A long, long time ago, there lived a boy named Rodney in a village.
A
He was very happy with his family. Unfortunately, he and his fellow
villagers faced a severe drought each year. They desperately waited
for rain but with no luck. There was no water anywhere. All the
crops, land, and even trees died. The cattle started dying. People
had to go far away with the hope of getting water. As there was no

rain, the stream was drying up slowly.

One night, Rodney said to the villagers, “Hey, we all have heard tales
from our grandparents about an underground river flowing through
our village. Why don’t we dig and see?” The villagers agreed and
B started digging. They dug for some days but gave up soon. However,
Rodney kept on digging. When people told him to give up, he said, “I
believe in what I’m doing.”

Then, one day, when he had dug deep enough, Rodney saw water.
His attitude of not giving up saved the whole village. “Never give up

C so easily,” Rodney advised all the villagers. Afterwards, they were


never short of water and whenever any problem arose, all the
villagers came together and found a solution.

B. GRAMMAR: VERB PATTERNS AND VERBS OF SENSATION


1. Verb patterns
 MAKE
 We can use make to mean ‘force or cause someone (to do something)’. We use it
with an infinitive without TO.
Examples: My teacher makes me do homework.
The old man made Tony pick up his trash.
The story makes him laugh.
Nothing will make Nancy change her mind.
 We can also use make with emotions. In this case, we use adjectives after objects.
Examples: Petting my cat makes me happy.
The ending of this movie made her sad.
 HATE, LOVE, LIKE, WANT
 We often use hate, love, and like with the -ING form of verbs to suggest our
enjoyment (or lack of it) of doing something.
Examples: I like making jam.
She loves going to the beach in summer.
Tom hates decorating. He’s bad at it.
 We use want with the TO-infinitive form to talk about wishes and needs.
Examples: This shirt is nice. Do you want to try it?
Kate does not want to come home late.

2. Verbs of sensation
 Verbs of sensation include look, taste, feel, smell, and sound.

 We use adjectives after these verbs.


Examples: The cookies smell delicious.
You look great in that shirt.
His voice sounded strange on the phone.
