Triphthongs are combinations of three vowels within a single syllable that generate a simple or complex sound. While some dictionaries list triphthongs like /eɪə/ in "layer" and /aɪə/ in "lire", most phoneticians agree that triphthongs do not truly exist in English because there is no uninterrupted transition between three vowels in a single syllable. While English has sequences of three vowel letters, the sounds are better analyzed as a diphthong followed by a monophthong or two diphthongs.

Are there triphthongs included in the system of English vowels?
Answer/ Triphthongs do not exist in the English language since there is no sequence of three vowels that plays the same syllable. Triphthongs are the most complicated vowel sounds in English. They can be difficult to say and even more difficult to recognize. A triphthong is a quick and uninterrupted transition from one vowel to another and then to a third.
