OBJECTIVES

Learners will be able to…


• identify the different types of media;
• classify contents of different media types; and
• discuss the effects of media to culture and
society.
PRINT MEDIA
• It encompasses mass communication through
printed material.
• It is used to describe the traditional or "old-
fashioned" print-based media that today's
parents grew up with.
PRINT MEDIA : Newspapers
• A major source of information for a large
number of readers.
• It may be national or local, daily or weekly
newspaper.
• It is a highly involvement media as readers
are required to devote some effort in
reading the message.
• It is available to masses at a very low cost.
PRINT MEDIA : Magazines
• A specialized advertising media that
serves educational, informational,
entertainment and other specialized
needs of consumers, businesses, and
industries
• It can be classified into local / regional /
national or weekly / monthly / quarterly
magazines.

• Are part of the
promotional
literature of a
product or an
organization.

• Huge advertisements
that are put up at
height in strategic
locations to draw more
attentions.
BROADCAST MEDIA
• The distribution of audio and video content to
a dispersed audience.
• It was first adopted by early radio engineers
from the Midwestern United States to refer to
the analogous dissemination of radio signals.
• Broadcasting to a narrow range of audience is
called narrowcasting.

Radio Broadcasting
• a one-way sound broadcasting service, transmitted
over radio waves from a transmitter to a receiving
antenna and intended to reach a wide audience.
• Types:
– AM: Amplitude Modulation
– FM: Frequency Modulation
– Pirate Radio
– Terrestrial digital radio
– Satellite
BROADCAST MEDIA:
Television Broadcasting
• The word is derived from mixed Latin and Greek
roots, meaning “farsight” : Greek tele, far, and
Latin visio, sight.
• This appeals to both the auditory and visual
senses.
FILM
• It encompasses individual motion pictures.
• Films are produced by recording images from
the world with cameras, or by creating images
using animation techniques or special effects.

• NEW MEDIA- digital media that are interactive,
incorporate two-way communication and involve some
form of computing.
• Social Media- forms of electronic communication
(such as web sites) through which people create online
communities to share information, ideas, personal
messages, etc.

• These have become a boon to mankind.
• Not only used for interaction, but also for other
technical utilities like operating pumps from remote
locations or getting alerts on monetary transactions.

• Information about everything is virtually
obtained with the help of computers.
• It has added speed and multimedia to the
information which was earlier available only in
the print format.

• The biggest invention in mass media.
• A global wide area network that connects computer systems
across the world.

data to other locations, such as web servers and ISPs.

The Internet provides different online services. Some examples
include:
• Web – a collection of billions of webpages that you can view with
a web browser. It has usefulness in providing information, search
engines, download through libraries, and interaction through
social networking sites.
• Email – the most common method of sending and receiving
messages online. It is also known as electronic mails.

• Social media – websites and apps that allow people to share
comments, photos, and videos
• Online gaming – games that allow people to play with and
against each other over the Internet
• Software updates – operating system and application updates

1. Social networks- sometimes called “relationship
networks,” help people and organizations connect
online to share information and ideas.
• Examples:
– Facebook- the best platform to meet old friends
– Twitter- a micro-blogging site which allows interaction and
feedback from other people which is very popular among
celebrities and individuals.
BLOGGING
• A space on the Internet where single person
or a group of person record their information,
opinions, photos, videos, etc. It is an
interesting and free platform to talk about any
topic.

2. Media sharing networks- To find and share photos,
video, live video, and other media online.
• Examples:
– Instagram- an online photo sharing service. It allows you to apply different
types of photo filters to your pictures with a single click, then share them with
others.
– Snapchat- a mobile app and service for sharing photos, videos, and messages
with other people. Once you view a message received via Snapchat, it is
automatically deleted.
– YouTube- a video sharing service that allows users to watch videos posted by
other users and upload videos of their own. “Broadcast yourself”
Podcasts
• Mediums of mass communication that include
short video or audio files that can be seen and
heard on mobiles, computers, and portable
media instruments.

3. Discussion forums- To find, discuss, and share news,
information, and opinions. This is the oldest form of social
media.
• Examples:
– Reddit- the self-styled “front page of the internet”
– Quora- a place for you where questions are asked, answered, and
organized by its community
– Digg- is a social network and news aggregating site. Users submit
stories for promotion, and they are subsequently either voted for
(digged) or against (buried).
E-forums
• Are bulletin boards usually hosted on websites
where people start threads on topics. These
are open platforms to discuss a range of
topics.

4. Bookmarking and content curation networks- To
discover, save, share, and discuss new and trending
content and media.
• Examples:
– Pinterest- an online scrapbook
– Flipboard- a lifestyle magazine

6. Blogging and publishing networks- give people and
brands tools to publish content online in formats that
encourage discovery, sharing, and commenting.

– WordPress, Tumblr, Medium

share information about brands, products, and
services, as well as restaurants, travel destinations, and
more.
• Examples:

follow brands, share great finds, and make
purchases.
• Examples:
– Polyvore, Etsy, Fancy

Examples:
– Goodreads (for authors and avid readers),
– Houzz (designers can browse the work of other
designers, create collections of their own work, and
connect with people looking for their services)

9. ‘Sharing economy’ networks- To advertise,
find, share, buy, sell, and trade products and
services between peers.
Examples:
– Airbnb, Uber, Taskrabbit

10. Anonymous social networks- To gossip, vent,
snoop, and sometimes bully.
Examples:
– Whisper “the place to go these days to vent, come
clean, or peer into other people’s secrets,” saying the
site focuses on “turning confessions into content.”
