CIT.1.0 University Admission Requirements
No student shall be registered for the Degree of Bachelor of Science without satisfying the
Minimum University entry requirements set by CUE.

Applicants should note that this is a MINIMUM requirement and this does not guarantee
automatic admission to the Faculty of Computing & Information Technology.

CIT.2.0 Admission to the Faculty of Computing & Information Technology


(a) The University Common Regulations shall apply

(b) In addition to (1.0) above, each student who is registered in the Faculty of Computing &
Information Technology must have attained the minimum requirement for the Faculty,
which is an average of C+ in any one of the following subject combinations taken in
KCSE (or equivalent examination):

Alternative A
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English

Alternative B
Mathematics, Physical Sciences and English

(c) Holders of KACE/GCE ("A" level) with a minimum of 2 principal passes in science
subjects
OR
(d) A Diploma in Computer science or Information technology with at least a credit pass
from an institution recognized by the Senate may be admitted to second year of study.
Those with pass with no experience may be admitted to year one of study.

(e) Subject to section 2(b) and (c) students will complete the B.Sc. degree programmes in a
minimum of four academic years and a maximum of six academic years.

(f) A students admitted directly into the second year of study may complete their courses in
a minimum of three academic years and a maximum of five academic years.

(g) Foreign students who do not meet above criteria shall have their transcripts equated by
the Commission for University Education (CUE).

CIT.3.0 Transfer
(a) The University Common Regulations shall apply.

(b) A student who have successfully completed one year of study in any institution recognized
by the University Senate may be allowed to transfer to MMU B.Sc. programmes, and shall be
considered for appropriate credits based on the years of study in the institution (s) they are
transferring from.

(c) A student who has successfully completed a whole year of study at any recognized campus
of the University, may for some good cause, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board,
and with the approval of the Senate, be allowed to transfer to another recognized campus of
the University to complete the programme for which he/she has registered, upon payment of
requisite fee.

(d) A student who has not qualified to proceed to the next year of study, may also be allowed to
transfer from one recognized campus of the University to another recognized campus, under
the same conditions as in section 3.b, but he/she shall NOT be permitted to register for the
next year of study, until he/she has passed all the outstanding special/supplementary
examinations necessary to complete the previous year of study.

(e) Any request for transfer must have been submitted at least one month before the opening date
for the next year of study at the campus from which the student wishes to transfer.

CIT.4.0 Registration for Programmes


(a) A student shall be required to register or modify their units within the first three weeks of
the teaching period of the semester.

(b) Any registration or modification of units on the fourth week window will attract a late
registration fee.

(c) No registration of students or modification of additional units shall be allowed after


expiry of the four weeks registration period of the semester.

CIT.4.1 Courses and Units
(a) Courses shall be offered in terms of units. A Unit is defined as the equivalent of 45 one-
hour lectures spread over one semester. For this purpose, a lecture is equivalent to a two-
hour tutorial or a three-hour practical period.

(b) Also one hour lecture is equivalent to other assigned study or practical 3 hour experience
or any combination of these that may be approved by the Board of the Faculty of
Computing & Information Technology.

(c) A student within the Faculty of Computing & Information Technology may choose units
from the programmes offered in the following departments in addition to University and
faculty common units:
▪ Computer Science
▪ Information Technology
Each department owns the units appearing under the departmental code.

CIT.4.2 Registration for Units

(a) In all the years of study, registration for a specific unit in any department shall be subject
to the student meeting the departmental requirements.

(b) No unit shall be offered unless there is an enrolment of at least ten (10) students.

(c) No programme shall be offered unless there is an enrolment of at least fifteen (15)
students.

(d) Units and programmes will be offered at the discretion of the Faculty.

(e) A student may be allowed to take a maximum of TWO audited units during any year of
study as ADDITIONAL UNITS in consultation with the Department(s) concerned.
However the additional unit(s) will not be counted towards the classification of the
Degree, but will appear in the transcript.

(f) In the first year of study a student shall be required to take a minimum of seventeen (17)
units which shall include the following three University Common Units;
▪ Communication skills

▪ Development studies and Social Ethics
▪ HIV/AIDS

CIT.5.0 Examinations
5.1 Moderation of Examination Papers
(a) Before administering any examinations, questions shall be moderated internally and also
by a duly recognized external examiner.

(b) All the final marked scripts by internal examiners shall be moderated by an external
examiner.

