A Sentence Pattern
Subject = A person or a thing that is being described or discussed in a sentence. A noun or a pronoun.
Direct object = The receiver of an action. Answers the question “what” or “whom”.
Indirect Object = A noun or a pronoun receiving the direct object. Answers the question “to whom?” and
“for whom?”
Subject Complement = it describes or provides information about the subject. It can be an adjective or a
noun.
1. S-IV
Subject + Intransitive Verb = Doesn’t have an object.
Example:
They worked. “They” is the SUBJECT and “Worked” is the INTRANSITIVE WORD.
Alvin dances gracefully. “Alvin” is the SUBJECT and “DANCES” is the “Intransitive Verb”
I memorize it well.
2. S-TV-DO
Examples:
She likes to read books. “She” is the SUBJECT, “Likes” is the TRANSITIVE VERB, and “Books”
is the DIRECT OBJECT.
Alvin punched his bag. “Alvin” is the SUBJECT, “Punched” is the TRANSITIVE VERB, and
“Bag” is the DIRECT OBJECT.
I read the mission and vision. “I” is the SUBJECT, “Read” is the TRANSITIVE VERB, and
“mission and vision” is the DIRECT OBJECT.
3. S-TV-IO-DO
Examples:
Franchezka gave me reviewers. “Franchezka” is the SUBJECT, “Gave” is the TRANSITIVE
VERB, “Me” is the INDIRECT OBJECT, and “Reviewers” is the DIRECT OBJECT.
Miss Banj gave me a photocopy of the mission and vision to encourage me to memorize it.
“Miss Banj” is the SUBJECT, “Encourage” is the TRANSITIVE VERB, “Me” is the INDIRECT
OBJECT, and “Photocopy” is the DIRECT OBJECT.

“I” is the SUBJECT, “Found” is the TRANSITIVE VERB, “OLFU’s VMO’s” is the DIRECT
OBJECT, and “Inspiring” is the OBJECT COMPLEMENT.
6. S-LV-SC
She is intelligent. “She” is the SUBJECT. “Is” is the LINKING VERB, and “Intelligent” is the
SUBJECT COMPLEMENT. (THE SUBJECT COMPLEMENT DESCRIBES THE SUBJECT SHE)
I am a college student. ”I” is the SUBJECT, “Am” is the LINKING VERB, and “Student” is the
SUBJECT COMPLEMENT.
“Miss banj” is the SUBJECT, “looks” is the LINKING VERB, and “cheerful” is the SUBJECT
COMPLEMENT.
(Sensory Verb such as LOOKS, SMELL, SEEM, APPEAR, ETC. Can be a linking verb.)
