Literacy Lab & Literacy for Life Classes

This class requires special placement and is designed to supplement the required language arts courses. The purpose of the literacy class is to identify students strengths and weaknesses in reading and writing. We will capitalize on students strengths and interests to encourage reading and writing for pleasure as well as for specific purposes. Specific interventions will be implemented to help students improve their reading and writing skills so they are able to independently read grade-level texts and write with grade-level proficiency standards. Students will read a variety of grade level texts, applying strategies appropriate to various genres. Students will also write for a variety of purposes and audiences in order to improve their ideas, organization, voice, and conventions. Finally, students will speak and listen for a variety of purposes and in a variety of settings.

Standards
1. Reading 2. Writing 3. Speaking & Listening Performance Standards The statements below describe how well students must perform the benchmark standards. The proficient level is required to meet the standards. Students performing at a proficient level independently read and comprehend a variety of materials: novels, short stories, and informational text. Students predict outcomes, draw inferences, determine cause/effect, summarize key concepts, and differentiate between fact and opinion. They distinguish readers response and authors purpose, analyze and interpret authors use of literary devices, and distinguish common themes through student-generated work. Students analyze and interpret data. Students also write with well-developed ideas, strong organizational style, engaging and appropriate voice, and with correct formal English conventions. The level descriptors help teachers to judge where students are performing in relation to the standards. A general definition of these levels is provided below. Advanced Students who perform at the advanced level use their knowledge of language arts in complex and abstract situations and can communicate, argue, and articulate information and ideas. Proficient Students who perform at the proficient level use concepts and skills to acquire and communicate information and ideas using appropriate strategies as required by the standards. Basic Students who perform at the basic level use rudimentary knowledge and skills to acquire and communicate information and ideas on well-defined tasks with direction.