(c) The final marks to be awarded shall be endorsed by an external examiner.

5.2 Ordinary Examinations


(a) All units shall be examined during the semester in which they are taken. Such
examinations shall be named ordinary examinations.

(b) Examinations shall consist of continuous assessment and University Examinations.

(c) No candidate shall be allowed to sit for examinations without attending at least two
thirds (2/3) of the lectures, continuous assessment tests and practical’s.

(d) Continuous assessments shall normally comprise Practicals, tests and assignments.

(e) Continuous assessments shall contribute 30% and written University Examinations shall
contribute 70% of the total mark; except where a unit consists solely of practical work,
in which case it shall be assessed out of 100% by continuous assessment.
For units with Practicals, the weights will be as follows;
Practical - 10%,
C.A.T - 15%
Assignments - 5% to make a total of 30%
For Theory based courses, the weights will be as follows;
C.A.T - 20%
Assignment - 10% to make a total of 30%

(e) The University Examinations shall consist of written papers covering each unit
completed. The time allowed shall be two (2) hours per unit.

(f) Each unit shall be graded out of 100 marks and the pass mark shall be 40. The marks
shall be translated into letter grades as follows:
70% - 100% A
60% - 69% B
50% - 59 C
40% - 49% D
Below 40% F

(g) A candidate who absents himself/herself from a scheduled examination (ordinary, special or
supplementary) for any unit without a valid reason shall be deemed to have failed in the
unit, with a Score mark of zero.

(h) At the end of every academic year the Registrar’s office shall prepare for each candidate
a transcript in the form of literal grades for the units taken during that year.

(g) Industrial Attachment shall be assessed and graded as either PASS or FAIL. Assessment
shall be by visit by a University academic staff and from the logbook and report filled by
students on attachment

CIT.6.0 Progress to Next Year of Study


(a) In order to proceed to the second year of study, candidates must pass all the Seventeen
(17) required units offered in the first year with an exception as provided in 6(c) below.

(b) In order to proceed to the third year of study candidates must pass all the sixteen (16)
required units including any failed unit in first year of study (if any), with an exception
as provided in 6(d) below.
(c) A candidate may proceed to second year of study with a maximum of two (2) failed
first year supplementary units (carry Forward) whose examinations shall be done
when the unit(s) is/are next offered.

(d) A candidate may proceed to Third year of study with a maximum of two (2) failed
second year supplementary units (carry forward) whose examinations shall be done
when the unit(s) is/are next offered.

(e) However in order to proceed to the final year of study a candidate must have passed
all units taken in the preceding year of study, i.e. a candidate will not be allowed to
carry over third year units into fourth year of study.

CIT.7.0 Supplementary Examinations


(a) Any examination in a unit taken by a candidate as a result of failing the unit at the first
attempt is a supplementary examination.

(b) Sitting supplementary examinations in failed units shall be only during the
supplementary examination period or during the ordinary examination period when the
examinations for the units are next offered.

(c) A candidate may sit supplementary examinations in failed units up to a maximum of


three (3) attempts only

(d) The maximum marks in the supplementary examinations shall be 40% of the total marks
and shall not include continuous assessment marks.

(e) When a candidate sits for a supplementary examination in any failed unit, the final mark
for the unit shall be the mark awarded in the supplementary examination.

(f) A candidate can only sit for a maximum of five (5) supplementary exams failed in the
ordinary examination period.

CIT.8.0 Repeat Internally
(a) A candidate who fails to satisfy section 6 even after taking supplementary
examinations shall not be allowed to proceed to the next year of study but shall be
required to retake the examination in the unit(s) failed during the next time they are
offered at ordinary examinations.

(b) A candidate who fails a supplementary examination of the 4th year of study during the
Supplementary examination period shall not graduate but shall be required to
retake the examination during the next time the unit(s) is offered at the ordinary
examinations.

(c) A candidate who fails in more than five (5) and less than fifty percent (50%) of the
units in any year of study shall be required to retake examinations only in the failed units
during the ordinary examination period when examinations for the individual units are
offered. Such a candidate will not be allowed to retake examinations during the
supplementary period immediately following the ordinary examinations period in which
he/she failed the units.

(d) A candidate, who has registered for the failed unit(s), shall be required to attend lectures
for the unit and utilize other facilities upon payment of requisite fees. However no marks
shall be awarded for any continuous assessment taken.

