REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN
PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE

Instruction: Solve the following problem. All answer must be rounded off to two decimal places for easy checking
of answers. MAGIC IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. SHOW YOUR SOLUTION. Write your solution in a bond paper (Long 8.5
in x 13 in) neat and clean. Use only black ballpoint pen. BOX YOUR FINAL ANSWER.

Situation 1: The joist (double-tee) is to be used on a simply supported span of 8 m and is pre-tensioned with a total
initial force of 1240 kN from low-relaxation strands. The centroid of the strands is located at 220mm below the
neutral axis of the DT throughout the beam span. Loss of pre stress of service loads is 20%. Total uniformly
distributed loads on the joists are: dead load = 4.5 kPa (beam weight included), live load 3.6 kPa.

Section properties of the double-tee joist (DT) shown are as follows:

a = 2.4 m A = 2.1 x 105 mm2

yt = 103 mm I = 2.76 x 109 mm4
yb = 303 mm Concrete unit weight = 24 kN/m3
a. Compute the stress at the top fibers of the DT at the ends due to initial pre stress force.
b. Compute the stress at the bottom fibers of the DT at midspan due to initial pre stress force.
c. Compute the resulting stress at the bottom fibers of the DT at midspan due to service loads
and pre stress force.

Situation 2: Pre stressed hollow core slabs with typical section shown in the figure are used for the
flooring of a library.
Properties of the slab are as follows:

a = 1.2 m
b = 200 mm
A = 1.4 x 105 mm2
St = Sb = 6.8 x 106 mm3
mm3

The slab is prestressed with 820 kN force at an eccentricity e = 63 mm below the neutral axis of the
section.
Slab weight = 2.7 kPa
Super imposed (DL) = 2.0 kPa
Live Load = 2.9 kPa

The slab is simply supported on a span of 8m. allowable stresses at the service loads are 2.0 MPa
in tension and 15.5 MPa in compression. Consider 15% loss of pre stressed at service loads.
a. Compute the stress at the top fibers of the slab at the ends due to the initial pre stress force.
b. Determine the resulting stress at the top fibers of the slab at midspan due to the loads and
pre stress force.
c. Determine the maximum total load (kN/m) including its own weight, that the slab can be
subjected to if the allowable stress at service loads are not to be exceeded.
