Course Aim and Description


This course covers the hair and hair care products. Topics
include anatomy and physiology of the hair. Formulation
and testing of hair care products such as shampoos,
conditioners, anti-dandruff products, hair dyes, chemical hair
reshaping, depilatories and hair loss products are discussed.
Natural products and nanotechnology involved in hair care
formulations are also covered.

Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:


a1 – Describe the anatomy, physiology and chemistry of the hair as a basis for formulation of
hair care products.
a2 – Identify the different hair types, shape and texture, as well as the hair growth phases.
a3 – Recognize the different hair care products (shampoos, conditioners, anti-dandruff
products, hair dyes, chemical hair reshaping, depilatories and hair loss products) and their
ingredients.
a4 – Assess the physicochemical and functional aspects of different hair care products.
a5- Describe the advantages of using natural ingredients in formulation of hair care products
a6- Explain the applications of nanotechnology in hair care products formulation.

b1- Differentiate between the various hair care products and their
ingredients.
b2- Compare between the efficacy and safety of hair care formulations
containing ingredients of natural origin versus those based on synthetic
components.
b3. Understand the theoretical background to select the proper
ingredients and methodologies for the preparation and characterization of
effective hair care products