CIT.9.0 Special Examinations


(a) If for some good cause a candidate is unable to sit for one or more examination papers
due to unavoidable circumstances such as bereavement or medical condition he/she
may, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Examiners, and with the approval
of the Senate, be permitted to take special examinations.

(b) Special examinations shall normally be scored out of 100% and shall include continuous
assessment test scores.

(c) A candidate who is scheduled for special examinations is not eligible to sit
examination(s) in any other failed unit(s) until she/he completes the academic year of
study in question.

CIT.10.0 Academic Leave


(a) Subject to approval by the University Senate, a newly admitted student who for some
good cause is unable to register in the first year of study, may be allowed to defer his/her
admission for one (1) or two (2) complete academic years, and to be admitted to the
first year of study at the start of the following academic year or of the academic year
immediately thereafter.

(b) Subject to approval by the University Senate, a continuing student who for some valid
reason is unable to register in any year, may be allowed to stay out of the university for
a period of one or two complete academic years, and to resume study at the start of the
following academic year or of the academic year immediately thereafter.

(c) Subject to approval by the University Senate, a registered student who for some valid
reason is unable to complete the coursework and examinations for the first semester of
any academic year, may be permitted to register for the same year of study as a
readmitted student at the start of the following academic year or of the academic year
immediately thereafter.

(d) Subject to approval by the University Senate, a registered student who has completed the
course work and sat for the examinations of the first semester, and who for some valid
reason is unable to complete the coursework for any academic year, may be allowed to
stay out of the university for a period of one or two complete academic years and may
be permitted to register during the second semester of the same year of study as a
readmitted student. The results for the first semester examinations shall stand. Such a
student shall be required to pay fees for the second semester only, unless there is an
outstanding fee balance.

(e) Subject to approval by the University Senate, a registered student, who is unable to
proceed to the next year of study with valid cause, as he/she has been unable to sit for all
the outstanding special or supplementary examinations during the supplementary
examination period, may be allowed to stay out of the university for a period of one or
two complete academic years, when he/she resumes which period he/she may sit for all
the outstanding examinations when next offered.

(f) Notwithstanding 10.b, 10.c, 10.d, 10.e above a student taking academic leave shall not be
allowed to stay out for a total period of more than four (4) academic years after
registration in the first year of study.

CIT.11.0 Discontinuation
(a) A candidate who fails in fifty percent (50%) or more of the units taken at any ordinary
examinations in any year of study shall be discontinued.

(b) A candidate who fails in more than five (5) but less than fifty percent (50%) of the
units of any year of study at the ordinary examinations and who subsequently fails the
same units after retaking the examinations shall be discontinued.

(c) A candidate under section 8(a) who has failed to satisfy section 6 after a total of four (4)
attempts at an examination in any unit shall be discontinued.

(d) A candidate under section 8(b) who has failed to satisfy section 6 after a total of four (4)
attempts at an examination in any unit shall be discontinued.

(e) Any candidate, who repeats a year of the study and still does not satisfy the conditions to
progress to the next year of study, as set out in section 6, shall be discontinued.

(f) A candidate who fails to complete the four year programme in six (6) academic years
shall be discontinued unless the delay is occasioned by a valid reason.

CIT.12.0 Appeal for Re-Assessment
(a) A candidate may appeal for re-marking for a written examination paper within four
weeks (1 month) after the release of results for the course unit(s) for which the appeal is
made upon payment of the appropriate fee, which the University Senate shall determine
from time to time.

(b) The final mark recommended by the appointed examiner(s) shall be the final mark and
grade awarded to the candidate for the unit.

CIT.13.0 Deregistration
(a) Subject to sections 10(a) and 10(b) (Academic Leave), a student who has qualified to
register for any year of study but who has failed to register by the end of the first four
(4) weeks of the semester shall be assumed to have deserted the degree course and shall
be deregistered forthwith.

(b) Subject to section 10, a student who has registered for a particular semester but who has
failed to complete at least two thirds (2/3) of the class attendance/practicals and
continuous assessments in all the units in which he/she has registered shall be
assumed to have deserted the degree course and shall be deregistered forthwith.

(c) Subject to the provisions of section 9(special examinations), a candidate who absents
himself/herself from at least six university examinations or fails to undertake all
assignments without a valid reason in any semester shall be assumed to have deserted
the degree course, and shall be deregistered forthwith.

