Rock salt is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of halite, or sodium chloride. It forms through the evaporation of huge quantities of ocean or salt lake water in arid climates with limited freshwater input. This leaves thick lateral deposits of the water-soluble mineral salt across the world. To deposit a thick layer of salt requires long periods of sea water evaporation over time. Rock salt is used for food preservation through pickling and brining, keeping ice frozen longer in coolers, and dissolving ice on sidewalks and roads.

ACTIVITY #2: TYPES OF ROCKS
NAME OF THE ROCK: Rock Salt
ROCK TYPE: Sedimentary DESCRIPTION: Halite, a mineral made of sodium chloride, is the main component of the sedimentary rock more commonly known as rock salt. It forms when huge quantities of a salt lake or ocean water evaporate from an arid climatic region, where there is a limited supply of freshwater input. Numerous locations across the world contain deposits of rock salt that are lateral rock units. These water-soluble rocks are rarely found at Earth's surface, except in arid countries. To deposit a thick layer of salt, long periods of sea water evaporation had to occur in an arid climate, in basins where there was a continuous or repeated influx of new ocean water. To make one foot of salt, over 100 feet of ocean water must be evaporated. So, more than a mile of sea water would have evaporated to create a salt layer that is 50 feet thick. USE: In food preservation techniques like pickling, brining, and canning, rock salt is especially helpful. You can add rock salt to the ice in your cooler too, to help it stay frozen longer by lowering the melting temperature. Of course, rock salt is commonly used to dissolve the ice on sidewalks and roads.
