PROBLEM SET

HYPOTHESIS TESTING: TESTS BETWEEN MEANS

1. Refer to the table of student t-distribution and find the critical value of t. Fill the table
below:

2. The daily wages of factory workers in the country today is assumed as normally
distributed with mean of Php 350.00. Factory XYZ employs 200 workers and pays on the
average Php 315.00 a day with a standard deviation of Php. 25.50. Can Factory XYZ be
accused of paying inferior wages to its employees at 0.05 level of significance?

3. The ABC that company claims that the average lifetime of a certain tire is at least 28,000
km. To check the claim, a taxi company puts 40 of these tires on its taxis and gets a mean
lifetime of 25,560 km. With a standard deviation of 1,350 km, is the claim true? Use the
z-test at 0.05.

4. NAWASA is in the process of finding alternative sources of water supply so they are
trying to test rivers as possible sources. A team of employees claims that the mean pH
level of water in a nearby river is 6.6. To check, the management randomly took 15 water
samples and measure their pH. The mean and standard deviation are 6.8 and 0.22,
respectively. Is there enough evidence to reject the team’s claim at α = 5%?

5. It is said that the normal mean systolic blood pressure is 120 mm Hg with a standard
deviation of 18 mm Hg. A random sample of 40 persons were taken and was observed to
have a mean systolic blood pressure of 135 mm Hg. Can we conclude that the sys tolic
blood pressure of the sample is higher than that of the population at 5% level of
significance?
