ACTIVITY: Integumentary System

1, Recognize the 2 layers of the skin. Locate all the parts eventually. Describe.

Epidermis-Structurally, the avascular epidermis is a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium

consisting of four distinct cell types and four or five distinct layers. Most epidermal cells are
keratinocytes (literally, “Keratin cells”). These epithelial cells produce keratin, a tough, fibrous
protein that gives the epidermis its durability and protective capabilities.

Dermis The dense fibrous connective tissue making up the bulk of the dermis has two principal
regions the papillary and reticular areas

2. Make a very good illustration of the integumentary system. Label accordingly.

3.Examine the hair structure. If possible, locate the root.

Hairs are found over the entire body surface, except for the palms of the hands, the soles of the
feet, parts of the external genitalia, the nipples, and the lips. A hair, enclosed in a hair follicle, is
also an epithelial structure The part of the hair enclosed within the follicle is called the root; the
portion projecting from the skin is the shaft. The hair is formed by mitosis of the germinal
epithelial cells at the base of the follicle (the hair bulb). As the daughter cells are pushed away
from the growing region, they become keratin Sized and die; thus, the bulk of the hair shaft, like
the bulk of the epidermis, is dead material Hair follicles originate in the first and second
layers of your skin (epidermis and dermis). Follicles holding your terminal hair, or the
hair that grows on your scalp, eyelashes, and eyebrows, extend into the first and
second layer of your skin and sometimes into the third layer (subcutaneous tissue).

4. Find differences and similarities between the human skin and pig skin.

Pigskin has a similar epidermis as human skin, with a comparable thickness. Small
mammals have a much thinner epidermis. This upper layer is a vascularized in all
species studied. The dermis is mainly composed of collagen and elastin fibers.