(d) A candidate, who has been required to retake the examination(s) in any failed units (s)
under section 8(a) or 9(b) and who has failed to register for the examination(s) by the
end of the fourth (4) week of the semester in which the examination (s) is (are) held,
shall be assumed to have deserted the degree course, and shall be deregistered forthwith.

CIT.14.0 Readmission
(a) A student who has been deregistered under section 13 and who within three (3) months

of being notified of the deregistration provides a valid reason why he/she did not register
in time, or absented himself/herself from coursework and/or examinations that
he/she was due to sit, may with approval by the Senate and on payment of the re-
admission fee, which Senate may at its discretion determine from time to time, be re-
admitted, subject to taking any outstanding examinations when the units concerned are
next offered.

(b) A student who has been discontinued under sections 11(a), 11(b), or 11(c) and who
within three (3) months of being notified of the discontinuation provides a valid reason
why he/she did not perform well in the concerned examinations, may with approval by
the Senate and on payment of the re-admission fee, be re-admitted as a repeat internally
student, subject to taking all the outstanding supplementary examinations when the units
concerned are next offered. Such a student, if readmitted, shall be deemed to be a repeating
student.

(c) Notwithstanding sections 14(a) and 14(b) above, no student shall be considered for
re-admission more than once under this regulation.

CIT.15.0 Nullification
(a) A student who does not register for a particular unit but who completes course work
and sits for its examination will have the result nullified.

(d) Any student, who has been required to repeat the year of study, or who has been
discontinued, or who has been deregistered, and who promotes himself/herself illegally
to the next year of study, shall have the results of any coursework assessment or
examinations, pertaining to that year of study, nullified, and shall be subject to any action
taken against him/her by the University Disciplinary Committee.

(c) Any student, who has not presented a genuine examination card while sitting for an
examination in any unit, shall have the results of any coursework assessment or
examinations, pertaining to that unit, nullified, and shall be subject to any action taken
against him/her by the University Disciplinary Committee.

CIT.16.0 Examination Irregularities
(a) A candidate who is found guilty of any irregularities during any continuous assessment or
any university examinations (ordinary or special or supplementary) shall be subject to the
appropriate penalties as detailed in university examination regulations.
CIT.17.0 Award of Degree
(a) To be considered for Award of degree:
EITHER
(i) A candidate admitted to the first year must have taken all required Units and
must have passed them in not more than six (6) academic years unless for
medical reasons.

OR
(ii) A candidate admitted directly into second year must have taken a minimum of
forty eight (48) required units including HIV/AIDS and must have passed all
required units in not more than five (5) academic years unless for medical
reasons.

(b) A candidate who qualifies for Award of the Degree shall be placed in one of the
classes as follows:
(i) First Class Honours
(ii) Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
(iii) Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
(iv) Pass
(c) No candidate with the overall average mark of less than 40% shall be awarded the
Degree.
(d) The candidates shall be awarded the B.Sc. Degree specifying the subjects studied
as follows:
1. B.Sc. Computer Science
2. B.Sc. Software Engineering
3. B.Sc. Information Technology
4. B.Sc. Computer Technology
Any other degree that may be approved by Senate may apply.

CIT.18.0 Classification of the Degree
Either
(a) (i) Subject to the provision of section 17(a) the final classification of the Degree
shall be based on the average mark for all required sixty four (64) faculty units plus
departmental units taken over all the years of study.

OR (ii) Subject to the provision of section 17(b) the final classification of the degree
shall be based on the average mark for all the required forty eight (48) faculty units
taken over all the years of study.

OR (iii) Subject to the provision of section17(c) the final classification of the degree shall
be based on the average mark for all the required thirty two (32) faculty units taken
over all the years of study.
(b) The Degree shall be graded as follows:
(i) First Class Honours - 70% and above
(ii) Second Class Honours (Upper Division) - 60% but below 69%.
(iii) Second Class Honours (Lower Division) - 50% but below 59%.
(iv) Pass - 40% but below 49%.

CIT.19.0 Fees
Notwithstanding any of the sections l to 18 above, the registration of a student in the Faculty of
Computing & Information Technology, sitting for examinations, release of results and awarding
of the Degree shall be subject t to the student fulfilling all the University Regulations concerning
payment of fees and other monies due to the university.
