Course Title: Energy in Architecture

Course Code: ARC 615
Credit: 3

Course Coordinator: Dr. S. A. David

Course Instructor(s): Dr. S. A. David
Course Tutor(s): Dr. S. A. David

Course Description

Energy in Architecture will focus needs and use in buildings. Topics will include: Energy
conci0us buildings; definition and weaknesses in current theories, and methods of
generating building design; sources of energy consumption in buildings; Thermal
comfort and energy use; analyses of design and building-in-use; development of base
models; energy and building types and the implication of alternative sources of energy
in building design.

Overall Learning Outcomes / Aim of the Course:

At the end of this course, learners should be able to demonstrate an understanding
of the concepts of energy and its integration in architecture.

Specific Objectives for the Course

Through this course, students should be able to

(i) describe and explain conceptual meaning, nature and sources of energy.
(ii) identify and describe sources of energy consumption in buildings
(iii) analyze and understand energy loads in different building types
(iv) understand the implications of alternative energy in buildings and design
of building typologies.
(v) Understand energy conscious buildings and the methods of generating
them.
(vi) Understand and synthesize development of base models for building
energy use.
(vii) Analyze designs and buildings-in-use for building energy justice and
efficiency.
(viii) Understand buildings’ energy needs and sustainable buildings principles.
(ix) Understand the relationship between thermal comfort and energy in
buildings.
In addition to the above stated objectives, a weekly (or each module) objectives
will be released as stream information for subjects, topics or issues to be
examined or discussed for the weekly modules.
