-1,5 in. gap)
The yarn must be tight, in such a way that it will stay in place and it creates a
spiral in the horn.
Lastly, take the yarn all way around the base of the horn and fasten off.

NOSTRILLS: With the same yarn as used for the body

Sew 10 times around the same 5 rds (rd 14-19 from the center of the mule)
Place the nostrills approx. 8 stitches apart

EYES: Use left over black yarn to embroider the eyes on both side of the head.
The eye should measure across approx. 10 rds of the head.
(rd 24-33 from the back of the head)

guidepost should be approx. 7 sts below the ear

Symmetry: The most important thing when assembling Rainbow the Unicorn is symme-
try. Attach all parts with pins before final assembly, and trust your own judge-
ment to see if it looks the way you want it to.

HEAD on Make sure that the neck of the body is well stuffed before you attach the
BODY: head, but be aware of the shape of the body and neck. It is important that the
neck is strong and stabil, as the hair is much heavier than one would assume.
Place the head so the mule point a little downward, and attempt a good bal-
ance so the placement seems natural on the body.

FRONT- and Connect and fasten the front legs together

BACK LEGS: near the foot so they stay connected.
Rainbow should be able to sit on its own
- if not, you have not added enough stuffing
to the body and front legs.

The placement of the back legs is all about

creating balance and extra stability to the body.

Sit Rainbow on an even surface and place the back legs as close to the front
legs as possible, the edge of the back leg should rest on the table surface
and the opening of the back leg should follow the curve of the body. (see pic
on the top of the page)

HAIR, TAIL and Assembly of hair, tail and roses can be found in the recipes on the following
ROSES: pages.

13 FLYV FLYV
RAINBOW THE UNICORN
PATTERN - HAIR
Yarn: 1 strain of cotton yarn
Hook: 2,5 / C2

There are many ways to make the hair, depending on how much curl you want.
I prefer to make a mix of these two versions. I use about 50 g / 1,7 oz of each
color, and make as many hair strains as possible. If you are using different types
of cotton yarn, the amount may vary, therefore it can be a good idea to assem-
ble the hair intermittently so you can evaluate the amount of hair strains from
each color.

REMEMBER: • To make 25-35 shorter hair strains for the bangs in the purple yarn (ch 40)
• To make 4-6 longer hair strains of each color for the tail (ch 90)

Version 1: Begin with approx. 10 cm / 4 in tail for assembly

(minimal curl) ch 70 - turn
Skip 1 st, 2in1, 3 sc, 2in1, 5 sc, 2in1, 1 sc in each st for the rest of chain
cut yarn - leave 10 cm / 4 in tail for assembly

Version 2: Begin with approx. 10 cm / 4 in. tail for assembly

(krøllet ende) ch 70 - turn
skip 1 st, * 2in1, 1 sc* x 5, 1 sc in each st for the rest of chain
cut yarn - leave 10 cm / 4 in. tail for assembly

ASSEMBLE: Start attaching the hair on the round between the ears, use the reg. hair strains,
the width of the mane should cover the width between the ears: 7 cm / 2,75 in
Work towards the horn in a point using all the shorter hair strains.
After this, work down the back of the head, and let the width of the mane stay
the same all the way down, one block of color at a time in a rainbow:
Purple / Baby pink / Hot pink / Orange / Yellow / Green / Baby blue / Blue

start

Use a blunt needle to feed one of the yarn tails through one of the stitch holes
of the head and back up in the next round. Tie the two yarn tails together with a
double knot and cut away surplus yarn tail.

Make sure to assemble the hair in a downward motion, this will make sure the
knots from the assembly are hidden and it gives the hair volume.
14 FLYV FLYV
RAINBOW THE UNICORN
I advise you to attatch hair strains in all the stitch holes in the
designated area on the top of the head so the edges of the mane
become full and voluptuous.
Whereas you can make the distance between the strains a little
bigger in the centre, further down the mane.

BE AWARE: It is important that the edges of the mane are closely attached and
have a full look all the way down.

TAIL: Pick a starting point atop the behind, where the tail looks natural
and work around this area in a diameter of 2,5 cm / 1 in.
Colors are placed randomly.
Assemble the tail hairs with the same technique as the mane, but
place as many strains in each stitch hole as possible.

PATTERN - ROSE
Yarn: 1 strain of cotton (color by choice, e.g: rose/purple/pink)
Hook: 2,5

You can also work from the diagram, starting at the red arrow

guide: Begin with a long tail for assembly

1. rd: ch 56, vend

2. rd: skip 5 sts, 1 dc *skip 2 sts, [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] in 1 st* x 17, ch 3, turn

guide: You now have a row of 18 V-shapes,

in next rd. work around the 2 ch sts in the top of the V

3. rd: [1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the V, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the next V* x17, ch1,
turn

guide: You now have a double row of V-shape, that is starting to arch.
This rd you will need to work in both the top of the V’s and in be-
tween the V’s:

4. rd: *[7 hdc] in the V, 1 sc between V’s* x 6

*[9 dc] in the V, 1 sc between V’s* x 6
*[11 dbstgm] in the V, 1 sc between V’s* x 5
[11 dbstgm] in the V, 1 sc in the last st.

Cut the yarn: Leave a long tail for assembly

ASSEMBLE: Roll the rose with the largest pedals on the outside and sew at the
base to keep the shape. Make as many roses as you wish.
Make 1-2 green leaves pr rose and attach underneath each rose.
